QUEENSLAND ULTRALIGHT ASSOCIATION DECEMBER 2008 NEWSLETTER Watts Bridge Memorial Airfield, Silverleaves Road via Toogoolawah, Qld Sponsored by : ACOUSTIC TECHNOLOGIES EXCELLENCE IN PROFESSIONAL AUDIO (07) 33764122 WWW.atprofessional.com.au Greetings to one and all May we have a Happy Christmas and a Wonderful New Year Thank you for your continued support through 2008 Come and join us QUA CHRISTMAS PARTY MONDAY 1st DECEMBER AT THE SAAA CLUBHOUSE AT ARCHERFIELD FROM 06.30 PM WITH A BBQ AND SALAD. ALL QUA MEMBERS AND OUR FRIENDS ARE WELCOME.

NIEUPORTS AT WATTS BRIDGE New QUA members, Bruce Clark and John Innes will soon be gracing the skies over Watts Bridge in their Nieuport biplanes. Bruce and Mary s two seat Nieuport 12, recently seen at the Festival of Flight weekend in a rather naked state, is currently being covered and painted in preparation for its first flight in 2009. John s latest acquisition, a Nieuport 11 (left) is being refurbished to make it a safer and stronger aircraft with a new paint scheme too. A reduction drive is being fitted to the VW engine to allow for a larger propeller to be swung. The race is on to determine which Nieuport will be airworthy first. Both these aircraft were built from Graham Lee plans in aluminium alloy and tubing with very good workmanship evident by their builders. John is also waiting for delivery of a full size Fokker E111 monoplane kit from Robert Baslee of Airdrome Aeroplanes in the USA. Even though Baslee has been producing three quarter size Fokker Eindecker kits for some time, John s full size Eindecker kit is the first to be delivered. Airdrome Aeroplanes is known for producing a growing range of early style and WW1 replica kits sold world wide. Recently four full size Nieuport 17 kits were produced in a record fifty two days to be used in the recent WW1 movie Flyboys that was filmed in England. For the new movie Amelia depicting Amelia Earhart s life, a Bleriot X1 and a Morane-Saulnier Model L Parasol replicas were shipped to Canada for use in the early stages of the film. More information of these replica aircraft is found on www.airdromeairplanes.com and www.nieuports.com, including the pricing of the various kits and plans that are available for these many and varied designs. Fokker E111 Eindecker, Morane-Saulnier Model L and Nieuport N17 replicas above. On the right is Bruce and Mary Clark s Nieuport 12 as seen uncovered at the recent Festival of Flight. Whilst it seems a shame to hide all of Bruce s workmanship of the airframe, covering is continuing prior to applying the paint scheme. This aircraft will be impressive when completed due to its size and unique design when flying in our local area. For the upcoming QUA meeting at Watts Bridge on March 1 st 2009 John Innes has agreed to tell us about the building and flying of the Nieuport and Fokker replicas. There is also an invitation by John to inspect the aircraft and his hangar at Watts Bridge after the meeting.

BUILDERS CORNER With the recent completion of Glenda s Toucan, Richard and Glenda are moving ahead with their Waiex project. On the left and below is the rear fuselage being assembled with clecos prior to being riveted. Richard finds having all the pieces cut out and pre-drilled certainly speeds up assembly but there are no extra pieces provided if a mistake is made. Below are the ruddevators or tail components being assembled. This year has seen several other all metal projects being assembled from very complete kits including the Zenair 601 and 701, and Jim s similar Savannah VG aircraft, also recently completed. At the bottom is Bill and Sandy fitting a replacement engine to the Starduster and Ian and Peter pondering. Sandy and Bill hard at work Ian and Peter looking at their 601 Photos provided in this newsletter by Robert Baslee, Richard Faint, Rod Mill and your Editor.
