YMCA Camp 2016 Queen Elizabeth A tradition of Caring, Growing and Belonging since 1953

General Camp Information Located on the rocky shores of Beausoleil Island in Georgian Bay Islands National Park, YMCA Camp Queen Elizabeth continues to be a leader in providing quality camping experiences for youth in a positive, supportive environment. Central to our program philosophy is the belief that living in a group in an outdoor community creates an environment that allows youth to develop the four core values: Respect, Responsibility, Caring and Honesty. Through a wide range of activities we encourage campers to challenge themselves and develop friendships that will last a lifetime. A Place of Caring, Belonging and Responsibility At YMCA Camp Queen Elizabeth, we create a welcoming environment where every camper can belong. This starts with the cabin group, which most of our program revolves around. Within the cabin, campers develop close friendships and learn to live and share as a group. A Safe Place for Your Child Our full-time management team select camp staff for their skills, leadership abilities and commitment to children s growth and development. Our staff are dedicated to making sure that all campers are both physically and emotionally safe during their stay at CQE. All of our staff are trained in First Aid and CPR and receive ongoing training through the YMCA s Healthy Child Development program. All of our counsellors and program staff are certified lifeguards and our extended trip leaders have Wilderness First Aid training. We are also fortunate to have a volunteer physician or nurse join us each week and provide support and healthcare expertise to our camp population. A Healthy Environment YMCA Camp Queen Elizabeth offers an active outdoor program that promotes a healthy lifestyle. Our food services team delivers a delicious menu full of homemade meals that meet campers dietary needs. Our staff role model healthy living to ensure that campers take good care of themselves while they are away from home and promote a respect for the natural environment through conservation and education. FINANCIAL ACCESSIBILITY AND ASSISTANCE Every child deserves to go to camp, regardless of economic circumstance. Through the YMCA Strong Kids program, CQE provides assisted spaces for children who would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend camp. Please contact the Camp Director directly for more details or to make a donation to this important fund.

Summer Camps TRADITIONAL SUMMER CAMPS 2 Weeks - Sessions A, B, C 10 Nights - Session D 1 Week - Horizons From swimming and sailing to crafts and camping, our traditional camps are the perfect blend of group development and individual choice. The focus of CQE s program is the cabin group, where campers learn to live, share and play in a small group setting. Campers spend their mornings participating in activities of their choice, while afternoons and evenings are spent with the cabin in fun, age-appropriate activities. Stay for two weeks or ten nights and campers get to experience a camping trip to a local wilderness area with their cabin. Visit our website for more details. LITTLE DIPPERS Our Little Dippers camp is specially designed for campers ages 6 8. Only 5 days long, this is the perfect introduction to summer camp! Each day, campers will participate in fun and creative cabin programs that allow them to try a little bit of everything from canoeing to campfires. After dinner, campers can choose to participate in boating, arts and crafts, or cabin time, before settling into their bedtime routine. Visit our website for more details. LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS Leadership: Temagami Our two week Leadership: Temagami trip is exclusively for 14 and 15 year olds, and focuses on developing the skills, attitudes, and behaviours needed to be an effective leader both on trip and in the community. This program is aimed at 14 year olds who are looking for a leadership experience prior to the Delaware program, or as an alternative to the Delaware program for 15 year olds who want an intensive two week tripping experience. Prerequisite: 14 years old by December 31, 2016; Bronze Star or Bronze Medallion recommended. Leadership: Introduction to Whitewater Paddling This two-week leadership program focuses on grasping the basics of moving water paddling. Participants will learn river theory and become familiar with whitewater paddling techniques, and will venture to a classic Ontario river for a multi-day whitewater canoe trip. This program is suited for adventurous young people who want to develop their leadership skills and technical paddling ability. Prerequisite: 14 years old by December 31, 2016; Bronze Star or Bronze Medallion recommended. VOYAGEUR TRIPS Our voyageur trips are extended canoe trips to some of the beautiful wilderness locations in Ontario. Campers spend the first night at CQE, packing and preparing for their trip. The next morning they begin their one or two-week trip into the backcountry. Our ten night and two week trips go to Algonquin Provincial Park and Killarney Provincial Park respectively. The trips focus on developing camper s wilderness skills and appreciation for nature. Our one-week trips are a great introduction to wilderness camping for less experienced paddlers. Visit our website for more details.

(Summer Camps cont d) Leadership 1: The Delaware Program The Delaware program is the first step in our month long Leadership training programs at CQE. The focus of the program is on the development of outdoors and camper skills in a close-knit group environment. The program consists of a two week outtrip in the Temagami region and two weeks at CQE developing leadership skills. Prerequisite for Leadership 1 program: 15 years old by December 31, 2016; Bronze Medallion recommended. Leadership 2 Option 1: LIT (Leader-In-Training) Program The LIT program is for youth interested in furthering their leadership skills through hands-on training working with children. The program offers a mix of training and soft-skill development as well as opportunities to take on a leadership role within the camp environment. Participants spend two weeks in a cabin placement and two weeks in program-focused placement to develop instructional skills for camp activities. Option 2: Venture LIT Program The Venture LIT program is an alternate second step in CQE s leadership program. At the core of this four week program is an extended canoe trip on the Missinaibi River or Wabakimi Provincial Park. This program offers participants a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to develop their leadership skills in a unique and challenging environment. Participants in this program must be competent swimmers, as there is a whitewater component on this trip. There will be a whitewater training clinic offered for all participants June 3-5, 2016. Prerequisite for Leadership 2 programs: 16 years old by December 31, 2016 and completion of the Delaware program and/or similar leadership experience; Bronze Cross recommended. High School Credit Program YMCA Camp Queen Elizabeth is thrilled to partner with the YMCA Academy www.ymcaacademy.org to offer an accredited Ontario high school credit within our Delaware, LIT, and Venture LIT programs. The majority of the credit requirements will be completed by everyone in the Delaware, LIT, and Venture LIT programs, but will only be graded for credit participants. Participants in the high school credit program must also be registered in either our Leadership 1: Delaware Program or one of our Leadership 2 programs. This is not a stand alone program. Course outlines can be found on our website, and Strong Kids Financial Assistance is available to families who qualify. For more information, contact the Camp Director Nancy Knyf at nknyf@ymcawo.ca.
