A few days ago, I was walking through Balboa Park and was mentioning the stuffy humidity on a warm day and I heard someone say earthquake weather. I immediately shuddered at the thought of a major earthquake occurring and the anger at someone who would even mention earthquake (as if he had jinxed us and that the cosmos would now snap into action at this verbal faux pas.) While we may be conditioned to fear the worst, we must all transcend fear into action. With the 29th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake fast approaching, let s take time this month to empower ourselves. 1) To enhance district knowledge, go to sfpdinglesidestation.com and signup for the station newsletter. 2) To enhance incident awareness, register for AlertSF notifications by texting your zip code to 888777. 3) To enhance capacity by gathering supplies and making a plan, go to: www.sf72.org. 4) To enhance community: a. 2 Page 2 Ofc. Eleonardo Zandanel was born in Pieve di Cadore Italy to an Italian father and a Brazilian mother, so he grew up speaking Italian and Portuguese. He migrated to the United States at age 10 and learned English, Spanish, and French along the way. After graduating from Northeastern University with a double major in International Affairs and Economics he then worked at the United Nations during 2 general assemblies in 2011 and 2014. Already an established world traveler, he then went on a motorcycle ride of a lifetime: from Boston to Brazil. There, he found a job at a non-profit. While visiting a friend in San Francisco, he noticed an ad on a Muni bus to join the SFPD and the rest is history. During a recent stop at a block party in Bernal Heights, Ofc. Zandanel jumped into a soccer pickup game with kids and showed off a Ronaldo-esque back-heel kick (see pictures above). Ofc. Zandanel has been with the SFPD for three years and enjoys Ingleside Station for the officers who deeply care about the community and the rich diversity of Ingleside s neighborhoods. He is currently assigned as a foot-beat officer and is doing an apprenticeship with the School Resource Officers (SRO s), where he is learning the dynamics of working with the parents, schools, and children in the Ingleside s 47 schools.
3 Page 3 Ernest Jones was born at St Luke s Hospital in the Ingleside District in 1985. EJ s home was at Arch and Holloway Street in the neighboring Taraval District. EJ s mother worked as an educator for the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) for 45 years; his father worked for SF MUNI as an Inspector. EJ attended St. Emydius Grammar School and later attended St Ignatius High School. EJ attended Dominican University for his undergraduate studies and received a Masters in Public Administration from the University of San Francisco. EJ s professional career in Public Administration began with the SFUSD where he assisted families and students with their needs and education. EJ wanted to further his public service and have more tangible impact on families, so he began working at the Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center and with residents of the Alemany housing complex. There, he affected positive community engagement by starting the City Eats Program where 1,000 homeless people are fed nutritious meals every Saturday of each month. EJ continues to serve challenged and underserved communities and has a desire to make a positive impact on people s lives. EJ takes great pride in planning block parties where residents from communities such as Holly Park and Alemany Housing Complex celebrate their neighborhood. When asked about the recent Holly Park Block Party, EJ took pride in the success of the event where residents, neighbors (including Mayor Breed), and neighborhoods came together in a spirit of collaboration, preparation, and connection. EJ is grateful for so many motivated, caring, and dedicated people, community members, community groups, and City government (with special thanks to Nick Chapman at ISCOTT/MTA and Daniel Homsey from NEN) coming together to plan the upcoming November 3rd Alemany Block Party on Ellsworth Street from 11AM-2PM. 4 Page 4 Upcoming N.E.R.T events in our Ingleside Bernal South Neighborhood Starting August 14, 2018 N.E.R.T is providing a series of 6 evening classes on Tuesday s. The start time is 06:30pm, and the location will be the Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center (515 Cortland Avenue). Saturday, September 8, 2018 a neighborhood block party will be held on the 100 block of Park Street. A staging drill may be held Saturday September 22, 2018 at 11:00am. 5 Page 5 Incidents: Incident Date Monday, October 1 st, 2018 Arrests: 1:35am 1500 Blk. Guerrero Theft Ingleside Officers Seavey and Jensen were out patrolling for car burglars when they happened upon a suspect closing the trunk on Toyota Camry parked in a driveway. The suspect, who tried to peddle away on a bicycle before being stopped, told the officers that he had just closed the trunk out of courtesy to the owner. However, the car owner s friend, who observed the theft, said the items taken from the trunk belonged in the car and not with the thief. The suspect was cited for theft and released at the scene. Report number: 180742095 3:27pm Bosworth/Diamond Assault A 13yrs old young man was picked on and assaulted in the area of Bosworth and Diamond Street. Sgt Ueber was the first unit to arrive and was able to get a description of the suspect from a crossing guard who saw the suspect flee from the area. Several units including some Taraval Units searched the Portola Area and were able to track the suspect down hiding inside the Juvenile Justice Center. The victim said that the inebriated suspect for no reason chased after him and struck him across the head with a large brown bottle. The owner of Canyon Market Approached Sgt Ueber and said the suspect came into the market earlier and stole the same brown bottle from the store. The young man was treated on scene and released to the care of his father. The suspect on the other hand was transported to Ingleside Station where he was booked on several felony charges. Report Number: 180743861 Serious Incidents: 12:40am Mission/Silver Arson Officer Jensen and Seavey responded to the area of Mission and Silver to assist the fire department regarding fire damage to a Muni bus shelter. The officers spoke to the fire department who said they got a call of a fire in the area. When they arrived they saw a small flame along one side of the shelter. The fire department was able to extinguish the flame and called the police department as well as Muni. Video footage was also requested from cameras in the area. Report Number: 180742039
6 Page 6 Incidents: Incident Date Sunday, September 30 th, 2018 Arrests: 9:15am 400 Blk. France Stolen Vehicle Ingleside Officers Peregrina and Cornejo-Rodriguez were on routine patrol when they spotted a Toyota Camry without license plates making an illegal left turn. They pulled the driver over who didn t have a license, insurance, or proper registration. She did have a booking bracelet from the County Jail with her picture. A check of the VIN number revealed the car was stolen from an address on Raymond Street. The driver was arrested and transported to Ingleside Station for booking. Report number: 180740328 Serious Incidents: 12:15am 500 Blk. Raymond Arson An older BMW on fire prompted dispatch to send Ingleside Officers Billings and Anderson to investigate. When they arrived they found the fire extinguished by San Francisco Fire Department personnel. The BMW was towed to impound for further investigation. Report number: 180739757 2:40am 1800 Blk. Alemany Carjacking A woman unloading items from the trunk of her Lexus was suddenly approached by a man holding a gun. The suspect, wearing a mask and a hoodie, demanded the keys to the woman s car which she quickly gave up. The suspect then got in the car and drove away south on Alemany. Ingleside Officers Jensen and Seavey searched the surrounding area for the vehicle without success. Report number: 180739973 3:45am 400 Blk. Rolph Burglary A couple asleep in an upstairs bedroom were awakened by a loud sound. They told Ingleside Officers Jensen and Sgt. Hoang that they looked at surveillance video and noticed two suspects inside their car in the garage. The husband dialed police and the officers arrived shortly after the suspects exited the garage and escaped. The officers determined the suspects used a crowbar to enter the garage. The officers recorded surveillance video of the suspects inside the garage for use by investigators. Report number: 180740027 4:43am Seneca & Alemany Robbery A man walking home from a club was suddenly approached by two men, one of whom had a gun. The suspects demanded his wallet which the victim surrendered. Before leaving with the property, the suspects punched the victim several times in the face and stomach. Ingleside Officers Jensen and Seavey arrived on scene and summoned medical help for the victim. Report number: 180740055
7 Page 7 Incidents: Incident Date Saturday, September 29 th, 2018 Arrests: 3:07am Unit Blk. Crescent D.U.I Ingleside Officers Jensen and Zhao were dispatched to Mission and Crescent on a report of two men parked in the intersection while passed out in the car and covered in vomit. Officer Jensen woke up the driver and guided him as he staggered to the sidewalk. He was given a roadside sobriety test which he failed. A breath test revealed a blood alcohol concentration almost three times the legal limit. Inside the car were several empty bottles of beer. A blood sample was also drawn before the driver was transported to the County Jail for booking. Report number: 180737563 Serious Incidents: 2:40am 1800 Blk. of Sunnydale Discharging of a Firearm A report of shots fired prompted dispatch to send Ingleside Officers Anderson Billings to investigate. When they arrived they found shell casings in the street and several parked cars damaged by gunshots. Fortunately, no one was hurt or injured in this incident. Report number: 180737529 1:23pm San Bruno & Ordway Suspicious Occurrence A witness called police to report a woman being robbed of her purse by two suspects. Ingleside Officers Suguitan and Chan searched the area and were unable to find either the suspects or the victim. The witness gave a description of two men who took the victim s purse and ran to a waiting Toyota that sped away. Report number: 180738414
8 Page 8 Incidents: Incident Date Friday, September 28 th, 2018 Arrests: 3:50am 4400 Blk. Mission Recovered Vehicle Ingleside Officers Billings and Anderson were on routine patrol when they spotted a parked vehicle that had been reported stolen from Hertz Rental Car in Santa Clara. The officers removed the driver and placed him in custody. His passenger was detained but later released at the scene. A search of the Infiniti SUV turned up shaved keys used to steal several makes of vehicles. The driver was arrested and transported to Ingleside Station and booked on a couple felonies. Report number: 180734989 9:15am 300 Blk. Woodside Robbery Ingleside Officers Little and Naval were dispatched to the Juvenile Justice Center to arrest a 14-year old suspect wanted for a District street robbery that occurred a few days before. The suspect had been identified as a middle school student who was due in court for an unrelated matter. When she showed up the officers arrested her and placed her in custody at the Juvenile Justice Center. Report number: 180732585 10:38pm 200 Blk. Athens D.U.I A Muni driver called police after spotting a Nissan Frontier Pickup stopped in the middle of the street. The truck was blocking the whole street and the driver appeared to be asleep. Ingleside Officers Lozano and McCall were dispatched and arrived after the ambulance took the driver to the hospital. They then traveled to San Francisco General Hospital and interviewed the driver who appeared extremely inebriated. The driver agreed to a blood alcohol test and one was administered by a phlebotomist. A records check revealed he was unlicensed and the suspect was arrested at the hospital for DUI. 9 Page 9 Incidents: Incident Date Friday, September 28 th, 2018 Continued: Serious Incidents: 3:50pm Alemany & Ottawa Aggravated Assault Three other Ingleside Officers, Wise, Martinez, and Portillo, were dispatched to San Francisco General Hospital to interview a stabbing victim. After they arrived, the victim said he was stabbed in the arm by an unknown man in a car with a box cutter. The driver of the car had asked the victim for directions and when the victim approached the passenger window he was stabbed before the suspects drove away. The victim drove himself to the hospital for treatment. Report number: 180736587 6:00pm Portola & Evelyn Way Indecent Exposure A fifteen year old girl was surprised and startled when the driver of a red pickup truck exposed himself as she crossed the street. The young woman ran toward the nearby pharmacy to call police but during her trip the driver drove by and repeated the assault. Ingleside Officers Wise, Portillo, and Martinez searched the area for the suspect without success. Report number: 180736816
10 Page 10 Incidents: Incident Date Thursday, September 27 th, 2018 Arrests: There are no arrests to report. Serious Incidents: 8:30am Unit Blk. Wilder Robbery A man walking down the street was suddenly confronted by three men who wanted his cellphone. The victim told Ingleside Officer Naval that he told the suspects he didn t have one at which point two of the suspects pushed him to the ground and punched and kicked him several times before taking his duffle bag. The suspects then ran away in an unknown direction. The victim refused medical attention and Officer Naval was able to download nearby security camera footage of the incident. Report number: 180732585 1:45pm Unit Blk. Rolph Burglary A woman in her home heard a loud noise emanating from downstairs. She walked toward her garage door and saw an unknown man inside her home. She told Ingleside Officers Peralta and Dang that she yelled at the man who then ran out of the home and got into a gray Acura MDX. Peralta and Dang scoured the neighborhood and discovered security video from neighbors showing the burglars and their car. They also found damage to the garage door which led to the burglars entering the home. Report number: 180733323
11 Page 11 Incidents: Incident Date Wednesday, September 26 th, 2018 Arrests: There are no arrests to report. Serious Incidents: 1:50pm 700 Portola Drive Robbery Two young women entered a drug store and went shopping for cosmetics. Store personnel watched as the pair loaded up shopping bags with items and then ran out of the store to a waiting car. Ingleside Officers Watts and Lopez-Martinez arrived and viewed surveillance video of the robbery suspects and recorded it for use by the Station s investigative team. Report number: 18731098 1:56pm 500 Blk. 28 th Street Robbery A plumber called police after being robbed of some expensive equipment. He told Ingleside Officers Peralta and Dang that he was working out of the back of his truck when an unknown man approached him and made the victim think he had a weapon in his waistband. The suspect grabbed some expensive video equipment and ran to a waiting car that sped away in an unknown direction. Report number: 180731101
12 Page 12 Incidents: Incident Date Tuesday, September 25 th, 2018 Arrests: 1:28pm Unit Blk. Valerton Ct. Burglary A resident of Ellis Street in the Tenderloin decided to go shopping for clothes and jewelry in the Ingleside District. He picked two homes instead of a store to burglarize. Ingleside Officers Lustenberger and Archilla responded to a home and found numerous items of clothing, jewelry, electronics, and other items stolen from the residences. The owner of one of the homes, who called police, said the residence was being used as a vacation rental for several Italian visitors. He told the officers he got a call from a neighbor who said there was a man climbing over fences in the neighborhood. When the home owner checked surveillance video he observed the suspect entering and exiting the home through a backyard door. The suspect was later arrested during another burglary attempt on Rosella Court (see below) and then booked at Ingleside Station. All the stolen items were returned to their owners. Report number: 180728926 4:05pm Persia & Lisbon Robbery Ingleside Officers Marshall and Hensel were dispatched to a report of a cellphone robbery. The elderly woman victim and her daughter told the officers that two juveniles showed a knife and demanded the elderly victim s phone. Once they got the phone they ran away. Fortunately, the daughter traced the stolen phone to a MUNI bus at 18 th and Mission Streets. Ingleside Officers Downs and Barajas found the bus, and using software, made the phone ring. The two suspects on the bus with the phone were placed in custody after the victim, driven to the scene, identified one of the pair as the robber. He was taken to the Juvenile Justice Center and booked for robbery and his accomplice released at the scene. Report number: 180728299 4:32pm Unit Blk. Rosella Ct. Narcotics Ingleside Officers Lustenberger and Archilla were again dispatched to a report of a burglary in progress. They found the suspect in the backyard of a home with items stolen from the previous burglary on Valerton Ct. They also found him possessing a significant amount of methamphetamine. He was arrested for the both burglaries and the narcotics charges. Report number: 180728368 Serious Incidents: There are no serious incidents to report.
