Our lake is worth it! 2013 Meeting Action Items (Update) - Two LTCA members volunteered to fix the Blanchard s Landing floating dock which was sinking on the north west corner. Scott Ross and Brian Baker were successful in jacking up the sunken corner of the dock and added two concrete blocks to support the corner. The condition of the floating dock will continue to be monitored by the Lake Talon Conservation Association. - The president of the LTCA is to write letters to the appropriate municipal, federal, and provincial bodies to get a clearer explanation of the intent of the Algonquin land claim on Talon Lake. - Land Claim committee to be formed and meet to develop a strategy and to get involved ASAP. - Summer students are to distribute the newsletter to all existing and prospective members, as well as collect any dues that are still to be paid to the association. - Barry Pond will contact Reeve Randy McLaren to get Bonfield Township s strategy and approach to the land claim for parcel 293. A meeting will hopefully be set to discuss these matters. Currently Bonfield is experiencing a strike and may delay this meeting. 911 Dock Identification Tags George McClellan is arranging the last round of the 911 Dock Identification Tags for those who have not yet ordered them. This will be final opportunity to purchase these through the Lake Association. Please visit our website for the order form that can be filled out and returned to George McClellan or Nancy Humphries. March 18, 2014. Dear Members, Spring has not yet arrived and I'm sure most of our seasonal members are waiting somewhat impatiently for the snow to melt and warmer temperatures to appear. Opening up the cottage is a ritual that has been passed from generation to generation. For those of you who live full time on the lake, you get to experience the splendour and solitude of Lake Talon year round. Lake Talon, the best kept secret in Ontario. PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Once again the Algonquin Land Claim (ALC) should be an important topic for discussion at this year's Annual General Meeting (AGM). As a concerned landowner, I recently received a form letter from the Policy Division of the MNR indicating that changes have been made to some of the parcels outlined in the Agreement as a result of public consultations. Notice has been given that Parts 14, 15 and 17 of Parcel 293 on the south shore of Lake Talon were created and excluded from the parcel. I have enclosed the letter and Sheets 1-3 of the Algonquin Land Claim Descriptive Plan for your reference. The letter also indicates that further consultation will be undertaken, however no timetable was given. This is good news as it gives us time to implement an action plan. The issue is further complicated by the labour dispute between Bonfield Township and their employees. Further to your directive from last year's annual general meeting, attempts to set up a meeting between town council and the LTCA committee members to discuss the Township's involvement in the ALC have not been fruitful. Until the strike is settled, I wouldn't hold out much hope of such a meeting coming to fruition. In the meantime, I would urge each of you to communicate to council your strong opposition to the removal of park land (Parcel 293) as part of the Agreement in Principal with the Algonquin Nation. Please send your written opposition to the Township of Bonfield, including your location, and your interest in the area impacted, and ask the following questions: 1. How did the Township identify and approve Parcel 293 to be part of the land claim? 2. How does Parcel 293 fit within the Township's Official Plan and Zoning Bylaws? 3. What will be the intended use of, and population density of the parcel? 4. What consideration was given to rights of access, impacts on existing private and public infrastructure? 5. What environmental impact studies have been planned? Together, we can achieve great things. Let's all work together to make sure our voice is heard. I am looking forward to seeing all of you at our annual meeting on August 3, 2014. In the meantime, have a safe and enjoyable summer. Mike Wilson President
There are several parcels of land within the Mattawa Provincial Park that will be ceded to the Algonquin First Nation. They are identified in the AIP as Parcels 83F1 and 83F2 located on the south shore of Trout Lake/Mattawa River in East Ferris Twp.; Parcel 83F3 (Camp Island) on Trout Lake in the City of North Bay; and Parcel 293 located on the south shore of Lake Talon, Bonfield Twp. (extending approx. from the Whaley family property to a point due south of Grasswells Point).
What can you do? You can be a big part of this campaign by writing to your local, provincial and federal government representatives and expressing your opposition to development in a Heritage Park. Now is the time for action! Once the AIP is signed in its present form, there will be no going back. We need a minimum of 100 letters (posted by mail) to be sent to each government agency expressing your strong opposition to any development in the Mattawa Provincial Park in order to influence dialogue and change. Templates of sample letters can be found on the LTCA website at www.laketalonca.com. Please use these as you see fit. Your support is appreciated!
