Trieste Your Free Port in the Heart of Europe

Port of Trieste 2

Port of Trieste 3 An international hub for trade with Central and Eastern Europe

Port of Trieste 4 Located at the heart of Europe, the Port of Trieste is the only Italian port with an international outlook, thanks to daily rail links to all of the major European destinations. Trieste is the 11th European port and the leading Italian port for total cargo handling, as well as the main oil terminal in the Mediterranean. But first and foremost, Trieste is the first Italian port for rail traffic, which grew by 45% in 2015-17. A naturally deep sea floor up to 18 meters accommodating the latest generation of container ships combined with excellent, high-frequency intermodal connections to manufacturing and industrial hubs across Europe make Trieste a strategic hub for the Belt and Road Initiative, an ideal access point for trade to and from the Far East and throughout the Mediterranean, Moreover, its special status as a free port, a unique feature at the international level, offers numerous advantages such as major customs and tax incentives. As for the New Silk Road, the president of the Port of Trieste, Mr D Agostino, believes that Italy, and the Port of Trieste, form a natural fit. The Belt and Road Initiative is not merely a new Silk Road, it is something more. An Italian approach to the Silk Road is necessary, I believe we are a highly entrepreneurial people, he remarks. We are strengthening the offer that we can bring to China through our unique advantages, not just in our facilities, but in the technological and scientific areas surrounding us. We also offer key localized know-how, and cultural heritage with an international context. Such propositions are not made alone, however. The Port of Trieste s strategic collaboration agreement with the Port of Duisburg in inland Germany (crossroads between the maritime and continental Silk Road) secures excellent rail links, which themselves enable even more goods to reach China via both land and sea. Zeno D'Agostino President, Port of Trieste

Port of Trieste 11 Direct connections by rail to all Europe The Port of Trieste is the only Italian port to have direct international connections. More than 200 trains a week link Trieste to the manufacturing and industrial areas of Northeastern Italy and Central Europe. Different destinations in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Belgium and Luxembourg serve a developing and highly organised economic hinterland. The Port of Trieste has an internal rail network (70 kilometres of tracks) connecting the national and international network. All docks are served by rail with the possibility of shunting and/or assembling freight trains directly in the various terminals. A direct junction and a flyover within the Port area grant easy access to the international motorway and national road networks.
