Intermodal transport means transport of cargo in units, combining at least two different modes of transport in the transport chain, in which railways, inland waterways and ocean ships are used for the major length of the route, and in which the starting and ending road s sections of the route are as short as possible. (Cathy Macharis) THE MESSAGE OF THE MEETING WE BUILD FUTURE THROUGH COMMON BENEFITS LET S MAKE NATURE SMILE AGAIN Recent opening of negotiations regarding Croatia s membership and association of neighbouring countries to the European Union has markedly changed the views on the role and significance of Danube- Adriatic transport region. Future expansion of the EU to this region requires adjustment and co-ordination of transport systems. In terms of transport, the Danube-Adriatic region is inadequately linked with Trans- European Transport Network (TEN-T). By promoting the co-operation of all transport sectors, this region has to be prepared for joining TEN-T, using all existing capacity of Croatian ports in the process, which may establish them as the Adriatic Gate of Europe. This can only be achieved by viewing the entire transport economy through intermodal transport system (sea-railway-road-inland waterway) as well as using, adjusting and improving the already existing ports capacity, free zones and terminals. With the improvement of the intermodal transport in the Danube-Adriatic region, freight transport will become attractive and new production possibilities will be created, it will also bring it in harmony with the needs of environment preservation and protection, thus the life quality will enhance. These goals can be achieved through co-ordinated development of transport policy. The aim of the meeting is to analyse state and possibilities of development EU policy and intermodal transport in the Southeast Europe from the point of view of intermodal transport, equipment and financing. The meeting is designed for state authorities, local government and self-government bodies; subjects of intermodal transport; scientific, professional and project organisations; producers of intermodal transport means and equipment and banking and financial institutions. INTERMODAL DANUBE-ADRIATIC NETWORK Trans-European transport network (TEN-T)
