Volume 16, Issue 10 November 2008 Yamaha Awards GRANT of $10,000.00 to North Country ATV Association New York Trail Riders Organization, Inc. NYTRO OHV News PRESS RELEASE North Country ATV Association / NYTRO of Eastern NY 518-857-2874 Yamaha Awards GRANT of $10,000.00 to North Country ATV Association Donation Supports Membership Drive & Property Expansion as a part of ongoing effort to encourage safe, responsible riding and sustainable, open riding areas in Saratoga County. Greenfield Center, NY November 3, 2008 North Country ATV Association is pleased to announce it has received a Yamaha OHV Access Initiative GRANT of $10,000 for trail development, property expansion, and to increase rider satisfaction. The GRANT was awarded as part of Yamaha's OHV Access Initiative promoting safe, responsible riding and open, sustainable riding areas. The GRANT (Guaranteeing Responsible Access to our Nations Trails) will be used to purchase signs for club trails, trail maintenance items such as bridges and culverts, and to help pay the club's annual lease. The expectation is to have an ATV trail system much like the state funded snowmobile trail system. All of these improvements should provide a positive rider experience that promotes membership renewals as well as attracting new members to our club and the sport says Bill Below, Trail Coordinator for NCATVA. Moak Detraglia, long-time President of NCATVA states, We are very excited and pleased to be given this opportunity from Yamaha. Our ambition is to provide a legal area for off-road enthusiasts to enjoy the sport and this funding will allow us to improve our trail system. We look forward to serving our current membership as well as new members. We have received support from local dealers in the past and now with the corporate sponsorship, we anticipate great things for our club. North County ATV leases 1506 acres in northern Saratoga County. The property is open to club members to legally ride their ATV's, Side by Sides (UTV's), and dirt bikes. There are currently 13+ miles of trails that range from novice dirt roads to twisting technical trails. The club's goal is to grow to over 125 members and to have 20 miles of signed, mapped trails by September, 2009. North Country ATV Association is a member of the New York State Off- Highway Recreation Vehicle Association Inc., and the New York State Trail Riders Organization Inc. We have been talking to Denny s Restaurant they have agreed to let us hold our meeting there. If we all agree we will try January s meeting there and see how it goes. At that meeting we will vote on staying at friendly or moving to Denny s. You will receive an email in late December to let you know where the meeting will be. We are working with F/P on a new parking area off of Ormbee Rd. This will be a spring project. If you see a logging trail that would make a good trail, drop Bill a note and he will check it out. Bill will be purchasing a GPS program that will work well with the map program that finch uses to try and keep are trail maps with the GPS of our coordinates. Mike will have the club chain saw service and Bill will be purchasing a Case for it. Mike will be checking into a new checking account, one that does not charge a fee and is closer to his house. Work Party November 4, 2008 WORK PARTY -- SATURDAY NOVEMBER 15 The club has received (2) 18"x 10' culverts that we need to install ASAP in order to keep the trail open between #15 and 15A. These culverts will be used in the 2 trenches that were cut across the trail to keep the brooks flowing. We will need to do the following to get this accomplished: 1. Going South from #15, the trail will need to be cleared good enough to tow the culverts down to the trenches. This is a bad section of trail that is full of logs and sticks. It needs a lot of attention. BUT, since we will be short on time we need to express clear this section. 2. We need to install the first culvert, back fill over it with sticks, logs and dirt. 3. After Culvert #1 is done, we can drag the second culvert over it, and travel south to trench # 2, where culvert #2 will be installed. 4. If time allows, I would like to clear that section of trail between between #15 and the new culverts... this section needs some tender loving care. I would like everyone who can help meet at Trail Marker #15. We can drive right in there with our trucks via the "North" (Ormsbee rd)entrance to our property. So we do not disturb the hunters, I would like to meet at 9:30 with a start time of 10:00. If someone has a 'mini' dozer or some kind of earth moving machinery please let me or Moak know. Moak is getting permission from Finch Paper for us to use machinery if we can find it. If not, we will need a bunch of shovels, pick axes, etc. etc. Also will need people to drag logs and sticks from the woods to fill in around the culverts. If you can help out please let me know so we can get a headcount. Email or phone will work. * * * * * Remember to stay on the trail and respect the land and the landowner! Chapter News NYTRO Northern NY Club Officers President-Mike Bellinger e-mail: nytroofnny@yahoo.com phone: (315) 232-2076 * * * * * * * * * * NEWS FROM THE NORTH What a crazy year for weather! Our 16 inches of snow is just about completely melted away. Did get the snow sled out and made a couple passes out back. Tug hill had 28 inches in some spots. We hit 70 degrees yesterday, the 6th, and forecast for rain all weekend what s new with snow possible for Monday. They say we are in the same weather pattern we had for the Blizzard of 77. Took a family personal day so on the way back from Syracuse decided to take a ride thru the Winona Forest which is South of Lorraine where I live. Roads where a little muddy, but what I found is more widespread storm damage. The wet snow we had gotten had built up on the trees, many of them had leaves on. It reminded me of a past ice storm. Trees pulled over and limbs dangling everywhere. We have spent more time cutting damaged trees this year just keeping open up single lanes in places, than we have done over the last few years. Will don the rain gear and head for our trails this weekend to see how bad the deeper woodland trails got hit. Need one of those big 4WD power line cutters to plow thru with. Politics and elections sadly did not go in favor of the true ATV supporters so we will see how things go over the winter. Funding is going to be cut in a major way throughout NY State just to have basic services. Both governmental and family budgets will see some drastic changes so I am hopping that we will at least be able to hang on as Clubs & open up the established trails first and as the financial income provides, expand off of that. On a brighter note, the two remaining active Clubs in Jefferson County, Black River & NYTRO NNY have merged and joined forces with the Lewis County Association. We have always had a good rapport within the two counties and look forward to benefiting from the progress they have been able to make for all the area recreational users. Love my new big chainsaw but after walking and cutting a new three-mile trail with Lewis County crew realize why they carry the compact units. Live and learn. Once we are locked into the spring trail system my next project for the club along with membership is going after some grant money. Yamaha has been helping the state and will ask for some funds to purchase a 4WD club car for trail and assist the local emergency crews in woodland rescue and offroad emergency calls. After getting the 2WD club tractor stuck four times, will also look at upgrading to a bigger 4WD unit along with a material transport device like a dump trailer. So need to monitor the economy and be realistic to the needs of the area. Until then, Ride Safe and we will see you on the Trails. Thank You, Michael Bellinger President/Membership Coordinator/Trail Manager NYTRO North Volume 16, Issue 10 Page 6
