He was educated first at St Paul s School and then University College, London, before entering the London Hospital as a medical student in 1884. He went quickly through the ranks and was fellow by 1903. He worked at the London Hospital for many years, working in conjunction with them when he set up a private consultancy, first on Harley Street, and then on Wimpole Street. Dawson became a full-physician at the London Hospital in 1906, and was appointed physician-extraordinary to King Edward VII; it is perhaps for his close work with the Royal Family that he is most well known. During the First World War Dawson was commandant of the 2 nd London General Hospital in the Territorial Army, and was in France as a consulting physician, acting rank Major General. In 1915 he attended the King after a serious fall from his horse whilst he was visiting troops at the front. He spent four years in France studying conditions and writing papers, alongside his hospital duties. His main realisation was the lack of fitness among the British troops which sparked his drive for a healthier, fitter Britain. He began his campaign for national health with lectures in 1918 The nation s welfare: the future of the medical profession, given to the West London Medico-Chirurgical Society. This led to Dawson being drawn into governmental consultations and he was made chairman of the consultative council on medical and allied services in 1919. The Dawson Report released by the council was a precursor of what was to come years later in the ational Health Service legislations. In 1920 he became Baron, which in turn became Viscount Dawson in 1936; as a result he was the first active medical practitioner to enter the Lords. He held several positions of importance including examiner for the London Hospital Royal College of Physicians, served on the councils of the Ministry of Health and the Medical Research Council and was President of the British Medical Association and Royal College of Physicians. As a likeable character he was often trusted and his word had much sway both in the medical profession and within the government. As a result when his name was attached to a letter to The Times in 1929, alongside several others, there was much interest aroused. The letter was regarding the positioning of Battersea Power Station and the problems that would ensue from the emissions that would flow, thanks to London s prevailing winds, over many sites of importance in London, including the Houses of Parliament. Dawson s emphasis on national and public health added much gravity to the letter, and was arguably instrumental in ensuring that the London Power Company installed the world s first Flue Gas Desulphurisation systems at Battersea Power Station. Dawson received many honours, and he was appointed Knight Commander, KCB. He died on 7th March 1945.
