Honeymoon Favourites Kumano Kodo (Recommended 3 nights) The Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trails are a series of trails that criss-cross the Kii Peninsula, the largest peninsula in Japan. This is a World Heritage Site since 2007. The routes were first developed over 1,000 years ago for pilgrims to make their way between the sacred sites in the area. In modern Japan, most of the trails have disappeared, but a few remain along the coast and in the mountains. Kawayu Onsen, a small riverside hot springs town is definitely worth an overnight stop while in this region. HONEYMOON FAVOURITES Tsumago & Magome (Recommended 2 nights) In ancient times two roads connected Kyoto to Tokyo, one being the Nakasendo. Over time, and with modern development, a lot of the original Nakasendo has been lost. Portions of the Nakasendo remain intact, the most notable of which is between Tsumago and Magome. Visiting these towns and the trail between them will take you to a world miles apart from modern Japan. An 8km hike through the mountain trail, from Tsumago to Magome, is well worth the effort. At a leisurely pace, the trek should only take 2 to 3 hours. Overnight in a traditional hotel (ryokan) is essential here, taking advantage of the soothing onsen hot spring baths. Naoshima, Shikoku Island (Recommended 1 night or day trip from Takamatsu) Naoshima Island, a short boat ride from Takamatsu, will appeal to those who enjoy modern art, architecture & alternative design. The wonderful aesthetic of the island was created from a desire to produce a new kind of space and experience by juztaposing contemporary art and architecure with the beautiful backdrop of Naoshima s natural ecology. Iya Valley, Shikoku Island (Recommended 2 nights) Shikoku Island, the smallest of the four main islands in Japan, enjoys less populated towns and villages and is an excellent place to experience unique cultural traditions, while meeting friendly locals and traveling along stunning scenic routes. A true highlight while in Shikoku is an overnight (or two) stay at Iya Valley. This magnificent remote setting is centered along the 10km Iya River, also known as one of the three largest mountain ranges in Japan. A boat ride along the river valley, crossing the Vine Bridge, and stopping off in the traditional town of Kotohira, home to the oldest Kabuki Theatre in Japan, are just some of the highlights to expect on this island. www. uniquejapantours.com
