President s Report New members, Merv and Cobi John s car Welcome to our new club Treasurer, Neil Brown and Club Captain Mary Jean Wood. I hope you both enjoy your new positions within the South Canterbury Zephyr & Zodiac Enthusiasts Club. I look forward to working alongside you both over the coming year. I would also like to thank the members who had confidence in the work I have done over the past two years for the club, by voting me in for another term. I will endeavour to do my best for the club over the next twelve months. I always look forward to reading Wheel Torque and Issue 25 April/May 2017 was no different. It makes interesting reading and provides much to ponder over. This issue mentioned the potential difficulties being faced by historic car clubs now that the older baby boomers are reaching their 70 s and how can clubs reach out to and encourage younger members? If we do not start encouraging the younger generation to appreciate our Zephyrs now, who will buy them when you, the baby boomer need to sell your classic cars? Some members of our club have mentioned in the past, that to generate more interest in our club we could look at opening the club up to other English makes of cars which do not have a car club in South Canterbury e.g. Ford Escorts and Cortina s both of which are developing a strong following with the younger generation. A point for you, are members to ponder. I also found an article in The Timaru Courier regarding reducing emissions when lighting a fire using the upside down method. Mr Chamberlain was concerned Environment Canterbury had not tested the marginal differences in low-emission and ultra-low-emission log burner. To quote What I m suggesting is that ECan has done an economy run between a Zephyr and a Mercedes in terms of low and ultra-low-emission burners Mr Chamberlain is naturally one of the older baby boomers who remembers Zephyrs! The All British Day was held in wintery conditions however if one had dressed for this an enjoyable day was had. There was a good turnout of cars covering many British models. It was great to see three couples in their Zed cars from Oamaru. It is always great to catch up with fellow car enthusiasts at classic car events. Until next month, safe travelling and keep healthy and warm. CLUB CAPTAIN s Report I would like to start my first report off with a big thank you to Bob Stevens for his years as Club Captain, we have had some great runs. Also thank you to members for voting me in as your new Club Captain, hope you enjoy the events that we have coming up. We had a lovely run to Geraldine on May run with a nice afternoon tea stop, see report in magazine. Over the winter months I have decided to have the runs finishing at a warm and cosy indoor stop, the winter months are just too cold to have an outside afternoon tea. Most club runs will be the 3rd Sunday and other months it will be different depending on what s on. Next Club Run is a mid winter lunch meeting 11.00 am at the Polytech for run then onto Lunch at the Town and Country Club. I have also set out the programme for the year. If you have any suggestions please contact me. Cheers Mary-Jean Wood Next Club Event July 16th 2017. Mid Winter Lunch Meet ARA / Polytech carpark 11.00am heading off for a cruise. 12.30 Lunch at Town and Country own cost. 4 13

May 21st Club Run clubs runs calling in for refreshments. Winter has certainly arrived. It s always nice to get the car out and go for a Sunday afternoon run. An excuse to have coffee and cake. It was a lovely day and nice to see younger family members coming along to our runs. Members attending were Paul and Gloria with MKI, Bob, Anne and granddaughter Sofia with MK II, Max with daughter Tania and grandson Dylan with MKII, Dave and Allison with MKI Police car, Christine and Malcolm with MKII, Jim McDonald in his Morris 1000 Truck, Merv and Cobi with their MKIII and Phil and I in MKII. Mary-Jean Wood We left the Polytech Carpark and headed out to Temuka, turning left into Waitohi and cruising through to Geraldine heading up the Downs from Cox St and parking up at the Downs lookout. Dave and Alison gave us a demonstration of the their Police car s red light flashing, of course they cannot use on the road. After a group photo we headed down through Geraldine to the Farm Orchard Shop for afternoon tea. New club members Merv and Cobi met up with us in their MKIII after coming from Ashburton where they had been involved in Wheels week. It must have been the day for car runs as there were three other car 8 9
