Fort Benton, Montana Fort Benton is referred to as the Birthplace of Montana as it was once the gateway to settlers who traveled by steamboat navigation and stage lines to settlements in Montana as well as Idaho and Canada. Fort Benton is also well known for its role in the Lewis and Clark Expedition prior to the migration of settlers to the area. On June 3, 1805 Lewis named the Marias River in honor of his cousin Miss Mariah Wood and then on June 4, 1805 Lewis and Clark camped on the site of Fort Benton. Later it became the hub of travel and trade for the entire state as over 50 steamboats a season docked in the small town and were used to transport goods into the area and gold back out to St. Louis. Today, Fort Benton maintains a strong sense of its historic roots yet has a small town fell. Tourism is a big industry in Fort Benton and the town recently received the tourism Community of the Year Award.
