Second Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Carpathian Convention (COP2) 17-19 June 2008 Bucharest, Romania INFORMATION FOR PARTICIPANTS Meeting venue The Second Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Carpathian Convention (COP2) will be held in Bucharest, Romania. COP2 will meet from Tuesday, 17 June to Thursday, 19 June 2008. The meeting will be held at the: Athenee Palace Hilton Hotel 1-3 Episcopiei Street, District 1, 010292, Bucharest Romania Registrations Registration for COP2 will commence on 17 June 2008 from 12:00 to 14:00. Based on the registration forms received by the Secretariat from the participants, name badges will be prepared and handed over at the registration desk only upon the presentation of a valid identification card with a photo. Official opening The official opening of the COP2 meeting will take place at 14:00 on Tuesday, 17 June 2008, at the main conference room. Documents Delegates are kindly reminded to bring their own copies of the meeting documents to the COP2 meeting, including the information documents. For reasons of economy, only Parties and Governments shall be provided with one set of documents per delegation. Directions to the meeting venue From Henri Coanda International Airport, taxis are available to take you directly to the Athenee Palace Hilton Bucharest Hotel. The journey normally takes around 40 minutes from the airport to the hotel forecourt. The taxi cars bringing customers to the airport have free access in front of the International Departures Terminal and Domestic Flights Terminal. FLY taxi cars are available in front of the International Arrivals Terminal. Official language The official language of Romania is the Romanian language. English is spoken in the majority restaurants and hotels in Bucharest. Weather and Time Zone Information In June the daytime temperatures range between 25 35 C. The standard time zone is GMT + 2 hours. Credit cards Most hotels, rent-a-car companies and some restaurants and stores accept payment by credit cards, all types being valid: American Express, Diners Club, Euro Master Card or VISA. However, it is recommended to ask first. Currency exchange The national currency is Leu (Lei in the plural). The usual abbreviation is RON. There are notes of 1 Leu, 5 Lei, 10 Lei, 50 Lei, 100 Lei, 200 Lei and 500 Lei and coins of 1 Ban, 5 Bani, 10 Bani and 50 Bani. The conversion from the old Lei (ROL) to the new Lei (RON) 1 RON = 10,000 ROL was made in 2005. Because of this, many Romanians still use the equivalent in old Lei to ask or tell a price. In Romania, payments in stores and restaurants are made in the national currency. The Dollar and the Euro can be exchanged at any exchange office. It is recommended to use the exchange offices within banks. The authorized exchange offices may use a more disadvantageous exchange rate than the official one and may charge large commissions. The exchange rate may vary from one place to another and you should compare several places. Accommodation Delegates are responsible for making their own hotel bookings. The list of hotels is in Annex 4. It is recommended that delegates arrange their hotel accommodation as early as possible to secure rooms at the hotels. Representatives of Serbia and Ukraine should apply for a visa at a Romanian diplomatic mission or consular post prior to their arrival in Romania. Therefore, if needed, they could ask for visa support letters from UNEP Vienna Interim Secretariat of the Carpathian Convention.
