TIMOR LESTE PROJECT WR-013-2011 January 13 th TO 28 th 2014 TEAM Max Bird - Team Leader / Rotary Club of Kwinana Bob Cooper Rotary Club of Kwinana Andrew Baird Volunteer Mario Dejesus Rotary Club of Dili (Timor-Leste) Father Manuel da Silva Ximenes (Laga) Leopoldina Guterres School principal (Baguia)

TASK To install a rain water harvesting system at the Baguia orphanage, utilising the roof of the new school currently been built by others Day 1. Monday 13 th Team departed Perth 0830 arriving in Dili 1700. We were met at the airport by Mario Dejesus from the Rotary Club of Dili and Paulo from Rentlo car hire. Picked up hire vehicle and the ute kindly loaned to us from the Water For The Hungry Months Project, dropped luggage at Beachside Hotel, and proceeded straight to Dili Rotary Club meeting Day 2. Tuesday 14 th The day was spent shopping at the Singapore hardware shop in Dili, for items required to complete the task at the Baguia orphanage, a major plus was that we managed to get all the required items in the one shop with some modifications to the order, this was a real bonus and saved a lot of time, as I had expected to run all over town over several days to complete the order Sorting the Fittings Pipes loaded on WFTHM Ute And a full load in the troopie

Day 3. Wednesday 15 th Left Dili 0915 for Laga stopping at East Timor Roofing Company (ETR) at Bacau to collect tools, pumps and generator. We arrived at Laga at 1520, and then proceeded to the orphanage to inspect the water system that was installed in May 2013, We were informed the new submersible pump that was installed in May 2003 had failed that week, we proceeded to installed our spare pump having the system working again that afternoon, Father Manual to arrange repairs the original pump Day 4. Thursday 16 th At 0800 left Laga for Baguia road very rough and twisty never got out of second gear for 3.5 hours arriving in Baguia at 1400, apart from been a slow trip the only problem we had was readjusting the pipes on the WFTHM Ute (on loan to us from Water For The Hungry Months Project) and a puncture, fortunately this was only 1km from the local service station and the tyre was repaired The service station your tyre you change it The convoy on the road Day 5. Friday 17 th

We started installing the pipe work on the new school and preparing the hardstand site for the new tanks Bob you know what happens to old farts on ladders Mario head down and hard at work Day 6. Saturday 18 th Continued to install the pipe work on the school and prepare the tank site Mario fitting the pipe Bob doing the easy part Mario s crew hard at work installing the hardstand, tank positions marked out in blue paint

Mario s crew has the hardstand ready to install the tanks Day 7. Sunday 19 th We were invited to attend the funeral of the local King of the Baguia district who had unfortunately passed away just prior to our arrival, at the ripe old age of 103, we were also asked after the service to join in the procession to the grave site and other activities planned for the day, we decided to take off a rest day and attend as requested School Kids trooping up to the Kings house The Kings Guard escorting the procession The Kings Guard of Honour Pall bearers moving the King to his resting place

Day 8. Monday 20 th After a great days rest and an entertaining dinner at Leo s house the hard work on the rain water system commences again with Bob and Andrew continuing with the pipe work to the school, Mario with his crew digging the trench across the road. We are expecting the tanks to arrive from ETR mid-afternoon today and will be in final position this afternoon all going well Mario s crew have the hard job of digging across the road First tank arrives and in place The remaining three tanks arrive Many hands make light work If this rain keeps up tanks will be filled in no time

Four tanks unloaded close to final position The Baguia community thank you drink Day 9. Tuesday 21 st Guys done a great job the tanks are in there final position and connected, minor modifications to the plan tanks are now connect with an internal equaliser in a H pattern instead of an outside ring around the tanks, this is because the original location was not suitable and we could not maintain the a square design The down piping from the school to the tanks was also completed and once the last down pipe is fitted in the morning we will have water to the tanks

Day 10. Wednesday 22 nd Final connections made to the girls school with 25mm pipe water connecting the two holding tanks in the orphanage, which will then feed to the boy s orphanage as well Water is now running into the main tanks, and is just above the outlets on all four tanks the equaliser system is working well (Thanks Ted great Job) The water head is not enough to displace the air in the 25mm pipe to the girl s next rain will hopefully increase the head of water enough to displace the air allowing the water to flow. Andrew with the last down pipe Yes Bob that s the last down pipe now start strapping Andrew I think its Raining are you Finished yet Water running into the girls orphanage

Day 11 Thursday 23 rd Finished strapping the down pipes to the school the last twelve, then fitted a bleed valve to the 25mm pipe to get out the air out of the system allowing the water to flow to the girls, water is now flowing into the holding tanks at the girls and will feed to the boys from there The girls also gave us a great afternoon tea and apologise they could not give more (but had nothing) Running water to the Girls kitchen Father Manuel blessing the Water to the Girls Ablutions That s it Done Great Job Thanks Guys The girls saying thank you to us

Day 12 Friday 24 th Handed the system over to Leo the school principal and the head boy, he worked with us from day one and knows the system well and will be able to carry out minor repairs with the fittings and pipe we left for him Travelled back to laga and show the local guy how to change out the pump for the sisters when our cheap Chinese pump fails, plus fit a power point at the pump house as the existing pump is hard wired in at this stage, this will allow for the change out of pumps as required, the orphanage now has three pumps to work with, Father Manual found one new pump in a container, Also discussed with Father Manual about the water usage at the Laga orphanage as one of the other fathers is disconnecting the water to the school to water the animals, and does not reconnect it Held discussions with Father Manuel about the next stage it will be very desirable to have a knowable local person who the Xefe (Village Chief) trust, and also involve the Xefe in the work as he must take control and own the work at completion The water tanks at Laga now full Well fed & watered happy kids studying after school Day 13 Saturday 25 th Sort out equipment and carry out an inventory of all equipment in containers at Bacau and travel to Dili Finally arriving back to our hotel 1400 for a long overdue shower and a meal (Fish & Chips)

Day 14 Sunday 26 th Day of rest and joined the embassy staff celebrating Australia day at the beachside hotel Unfortunately enjoyed that much forgot to take happy snaps Day 15 Monday 27 th Fix the Mirror on WFTHM Ute Day 16 Tuesday 28 th The group then departed Dili after returning hire vehicle at 1100. Arriving back in Perth 1730 with what we feel was a good result Again thank you to a great team with healthy debate and great results
