32-20/2008-NDM-I Ministry of Home Affairs (Disaster Management Division) SITREP NO-131/2008 1700 hours Dated, 9 th October, 2008 Subject: SOUTHWEST MONSOON-2008: DAILY FLOOD SITUATION REPORT SUMMARY OF IMPORTANT EVENTS AS ON 09.10.2008 RAINFALL SITUATION IN THE COUNTRY ORISSA No significant rainfall has been reported in the State. o About 61.88 lakh people in 19 districts (6536 villages) have been affected. o No human death has been reported by the State during last 24 hours. o 206691 houses have also been damaged so far. o Crops over an area of 5.978 lakh have also been damaged so far. o 108850 cattle have also been accommodated in the cattle camps. BIHAR No Significant rainfall has been reported in the State. About 48.42 lakh people in 18 districts (2528 villages) have been affected. 3,87,189 houses are reported to have been damaged due to flood so far. Crops over an area of 3.40 lakh have been damaged so far. 54230 animals have been accommodated in 189 cattle camps. 409 Health Centre have also been opened in the flood affected areas. UTTAR PRADESH No significant rainfall has been reported in the State. About 41.17 lakh people in 25 districts (6,171 villages) have been affected due to flood. About 4,01,760 houses have been damaged so far. Crops over an area of 4.98 lakh have been damaged so far. 24092 animals given treatment and 110794 animals vaccinated. Human deaths No human death has been reported by any States/UTs during last 24 hours. The cumulative death toll reported so far by the States/UTs still remains to 2739. INDIAN METEOROLOGICAL DEPARTMENT Scattered rainfall activity over West Bengal, Sikkim, north Orissa, northeastern states and parts of south peninsula during next 1-2 days. Under the influence of western disturbance as an upper air system lying over Pakistan and adjoining Jammu & Kashmir, isolated to scattered precipitation is likely over western Himalayan region during next 24 hours. CENTRAL WATER COMMISSION There are 02 moderate and 04 low flood situation sites. 1

INDIAN METEOROLOGICAL DEPARTMENT Chief features Scattered rainfall activity over West Bengal, Sikkim, north Orissa, northeastern states and parts of south peninsula during next 1-2 days. Under the influence of western disturbance as an upper air system lying over Pakistan and adjoining Jammu & Kashmir, isolated to scattered precipitation is likely over western Himalayan region during next 24 hours. Subsequently with the eastward movement of western disturbance, temperatures particularly night are likely to exhibit a decreasing trend over northwest and adjoining central India. Outlook for next two days Increase in rainfall activity is likely over extreme south peninsula. Further withdrawal of southwest monsoon is likely from some more parts of northwest and adjoining east and central India. CENTRAL WATER COMMISSION According to the Central Water Commission (CWC) report dated 9 th October, 2008, there are 02 moderate and 04 low flood situation sites (as per position at 0800 hrs). The details of moderate flood sites are as under:- Assam River Brahamputra at Dibrugarh is flowing at 104.43m against the danger level of 104.24m with a steady trend. River Dhansiri(S) at Numaligarh is flowing at 77.59m against the danger level of 77.42m with a falling trend. DETAIL SITUATION REPORT ORISSA No significant rainfall has been reported in the State during last 24 hours. o About 61.88 lakh people in 19 districts and 6536 villages have been affected due to flood so far. o No human death has been reported by the State during last 24 hours. o 206691 houses have also been damaged so far. o Crops over an area of 5.978 lakh have also been damaged so far. o 4,35,391 people were evacuated from the affected areas. o 2174 boats and 430 medical teams continue to be deployed. o 108850 cattle have also been accommodated in the cattle camps. BIHAR No Significant rainfall has been reported in the State during last 24 hours. In all, about 48.42 lakh people in 18 districts and 2528 villages have been affected due to flood so far. 877 cattle livestock have perished so far. 3,87,189 houses are reported to have been damaged due to flood so far. Crops over an area of 3.40 lakh have been damaged so far. 1032690 persons were evacuated from the affected areas. 1975 hand pumps installed in the affected areas. 3678 boats and 177 medical teams continue to be deployed. 409 Health Centre have also been opened in the flood affected areas. Latest update on breach in afflux bund of Kosi Barrage Discharge of Kosi River at 8.00 AM on 07.10.2008 at Barahchetra has been reported as 47,150 cusecs, out of which 5,757 cusecs is passing through Kosi Barrage. 2

UTTAR PRADESH No significant rainfall has been reported in the State during last 24 hours. About 41.17 lakh people in 25 districts and 6,171 villages have been affected due to flood. About 4,01,760 houses have been damaged so far. About 1,72,940 people were evacuated from the affected areas. 1787 cattle/livestock are reported to have perished. Crops over an area of 4.98 lakh have been damaged so far. 24092 animals given treatment and 110794 animals vaccinated. WEST BENGAL Light rainfall has been reported in some parts of the State during last 24 hours. About 40.36 lakh people, in all, have been affected due to flood so far. Crops over an area of 125244 ha have been damaged. 3924 cattle livestock have perished so far. 439982 houses have been damaged due to flood so far. ASSAM Light rainfall has been reported in some parts of the State during last 24 hours. About 20.00 lakh people have been affected in 21 districts and in 1524 villages in the State due to flood so far. 33,704 People were evacuated from the affected areas. DEPLOYMENT OF NATIONAL DISASTER RESPONSE FORCE (NDRF) o Deployment since 15 th September, 2008 not received LOGISTIC SUPPORT PROVIDED BY THE MINISTRY OF DEFENCE ON 9 th OCTOBER, 2008 Army In Bihar, 05 Army columns and ETFs continue to be deployed for rescue and relief operations in flood affected areas.
