Orientation Fall Semester 2018

Tuesday 28 th August 7:00am-5:00pm 8:00am-2:00pm AIFS Program Check-In at Atlantic House, Kensington Campus AIFS students arrive on the Kensington Campus on Tuesday 28 th August. All students should report to the Upper Dining Hall at Atlantic House to check-in and then will proceed to your room in your Residence Hall. Brunch (included in your AIFS meal plan) Brunch on arrival day and all breakfasts and dinners in the dining hall from Tuesday 28 th August Friday 31 st August are included in your meal plan as an AIFS student. Outside of Orientation Week the dining hall operates for breakfast, lunch and dinner during the week, brunch on Saturdays and brunch and dinner on Sundays. AIFS students are entitled to breakfast and dinner, Monday through Friday as part of your meal plan agreed by AIFS, unless you have opted to upgrade to the full meal plan, in which case you will get all meals. If you wish to eat at the other meal times of lunch or weekends you may pay cash or card on these days. Atlantic House: Upper Dining Hall Atlantic House: Dining Hall You will be a few blocks away from the Kensington commercial area, Kensington High Street, where there is every shop imaginable, including; Whole Foods, McDonalds, Nandos and Starbucks. Lots of very pleasant local shops and eateries can also be found in close proximity to us and Sandwich World on Gloucester Road sells very cheap sandwiches and snacks! 9:00am-5:00pm IT Introduction & Wireless Support One of Kensington s IT Support Analysts will talk to you about how you can get connected to the Internet and how you can use the University s Email and other IT facilities. Wireless support during Orientation week will be available Tuesday Friday at various times in the Atlantic House Library please see each specific date for timing details. 2:00pm Walking Tour of Kensington Meet in front of Atlantic House at 1:55pm to be taken on a great tour of the exclusive and historical area by highly qualified and experienced Blue Badge Guides. You will also take in other parts of the Kensington campus. 5:00pm-7:00pm Dinner (included in your AIFS meal plan) Atlantic House: Dining Hall 7:00pm-7:30pm Residence Hall Meetings Various Locations Around Campus

This meeting is to run through the rules, regulations and safety in your residences; it is mandatory that you attend. Your meeting location depends on your assigned residence hall. If you live in Atlantic House you will meet with your Resident Advisors in the Atlantic House Common Room. If you live in Ambassador House, you will meet with your Resident Advisors in the Ambassador House Common Room. Walking Tour of Kensington Repeat of Tuesday s Tour Meet in front of Atlantic House at 8:55am to be taken on a great tour of the exclusive and historical area by highly qualified and experienced guides. You will also take in other parts of the Kensington campus. Orientation Welcome Meeting - MANDATORY THIS IS A MUST! You will be dropped off at Heythrop College for this session at the end of the Sightseeing Tour. If you are not on the sightseeing tour, you should meet your Student Affairs staff on the Atlantic House steps at 9:45am sharp to walk with them to Heythrop College. Asa Briggs Hall: Room 104 Heythrop College: Loyola Hall 1:30pm-4:30pm This session is the official welcome to AIFS s program at Richmond University. The meeting will cover many aspects of student life in London, including social, cultural, personal safety, health and travel, essential academic and social information. It will be led by your AIFS London Resident Director, Anderson Hillen, and the Dean of International Programs, Dr. Dominic Alessio. You will be introduced to members of the AIFS Team, the Richmond Student Affairs team, the Kensington Residence Life team, and the Kensington Orientation Leaders. Sightseeing Tour Of London With Professional Blue Badge Guides! Take in the sights of the city with a qualified tour guide from the comfort of a luxury bus! Assemble again in front of Atlantic House and the Residence life staff will walk you 5 minutes to the coach pick up point on Gloucester Road. You coach tour of London will be led by knowledgeable certified Blue Badge guides (Staff will walk the group to the coach pickup point on Gloucester Road!)

Library Orientations These 45-minute sessions will take place throughout the morning and afternoon. They will offer a brief introduction to what is available in the Library, and more importantly, allow library staff to create a Library account for you. These are mandatory sessions Make sure you attend. (This is not a drop in sessionyou have an allocated individual slot. Check your welcome pack or Atlantic House notice board for your assigned session!) The quiz will take place in a local pub, Hoop and Toy in South Kensington. Meet on the front steps of Atlantic House at 7:30pm and your Residence Life team will lead you there! Quiz starts at 8pm

Saturday, 1 st September 12:00pm AIFS Flight on the London Eye FREE FOR ALL AIFS STUDENTS! Take a trip in a glass pod on board The London Eye, a gradually rotating observation wheel 135 meters up in the sky. On a clear day you will have a 40 kilometre panoramic view of London, taking in its famous landmarks such as Big Ben and St Paul s Cathedral. Your flight takes 30 minutes. You will gather outside of Atlantic House at a time to be confirmed to travel to the London Eye as a group. Please note that students are responsible for paying for their own transportation for this event. ALL AIFS STUDENTS RECEIVE A FREE FLIGHT ON THE LONDON EYE! Meet outside of Atlantic House at 12.00pm to travel together on public transportation Tower Hill to meet your guide. Please note that students are responsible for paying for their own transportation for this event. After London Eye or 1:30pm from Atlantic House River Cruise down the Thames Take in London from one of its most famous landmarks, the Thames! Starting near the London eye we will cruise down the Thames during sunset, taking in all the sights, including the world famous tower bridge. The boat will also have a bar on board where you can purchase drinks and snacks too, along with a DJ and dance floor, it s sure to be a good party! (Optional Excursion: Sign up for this trip online) Meet outside Atlantic House at 1:30pm Or meet after London Eye *Students must be 18 years or older. Please bring ID, Cash only on the boat for drinks, no food is served on the boat so please bring snacks.

Sunday, 2 nd September 12:30pm Harry Potter Walking Tour Discover all of the most famous filming locations from Harry Potter & more on this magical evening walking tour in London. Learn about London s rich muggle and wizarding history, amazing facts about the books and the films and see many of the Harry Potter locations used in London, including the Ministry of Magic and the entrance to the Leaky Cauldron. (Optional Excursion: Sign up for this trip online) Meet outside of Atlantic House at 12:30pm to travel together on public transportation to London Kings Cross Station to meet your guide. Please note that students are responsible for paying for their own transportation for this event. Monday, 3 rd September ALL DAY FIRST DAY OF CLASSES It has been nearly been a full week since you first arrived in London! Now it s time to get your thinking caps back on and start enjoying the first day of your classes! Thursday & Sunday, 6 th and 9 th September Day / Thursday 6 th September 6.30pm AIFS THEATRE OUTING FREE for all AIFS Students! What better way to have your first experience of the London Theatre than by going to see one of the longest running shows this city has ever seen, the world famous Wicked! This musical portrays the story of the Wicked witch from The Wizard of Oz and is set in the beautiful Apollo Victoria Theatre. ALL AIFS STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE FREE TICKETS TO THIS PERFORMANCE! Your tickets will be distributed to you in advance. (Travel to the theatre as a group with your Residence Life Staff & Orientation Leaders) Sunday 9 th September 8:30am You will gather as a group outside of Atlantic House to travel to the theatre with staff performance begins 7.30pm - please be aware that you will need a travel card and that you are responsible for paying for your transportation fees to and from the theatre! AIFS Day Trip to Brighton FREE FOR ALL AIFS STUDENTS! Join us on a day trip to Britain's first seaside resort- Brighton! A playground for England's elite in the 18th century and party goers of today. You will visit the Prince Regent's opulent Royal Pavilion with its minarets and Chinese dragons. After our visit to the Palace, enjoy the Funfair Festival Pier, explore the Promenade and Brighton s narrow twisting lanes, or treat yourself to a real seaside fish and chips! You will depart from campus at approximately 8:30am, and return at approximately 7:00pm. Further details regarding the Day Trip to Brighton will be given during the week before the trip! Please note that this schedule is subject to changes, adjustments, and additions. Make sure to check your Richmond emails & the bulletin boards around Atlantic House regularly. Also, do check in periodically at the Student Affairs Office in Atlantic House, even if it s to say hello and meet the staff here to support you this semester!
