One of the favorite pastimes in India is kite flying. In fact, there is a huge festival held each year in January in Ahmenabad, India. Prepare a three-part presentation on kites that includes: 1. The history of kites and kite flying. (Which countries have a long history of kite flying? Any kite holidays?) 2. How do kites fly? (What materials work best to build kites? What are the key parts to all kites? And if you have time, build your own kite!) 3. Demonstrate how to fly a kite. (Are there any particular weather conditions that are necessary? What tips do you have for someone who is having trouble?) Memorize a poem by Kalidasa, or select a portion of The Cloud Messenger to memorize. Gain confidence in public speaking by reciting your selection in front of a group of people (either your peers or adults). (keyword Kalidasa ) Read the version of the poem The Cloud Messenger on our website link (keywords Cloud Messenger ) with your mom or dad: Then complete the following: 1. Rewrite the poem as a story in your own words. 2. Could this poem have been written in another country or in another time? Why or why not? 3. Do you like this poem? Why or why not? 4. What surprised you about this poem? Mom or Dad: work through the meaning of difficult words with your children and discuss what you think the poem might mean as you go. Pretend you are spending a week (seven days) on a trip to India. Create a travel album of your trip. Your album should include: 1. Entries for the seven days you are actually in India. (If you d like to include stories and mishaps about traveling to and from, you should include this information in two extra days one before and one after your seven days in the country!) 2. Information about places you visited, where you stayed, people you met, what you did, and, to go the extra mile, some special foods you ate! 3. An illustration from each day in the country your journal should be colorful! 4. Also, implied in your album should be an understanding of why you went to India. Were you on a missions trip? Were you visiting someone? Was there a special activity or event you went to participate in? (For an example of this, see keyword Kites.) 5. A map of the country showing your travel route. Write a mini-report on one Indus Valley civilization. (Example: The Harappan Civilization.) Your report should include: 1. A brief description of how these people lived. What did they survive on? How did they interact with others? Art? 2. What kinds of technology did they have? How did they manipulate their environment to meet their needs? 3. Theories as to why this civilization went away. Research at least 10 holidays that are celebrated in India, and create a calendar marking each one. Your calender should explain the celebration as well as activities and traditions that are typical for each holiday. To go the extra mile, celebrate one of these holidays by inviting friends to your house and introducing them to some of the Indian traditions you have learned about. Choose Your Adventure continued Make an Indian dish! Practice searching online for an Indian recipe to try. Searching tips: Find free recipe websites by searching for free recipes or free online recipes in any search engine. Once you have found a recipe site, look up India or perhaps search for the name of a particular dish you ve studied. Some sites will even help you search by organizing their collections by world regions. To keep in mind when you choose a recipe: Are all of the required ingredients easily accessible? Does your family have all of the cookware necessary for making this dish? Watch a Bollywood film. Talk through the features of the film. Geography: Two famous peaks located here Name of the important river that flows through the region. What happened between 1947 and 1949 that has resulted in conflict in this region ever since? What is the Line of Control? Who controls this region now? Would you say this issue has been resolved? Why or why not? Study the various articles of Indian clothing discussed in this article and in other sources. Design several outfits based on the Indian style of dress created from various materials. (For example, you may use fabric, but don t feel limited to using only fabric!) Then, host a fashion show with an announcer who explains the various articles of clothing as they are being modeled to an audience. Is the time required to make this dish acceptable to you and anyone you may ask to help you? Create a Fact Card for the region of Kashmir.

We read at dinner time about three times a week and discussed then prayed as a family. We each picked an item to pray about which we found interesting. We sometimes prayed around the table and other times one person led in prayer. It has been very meaningful!!!
