We plan to see if this program works when we ask club members to RSVP for the New Zealand welcoming party and requesting pot luck items. Are you ready for a South American adventure? Are you ready for a South American adventure? We ve been invited by two clubs in Brazil to visit them next summer. It is actually the winter season in Brazil. The first journey will be with the Ribeirao Preto club for one week, then we will travel to Salvador-Bahia for a 5- day home stay with their club. The estimated Journey price is $900 per Ambassador and approximately $1500 for airfare, not including optional tours such as Iguazu Falls. Salvador is located along the balmy tropical Atlantic waters on the Bay of All Saints and is one of Brazil's oldest colonial cities. The city is known as the "melting pot" of Brazil where the Portuguese, African and indigenous people came together to form the "Bahian" culture. They live in what's known as the "Land of Happiness." We will learn about the history of the Portuguese settlers, the African slave trade (which was banned in 1835) and the blending of these two groups with the existing indigenous people. Sugar was king in the colonial times and we will hear about its importance in the region. The club has some great activities planned such as exploring the UNESCO neighborhood of Pelourinho with its rich Baroque churches and colorful colonial architecture, a day on a schooner visiting islands of the bay, visiting the tranquil beach village of Praia do Forte and a sea turtle rescue center and a trip to the town of Cachoeira with its colonial architecture and important connection to Brazil's fight for independence.

Ribeirao Preto is an economic and business regional center and is located in one of the most developed areas in the country. It has a population of about 600 thousand inhabitants and is proud to have a high social index. In the 19th and 20th centuries Ribeirao Preto was considered the coffee capital of the state. During that period the city built the Pedro II Theater, which held several European productions in the early 20th century. After that, Pedro II Theater experienced a decline, until it caught fire in the early 1980 s. It was restored and modernized in the 1990 s and now is the home of the Ribeirao Preto Symphony Orchestra and is among the largest opera houses in Brazil. A significant event in the history of the city was the opening of the Antarctica Brewery Company in 1911. This led to the opening of many beer houses in the city, one of which was named Pinguim and became very famous. It brought national fame to the city because of the fantastic quality of its draft beer. Ribeirao Preto is also a pioneer in the establishment of microbreweries in Brazil. Besides culture and beer, Ribeirao Preto also has many gardens, parks, a zoo and museums. The Coffee Museum, is the only one of its type in the world, having a detailed and rare exposition of the rise and fall of the coffee barons. We are planning a side trip to Iguazu Falls which is in southern Brazil. The colossal power of these thundering falls, viewable from both Argentina and Brazil, and accessible from Paraguay, is a mesmerizing sight: 275 separate falls in a U-shaped formation pound the water below in raging cascades with a deafening intensity. An application link to signup for this Journey is at https://friendshipforce.azurewebsites.net/wpcontent/uploads/2018/02/ambassador-application-and-agreement-1.pdf. The hosting capacity for tehse Clubs is 16 Ambassadors. Please contact Jim Steggall at bjjfs@mchsi.com or (319) 651-1092 if you are interested in this Journey.

Strategic Plan for IC/CR FF Club The board has been discussing a strategic plan for our organization. Several goals have been developed and committees are being formed to discuss these goals and for the development of action plans under each category. If you have and interest in any of these areas and would like to goin the discussion please contact Jim or one of the board members. Goal #1 Maintain membership at not less than 70 members. Goal #2 Increase active participation of members. Goal #3 Increase IC CR Freindship Force visibility in the community. Goal #4 Identify, mentor and train members in leadership roles. Goal #5 Expand journey planning. Justice for our Neighbors On September 18, 2018 our Friendship Force club will be hosting a meal for "Justice for our Neighbors", an evening of donated legal assistance for those wishing to immigrate into our country. The response from our club has been outstanding. We would like to thank Jean Thomas for organizing and all of the club members who will be helping. This is a wonderful example of putting into practice the spirit of Friendship Force. Leo at Red Ginger We had a great time at the August Leo at the Red Ginger. Be sure to mark your mark you calendars for the next one September 19 at Reds Alehouse in North Liberty.
