Joppa Flats Summer Camp NATURE ADVENTURES FOR AGES 6-11 One Plum Island Turnpike Newburyport, MA DISCOVER. EXPLORE. BE OUTSIDE! SUMMER 2018

About Camp Our camp encourages children s curiosity about nature through outdoor exploration, play, and hands-on science. Camp days are filled with insect catching, wildlife tracking, and experiments about everything from flight, to weather, to metamorphosis and snail slime! Nature-based art projects, games, and cooperative challenges encourage imagination, self-expression, and campers connection to each other. Our campers go on multiple local field trips each week to explore amazing habitats first-hand. Small group sizes nurture friendships and ensure that campers stay safe and engaged. From the Camp Director s Desk Summer is always fun and full of nature discovery at Joppa Flats. With the guidance of their counselors, our campers uncover the wildlife and beauty of local habitats, such as Maudslay State Park, the Ipswich River and Atlantic Ocean, and beyond. This summer we continue our tradition of nature connection through play and outdoor exploration, thanks to dedicated staff and creative, hands-on programming within our inclusive and caring camp community. We look forward to getting your kids outdoors and into nature this summer! Warmest regards, Kirsten "Autumn" Lindquist Summer 2018 Announcements July 4th week will feature two new mini-camps instead of a full-week session. After-Camp programming has a new end time of 4:30 pm. We continue our commitment to offer financial aid to camp families by increasing our Summer Outdoors Fund. Please don t hesitate to contact us for information; we never want cost to be a barrier to a child s participation in camp.

Our Camp Staff Staff are carefully selected for their maturity, ability to work with children outdoors, passion for nature, and enthusiasm. All undergo background checks, are certified in CPR/ First Aid/AED, and receive training in child development, risk management, and natural history prior to the start of camp. Many are pursuing careers in education, ecology and conservation, and are always eager to share their knowledge. For them, camp at Joppa Flats is far more than "just a summer job." Camp counselors are at least 20 years of age, and After-Camp counselors are at least 16 years of age. Our Camp Director Kirsten Lindquist is Joppa Flats Camp Director and Youth Program Coordinator. This will be her fourth summer at camp, and she can t wait to welcome campers for another season of fun and discovery! Kirsten is certified in CPR/First Aid/AED, Wilderness First Aid, and Small Watercraft Safety. She has 10 years of environmental education experience from positions with Mass Audubon s Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary, AmeriCorps, and Great Basin Outdoor School. "Autumn," her camp nickname, comes from her love for New England s most colorful season.

Summer 2018 Camp Sessions EXPLORERS (ages 6 8) & TREKKERS (ages 9 11) Monday Friday, 8:30 am 3:00 pm After Camp (optional): 3:00 4:30 pm Trekkers and Explorers have fun with science experiments, nature inquiry, and multiple local field trips each session. Both groups gather together for free time, such as lunch and morning snack. For most science and field trip activities, Trekkers and Explorers engage in separate projects and adventures suited to their strengths and developmental stage. For example, in the "Habitat Heroes" session, Explorers enjoy a live wildlife presentation while Trekkers go on more advanced trip (mountain hike) requiring stamina. Our counselor-to-camper ratios are low typically 1:6 and ensure that each child is heard and attended to. Most field trips take place within a half-hour drive of Joppa Flats, and transportation is provided via seven-passenger vans. All driving staff are at least 20 years of age and have completed a driver s background check.
