Newsletter of Jebsen & Jessen Group of Companies South East Asia HIGHLIGHTS october 2012 Volume 04/2012 MICA (P) No. 125/05/2012 PPS 1658/09/2009 (028106) 01/ First Carbon Neutral Industrial Company in Asia 02/ Bone Densitometer for Thailand s Top Military Hospital 06/ Jebsen & Jessen Offshore is Born 08/ Fond Farewell to Khen Jee About the Masthead The Mackerel masthead subtly combines graphic images of the compass, sky and vast ocean to symbolise our sea-faring tradition and growth to become a leading distribution, manufacturing and engineering group in South East Asia. The ripples reflect the expanding and international character of our organisation and the communication function of this newsletter. 02/ 06/ 08/features 08/global reach Jul 2012 By offsetting our carbon footprint for 2011 we became one of the first, if not the first, Asian industrial companies to go carbon neutral. The culmination of many years work, the Group was proud to pass this historic milestone in our sustainability journey. Getting to Zero The idea of reducing our net emissions to zero was first mooted in 2007. We had achieved reasonably solid performance standards in terms of our EHS management system but wanted to move beyond mere compliance and do our part in addressing the larger contemporary environmental issue of global climate change. The first challenge was to measure the carbon footprint of our entire Group s activities. The gtool app was developed in-house to collect data on all emissions from purchased fuels, electricity and all travel related activities, and convert into carbon equivalents - following the UN Greenhouse Gas Protocol. At the same time we engaged a Carbon Neutrality Executive for 18 months to assess the many opportunities for reducing our emissions in-house. Several initiatives, mainly in the area of energy efficiency, were implemented. Having exhausted all cost-effective possibilities of reducing our footprint, we needed to find a carbon offsetting partner to offset the remaining emissions. Sister company Jebsen & Co joined us in partnering with Climate Friendly who offered competitive rates and investment projects within our region. We completed the process of purchasing 47,000 tonnes of carbon offset in July and signed a three-year contract, whilst Jebsen & Co, which has a distribution focused business, also offset its 6,000 tonnes of emissions. Investing in the Region s Carbon Reduction The carbon credits we purchase to offset our emissions are invested in two projects. In Thailand, the Siam Cement Biomass Project is reducing the 10/people 12/INNOVATION Jebsen & Jessen (SEA): First Carbon Neutral Industrial Company in Asia Together with sister company Jebsen & Co, Group offset a total 53,000 tonnes of emissions use of fossil fuel in the cement industry. In China, the Chongli Qingsanying Wind Farm reduces dependence on fossil fuel as a source of energy. Collectively these projects reduce the amount of carbon emissions in the atmosphere, offsetting our contribution to climate change. Reduce, Measure and Offset Carbon offsetting forms only part of the sustainability drive within the Group. Alongside this project, our various in-house initiatives have helped us continue to reduce our footprint. In 2011, offices across the region converted to LED lighting. In April 2012, the solar panels at MHE-Demag Singapore began providing up to 20% of its facility s energy requirements. In to the future we look forward to continuing to reduce, measure and offset making our contribution to the ongoing global effort in response to climate change.

2 3 Lapp Solar Powers Up Rural Malaysia JJ-Lapp Cable wins RM500,000 project to supply 45km of cables By Vanessa Loh, Singapore ÖLFLEX SOLAR XLS and ÖLFLEX SOLAR XLSv are a robust range of solar cables with large conductor cross sections. Bone Densitometer for Thailand s Top Military Hospital Jebsen & Jessen Technology installs GE Bone Densitometer DPX NT and software for Bangkok Naval Hospital By Sophin Mahattanan, Thailand Jul 2012 Jebsen & Jessen Technology Thailand - Healthcare received the order for the Bone Densitometer after the customer attended its seminar on DEXA Technology & Applications. The Bone Densitometer provides comprehensive analysis and diagnoses of osteoporosis and fracture risks. Installed together with encore software applications, within the first month of operation more than 20 patients were diagnosed using this advanced technology. Mr Charoensak Techapiwatpun, Managing Director of Jebsen & Jessen Technology Thailand, was a guest at the hand-over ceremony at Bangkok Naval Hospital one of the top military hospitals in Thailand. To date, 58 major hospitals in Thailand are equipped with GE s total body assessment Bone Densitometers. Mr Worapol Jindasri, Sales Executive at Jebsen & Jessen Technology, said, There are already plans to install the product at the Faculty of Associated Medical Science, Chiang Mai University, and Bangpo Hospital by the end of this year. Aug 2012 JJ-Lapp Cable Malaysia will supply RM500,000 of Lapp solar cables to a local contractor from the renewable energy industry. The Lapp ÖLFLEX SOLAR XLS and ÖLFLEX SOLAR XLSv cables, with a total length of 45km, will be installed within a solar farm that generates renewable energy using photovoltaic technology. The generation of renewable energy, such as solar, is a growing industry in South East Asia. Proximity to the equator enables states like Malaysia to develop a rich energy source from solar power. In the rural areas of East Malaysia where other energy sources are commercially not viable, solar provides a long awaited solution. Mr Liew Fook Sin, General Manager of JJ-Lapp Cable Malaysia, shared the company s wider strategy. We are very positive about the solar market outlook in Malaysia. In line with government initiatives to promote sustainable energy, there is a target of 67.63MW solar capacity in total for 2013. To stay ahead of the competition, we are developing a partnership with Phoenix Contact so that we can move in to total solutions - such as PV monitoring system and DC combiner boxes - by bundling Lapp and Phoenix Contact products. We look forward to growing the solar business in Malaysia and across the region. The grand hand-over ceremony at Bangkok s naval base where Thailand s Privy Councillor, General Surayud Chulanont, and Chief of the Naval Forces, Admiral Surasak Runruengrom, were guests of honour. New Irrigation System at Phnom Penh Airport Turf & Irrigation wins contract to design and supply system By Michael Chang, Singapore The Turf & Irrigation team surveys the site of the new weather station for the irrigation system at Phnom Penh Airport. Jul 2012 Jebsen & Jessen Technology Turf & Irrigation, in cooperation with business partner Armstrong Engineering, has won the contract to design and supply a fully automatic irrigation system for the Phnom Penh International Airport, Cambodia. With the country s role as chair nation of ASEAN 2012, the Cambodian government is keen to improve the image of the airport. The new irrigation will ensure international guests enjoy a pleasant, green landscape around the runway and the airport grounds. Armstrong Engineering, lead contractor, was awarded the project in June with a challenging four-month deadline. The Turf & Irrigation team will design and supply the system for Armstrong Engineering, including TORO decoder sprinklers and a Lynx central control system. Irrigation will be automatically cut off when a preset amount of rainfall is detected by the weather station that is integrated into the Lynx system. Due to the nature of the project site, security is the number one concern. Design, product, personnel, equipment and installation methods went through a stringent approval process before work could start. The installation was carried out after midnight, when the airport ceases operations for the day. To add to the challenges, the timings coincided with Cambodia s rainy season. The experienced team rose to the challenge and was on schedule to complete the work in time for the next round of ASEAN meetings later this year. Largest Pump System to Date Designed and Installed Jebsen & Jessen Technology supplies powerful system to The Office of Royal Development Projects Board By Sophin Mahattanan, Thailand Jul 2012 Jebsen & Jessen Technology Thailand designed and installed a powerful pumping system for an electrical pump station in Nakhon Si Thammarat province, Southern Thailand. The pump station is a project initiated by The Office of the Royal Development Projects Board to improve local agriculture irrigation systems. The Electra Split Case Centrifugal Pump Set was specially designed to ensure sufficient water supply reaches the local population of 1017 households during drought season. We ve been distributing and designing Electra pumps for more than 12 years, this Electra LS 350/24 Pump Set is by far the highest capacity set we ve designed and installed. The high liquid transfer rate of 1080m 3 /hr, with total head at 25m, runs on less power than other pumps on the market, shares Mr Anantasak Sukmanee, Sales Manager at Jebsen & Jessen Technology. The Director General of the Royal Irrigation Department, Mr Lertwiroj Kowattana, said, The pump station can provide water to over 6273 acres of land; locals will now have enough water to maintain their agricultural activities all year round. Electra pumps supplying water for household and agriculture use in South Thailand. This pump type can also be used in other applications such as cooling systems, irrigation, fire protection and pressure boosters.

12 INNOVATION MHE-Demag: New Fleet Management System New technology helps increase safety on the roads and improves efficiency of customer service By Christian-André Schultz, Malaysia Jul 2012 Contrary to popular belief, it is not the factory that is the most dangerous place at work, it s the road. With up to 40% of accidents in the workplace happening on the roads, MHE-Demag invested in the latest technology to support safer driving and boost its fleet s efficiency at the same time. The new system has already delivered results for both safety and customer service. Customised System Developed In-house All MHE-Demag s 180 service and installation vehicles have been equipped with GPS that sends data on the vehicle s position and speed to the fleet management system, via the company s server. With the user-friendly web interface, administrators and management can then access and use the data collected to inform a range of decisions and customer services practices. The fleet management system software was developed by the IT team at the Group s Central Services Unit to meet MHE-Demag s specific set of requirements. Using Data to Support Safety and Service Driving speed and traffic flow information are then used to monitor and maintain safety. The system can show the administrator how long a driver has been on the road, enabling them to respond to the risk of fatigue. Driving patterns data can support the long term analysis of accident causes. System administrator collecting data to identify the most strategic location for a new service centre therefore minimising potential driving time - decreasing customer waiting times and emissions from fuel. In addition to safety, the data enables the company to become even more responsive to customers. The administrator can see which service van is currently closest to a particular location and choose the smartest route for the driver. The data can also be used to keep the customer updated on expected arrival times. Data on underutilised time can be used to plan more efficient customer support procedures. The customised software enables the company to create a dashboard of information that suits its needs. In the long run, data from the system can be used to guide strategic decisions such as the location of service centres and the most efficient size and scale of the fleet itself. Impact in Evidence Already All MHE-Demag s 180 service and installation vehicles have been equipped with GPS. Despite a dramatic increase in business we have already seen an indicative fall in accident rates, which dropped 30% last quarter. After only a few months it s clear that as well as making a difference to safety, customers are seeing improvement in the operations of service, installation and delivery. We look forward to seeing the continued positive impact on our customers and our staff.
