In this guide you will find a wide selection of activities to enjoy once summer rolls around. Start making plans now to join us for our annual free events like the fishing derby, our canoe and kayak races, or our skateboard jam. If you have a sports fanatic we have a selection of summer camps for them to take advantage of; soccer, basketball, and golf camp - just to name a few. We also offer non-sports themed, unique two hour camps that will engage participants with plenty of fun. No matter what the interest we have something that you will enjoy! That s right, it s that time of year again to gather up the family, grab the fishing tackle and head on down to Tecumseh Park for the annual fishing derby. People of all ages are welcome to join Tecumseh Parks & Recreation along with local bass fishing legend, John Alcodray, for another chance to reel in some great prizes and gift giveaways. We are also pleased to have Busch s Fresh Food Market on site, providing a free lunch of hot dogs, chips, cookies, and water. Come out and enjoy a great morning of fishing! Sign em up for our tot baseball program, perfect for boys and girls ages 3 & 4! Your favorite tot will experience batting, catching, throwing and fielding in this parent involved program. With two sessions to choose from, we have an option for you. Tot baseball is a great way to spend some quality time with your little one this summer out at the ball diamonds at Cal Zorn Park! This league is for boys and girls, 5-6 years old. Our young players focus on learning the basics of the game while making friends along the way. The season will consist of practices as well as games throughout the entire season. Weather dependent, players will have 6 practice sessions and 5 games. This is a t-ball league with the possibility of coach pitch towards the end of the season (no machine pitch). Batting helmets, bats, and catchers equipment will be provided by the Parks & Recreation department; players must have their own mitt and ball cap. Metal cleats are prohibited. All of our baseball teams are coached by volunteers and parents, just like you! Please consider coaching a team; as our way of saying thanks, you will receive 1/2 off the price of one registration. P a g e 3 Volleyball Camp Bump, set, pass, score! Volleyball camp is taking over Tecumseh Parks and Recreation in July. This four day camp is offered for boy and girls. Campers will learn the basic fundamentals of volleyball in an environment where teamwork and fun are the main components! Campers in the 11-14 year old session will focus on player development and proper technique. When: July 20-23 Where: AJ Smith Recreation Center Must register by July 7, 2015 Ages 7-10 Times: 5:15-6:15 Cost: $50; $40 city resident Ages 11-14 Times: 6:30-8:00 Cost: $55; $45 city residents Soccer Camp with SHU Coach Oliver Summer is an excellent time to work on your soccer skills and become a better soccer player. Boys and girls are invited to join Scott Oliver and his coaching staff from Siena Heights University as they focus on helping campers improve shooting, passing, ball skills, and defense. Most importantly, this camp will emphasize the development of an individual and group attitude. Soccer camp will be a fun and positive experience for the players. Get ready for games, contests, run stations/drills, and plenty of fun! This camp takes place Monday through Thursday August 3-6 at Cal Zorn Park. Must register by July 21, 2015. Kid s Fun Camps P a g e 4 Our Kid s Fun Camps are designed to engage campers in fun activities, with each session featuring a unique theme! Campers will learn something new during each camp, such as how to dig up dinosaur bones, become familiar with a compass and map to find hidden treasure, learn the ways of becoming a pirate, and much more! Boys and girls age 6-10 are welcome and invited to participate. All sessions run from 1:30-3:30 PM on the day of the camp. Day Activity Price July 9 Ocean Day takes place at the AJ Smith Recreation Center. Campers will learn about ocean life through games and activities. Must register by June 30 $20 July 13 Trail Walk will take place at Indian Crossing Trail located behind Hayden Mill, located at 703 E. Chicago Boulevard. Must register by June 30 $15 July 16 Tie Dye Camp will take place at the AJ Smith Recreation Center. Camp includes one t-shirt to tie dye; campers are welcome to bring other articles of clothing to dye. Participants will learn about the life of a pirate through games and activities. Pirate attire is encouraged! Campers will assist Parks and Recreation staff in as they search for lost treasure! P a g e 5 Kite Camp Look it s a bird, it s a plane...no, it s the coolest flying kite you ve ever seen! Tecumseh Parks and Recreation is offering a two hour camp where boys and girls, ages 6-10, can customize and decorate their own personal kite and then give it a test flight! Each camper will receive a kite to personalize and of course, plenty of string. Space is limited to 24 participants so sign up today! Location to be determined. Make sure they are ready for fun in the sun and outfit them with some new accessories. Sign up for our two hour camp and create several pieces sure to enhance your doll s life. Campers will enjoy making unique items for their doll in a relaxed summer atmosphere. This camp is perfect for boys and girls ages 7-12. Space is limited so sign up today! Children ages 6-10 are invited to come out to Cal Zorn Park for activities like water balloon toss, slip n slide limbo, water bucket duck duck goose, water balloon dodge ball, and even a watermelon eating contest! This event will involve getting wet and messy; bathing suits, water shoes and towels recommended. Ten Pin Alley is looking forward to teaching your child the basics of bowling and having tons of fun. Camp price includes shoe rental, use of a house ball, and two games per session. Parks and Recreation is teaming up with Raisin Valley Golf Course again this year to offer a golf camp for boys and girls ages 8-14. This three week camp meets on Tuesdays and Thursday at Raisin Valley Golf Course from 1:00 PM until 2:30 PM. Golf Camp will foster a love of the game while focusing on proper hitting techniques and form for your young Michelle Wie or Phil Mickelson. Players are asked to bring their own clubs, however, rentals are available. P a g e 7 Summer Gym Games Step away from the Xbox and put the Wii down! Instead, head on over to the AJ Smith Recreation Center for some good old fashioned organized gym games. This new summer program is the perfect opportunity for boys and girls ages 7-12 to burn off some energy and have a blast as everyone s favorite Recreation Programmer, Kyle Braunschneider, organizes sessions of kickball, dodge ball, capture the flag, spike ball, and much more. Who: Boys and Girls ages 7-12 Location: AJ Smith Recreation Center Date and Time: July 7, 14, 21, 28 @ 2:30-4:00 PM Cost: $15 for all four sessions or $5 to drop-in Basketball Camp Boys and girls are invited to join us at the AJ Smith Recreation Center for a fun filled basketball experience! Campers will focus on the basics for basketball: shooting, passing, dribbling, and defensive technique. Our energetic staff promises to not only create a fun filled atmosphere, but we will strive to make each camper s experience positive and educational. P a g e 8 Skateboard Competition Kickflip the summer off with a skateboarding competition TPR style! Our summer skateboarding competition is a jam session format. Jam sessions will have two age brackets ages 11-16 and 17 and up. This competition gives you the opportunity to showcase your skateboarding skills on Saturday June 27 at Satterthwaite Park. Awards will be presented to the top three skaters in each age bracket. Grab your board and get ready to represent your style! Call us at 517-423-5602 with questions. Canoe and Kayak Races Ready! Set! Row! Bring the whole family and join TPR and the Tecumseh Paddling Company for our annual Canoe and Kayak Races on June 20. Races will consist of doubles in canoes, and both singles and doubles in kayaks. The fun begins at 10 AM and we have heats designed for children, adults, and families. What better way to enjoy the summer heat than being out on the water at Globe Mill Pond.
