Dear Collectors Welcome to our final edition of the Stamp Bulletin for 2018. By now you would have received news of the special stamp issued to celebrate the amazing record of 26 consecutive race wins recently set by Australian champion mare, Winx. Michael Zsolt Manager, Philatelic Australia Post All applications for the reproduction of Australian stamps should be made in writing to: Manager Philatelic Australia Post GPO Box 1777 MELBOURNE VIC 3001 mailorder@auspost.com.au This edition contains information on the range of Winx products released. You can also pre-order the Winx medallion cover and special 26 Wins sheetlet pack to be released in October. Also presented are three new international stamp designs for the forthcoming new letter rates, and a sheetlet of five Drought Relief stamps, the sale of which will help those so badly affected by drought. Released in September, each booklet of five stamps sold will provide a $2 donation to our farming communities through Rural Aid Limited. These booklets are only available while stocks last. A single base-rate stamp marks the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle earlier in the year, and a set of five stamps represents the final issue of our five-year program commemorating the Great War of 1914 1918. On 11 November 1918, the Armistice of Compiègne was signed. The end of the Great War also meant the return of Australian soldiers, and a repatriation program was introduced. Two stamps mark the centenary of the Repatriation Department, now known as the Department of Veterans Affairs. The construction of the original Macquarie Lighthouse 200 years ago has inspired the Lighthouses of Sydney stamp issue. Our Christmas stamp issues will suit religious observation as well as simple seasonal greetings. The designs for Christmas Island Christmas present a modernday surfing Santa competing against a Red-footed Booby to bring in the Christmas cheer. The range of collectable gift ideas with this edition includes our annual collections of the year s stamps. Always great value, the collection of gummed stamps includes an exclusive minisheet based on the popular Australian Finches stamp series. australiapostcollectables.com.au Impressions 2018 On sale 5 November Sign up to the Collectables newsletter today! australiapostcollectables.com.au

In recent years, several indices of liveability have rated cities around the world. These include the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) Global Liveability Ranking, Mercer s Quality of Living Ranking and Monocle s Quality of Life Survey. These various surveys are based on a number of measures, including political and economic stability; access to healthcare, education, public transport and recreational activities; quality of infrastructure; and the integrity of the environment. Australian cities consistently rate very highly in these surveys, with Melbourne being identified as one of the world s most liveable cities (Global Livability Index) for the last seven years up to 2017. In the 2017 survey, Adelaide, Perth, Sydney and Brisbane were all ranked in the top 20. Adelaide has a population of around 1.4 million. The city was founded in 1836 and named after Queen Adelaide, the German wife of King William IV. The city was originally intended for free settlers and is one of the few Australian capitals without a convict foundation. Brisbane has 2.4 million inhabitants, and is the country s third most populous city. The city was named after Sir Thomas Brisbane, the governor of New South Wales from 1821 to 1825. Melbourne is Australia s second most populous city, with a population within the broader metropolitan area of nearly five million inhabitants. The city was founded in 1835 and was initially named Batmania in 1837, after early explorer John Batman. The town was renamed in honour of the British prime minister of the day, William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne.

The prince is sixth in line to the British throne after his father, HRH Prince Charles; his elder brother, HRH Prince William; and his nephews and niece, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. Ms Markle, an American by birth, is a former actress. Invited guests included 600 seated in the chapel and 2,000 in the castle grounds. The televised wedding was viewed by an estimated 29 million people around the world. The wedding ceremony was conducted by the Right Reverend David Conner, Dean of Windsor, while the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Justin Welby, officiated. The Most Reverend Bishop Michael Curry, bishop and primate of the Episcopal Church in USA, gave the address and the Kingdom Choir performed a moving rendition of Ben E. King s Stand by Me. The bride wore an elegant dress designed by Clare Waight Keller, the British artistic director of the French fashion house Givenchy. Formerly HRH Prince Henry of Wales, the groom was given the title HRH The Duke of Sussex shortly before the ceremony. On her marriage, Meghan Markle became HRH The Duchess of Sussex.

In the early months of 1918, the Germans began a major offensive of the Western Front which broke through British lines and threatened the important city of Amiens. Australian troops were rushed to help defend Amiens, fighting notable actions at Hébuterne, Dernancourt and Villers-Bretonneux in early April. German troops succeeded in capturing Villers-Bretonneux on 24 April, but were ejected by Australians troops the following evening. Amiens was saved and the line stabilised, allowing the allies to make preparations for a counter-offensive. In May, Major General John Monash was appointed commander of the Australian Corps and promoted to lieutenant general. A meticulous planner and brilliant tactician, he executed the British Army s first offensive in more than six months. With elements from the Australian Corps attacking German positions near the village of Hamel on the morning of 4 July, they succeeded in straightening a bend in the line in just 93 minutes. They applied these tactical lessons at the Battle of Amiens, fought by British, Australian and Canadian troops near Villers-Bretonneux on 8 August. This significant action was referred to by German commanders as the black day of the German Army". The last Australian infantry assault of the war was at Montbrehain on 5 October 1918. On 11 November, the Armistice of Compiègne was signed, ending fighting on the Western Front; an Armistice had already silenced the guns in the Middle East. By then, some 60,000 Australians had died during the war and more than 156,000 had been wounded.

In early 1917, Prime Minister Billy Hughes promised Australia s armed forces: When you come back, we will look after you. Following the end of World War I, tens of thousands of Australian soldiers returned from fighting in France, Belgium and the Middle East, many of them scarred or disabled, mentally and physically. Governments around Australia realised that a system of repatriation was necessary to prepare these soldiers for a return to civilian life. This led to the establishment of the Commonwealth Repatriation Commission and Repatriation Department as well as Repatriation Boards in each state. The government provided war pensions, health care, education and training, employment and housing, soldier settlement, and remembrance and commemoration. Their work continued in the wake of subsequent conflicts, from World War II to more recent military operations including in East Timor, Iraq, Afghanistan, border protection and humanitarian assistance. A century on, the Department of Veterans Affairs (as the Repatriation Department is now known) and its state counterparts are still committed to maintaining and enhancing the physical and financial wellbeing of serving and ex-serving men and women and their families.

Commissioned by the Governor of New South Wales, Major General Lachlan Macquarie (1762 1824), the deterioration of the tower led to its eventual replacement. The replacement lighthouse, completed in 1883, sits at Outer South Head, in Vaucluse, Sydney, near the site of the original. The original Macquarie was the only lighthouse in the area until the appearance of Hornby Lighthouse in 1858. The construction of Hornby at Inner South Head, Sydney, was prompted by two shipwrecks at The Heads, both in 1857: the wrecking of the Dunbar and the Catherine Adamson. Roberstons Point Lighthouse (1910) is located in Cremorne Point, a harbour-side suburb on the lower North Shore of Sydney. It is an early example of the use of reinforced concrete in Australian lighthouse construction. Sitting in the shores of Sydney Harbour, it is still an important guide for vessels using this busy waterway. This stamp issue of five stamps includes two designs for those who observe the religious significance of Christmas. The stamps represent the Madonna and Child and Musical Angels and are based on original artworks by well-known Melbourne-based academic, artist and teacher, Ursula Betka. Ursula is highly regarded as a practitioner and teacher of the traditional methods of icon and early Italian panel painting and gilding. Her exquisite paintings previously featured in the 2005 Christmas stamp issue. The paintings which form the basis of this year s religious stamps were rendered according to the age-old techniques of medieval Italian panel painting. The glowing, jewel-like colours were created with egg tempera, made from a blend of natural pigments and egg yolk, painted onto a wooden support. Before the application of paint, the panel is prepared with a smooth white chalk-like surface of gypsum, known as gesso in Italian, to provide the perfectly smooth surface required for the application of gold leaf. The exquisite gold brocade effect was achieved with burnished 23-karat gold leaf and the traditional medieval method of sgraffito, where the decoration is delineated with a fine, sharp metal point. For those who do not celebrate the religious story, three typographical stamps refer to popular Christmas carols, gift ribbons and Christmas tree decorations. The joyous, bright typographical stamps are designed by Sydneybased Luke Lucas, a freelance illustrator, designer and art director. He is particularly drawn to typographical design and enjoys that through subtleties like a slight shift in line weight, the elongation of a tail or the arc you use, a letter can go from contemporary to traditional or happy to sad in a single stroke.

Her work features in children s books and in magazines, and her illustrations are generally created digitally, using PhotoShop. The two stamps in the issue are held together by a light-hearted Christmas season narrative. They depict a race between Santa and a Red-footed Booby to the shores of Christmas Island, with the Booby doing its darndest to get the Christmas tree in place before Santa arrives with the gifts. This narrative is extended through the minisheet, which shows a whole ensemble of local characters watching on the Blue-tailed Skink, Red Crab, Green Turtle, Golden Bosunbird, Christmas Island Frigatebird, Emerald Dove, Christmas Island Hawk-Owl, Java Sparrow and a host of tropical fish. A Surfing Santa Christmas stamp released in 1977 was possibly Australia s most controversial stamp 1994142 Minisheet $2.65
