Indoor Bowling in Ontario Background Outside of the summer months and outdoor bowling season, there are opportunities to play different formats of bowls games at indoor locations. At this time there is no sanctioned indoor facility in Ontario that conforms to international indoor bowls standards. However, there are alternatives that provide good opportunities and a fair surface for both social and competitive bowlers, as well as facilities where the carpet and short mat games are played. This document serves to offer information about those different games and to list known facilities where indoor bowls are played. Types of indoor bowls games 1. Format ARPET BOWLING. Played on a mat 30 feet in length by 6 feet wide. A smaller bowl is used, provided by the bowls club. Played at various locations where the transportable mats are fixed or laid down for the game. 2. Format SM SHORT MAT BOWLING. Played on a regulation carpet 45 feet in length by 6 feet wide. Regular bowls are used on this surface. Played at various locations where the transportable mats are fixed or laid down for the game. 3. Format OTH LOSE TO REGULAR LENGTH BOWLING. Usually played on surfaces with modified width of 12 feet, and length around 90 ft. There may be space for 2 or more rinks and no fixed mat. Regular bowls are used. 4. Format REG FULL OR LOSE TO FULL LENGTH BOWLING. Surface will be close to 120 feet in length and regular width. Played on a large multi-use surface (primarily laid for soccer) with multiple rinks. Regular bowls are used. Locations The table on the following pages contains the locations and clubs that we presently have been aware of. For some clubs, we have limited information.
