ESB Entry Three Reading (Part One) You are going to read a text about young people and the news. For paragraphs 21-24, match the headings below (A - G) with the paragraphs. There are TWO headings which you do not need. The first heading has been done as an example. Young People Do Not Read The News Example: Adults are more interested in news than teenagers are. Most adults are interested in world news and like to read about it in newspapers or watch at least one news programme on television every day. However, this may not be the same for young people who often show little interest in what is happening in the world around them. 21. Research in the United States found that many American teenagers were unaware of world events, such as war and politics. Researchers interviewed 1,800 young people between the ages of twelve and seventeen and discovered that 60% of them paid little attention to world news. Those between the ages of eighteen and thirty also did not show much interest in what was happening in the world. 48% of this age group said they hardly ever read or listened to the news. When using the internet, young people can easily become distracted by playing games or looking at social networking sites, such as Facebook, rather than reading the news. In general, stories about celebrities often attract young people more than political news stories. ESB Entry Three Reading (Part Two) You are going to read a text about the Icehotel in Sweden. For questions 31 35, choose the correct answer A, B, C or D. Icehotel Many people enjoy holidaying in a warm climate and staying in a comfortable hotel with a swimming pool. However, there are some people who would rather stay somewhere unusual, even in a hotel made of ice. The world s first ice hotel was built in the small village of Jukkasjärvi in Sweden. Only about 1,000 people live in the village which is situated on the Torne River. The Sami people were the first to live in Jukkasjärvi, which now has a mixture of Sami, Finnish and Swedish cultures and traditions. The Icehotel is rebuilt every year by a team of architects, snow builders and designers. The work starts when the River Torne freezes and the ice is used to build the hotel, usually in the middle of November. Building is completed in several stages. As one part of the hotel is finished, it is opened to visitors and overnight guests, while the other parts are still being built. This year, the Icehotel will have 60 guest rooms for visitors to sleep in, but the number may be different each year. The Icehotel has many unusual facilities, such as a bar made of ice serving alcoholic drinks in glasses made of ice. The hotel also has an ice church which is built by 23 rd December each year. Couples can arrange to marry any time between that date and April, as the church melts in the springtime along with the rest of the hotel. Visitors who would like to get married in the summer can marry at Jukkasjärvi s 400-year-old church instead. The hotel offers several different types of accommodation. Most people stay one cold night in the Icehotel and several warm nights in a nearby hotel. Inside the Icehotel, the temperature is between -5 and -8 Centigrade. Visitors sleep in a sleeping bag on an ice bed and have to wear a hat and gloves during the night. Guest rooms are decorated with fantastic ice sculptures and many artists compete each year to display their work. In Sweden each year, there are 100 days of sunshine without any night time at all. This year, another version of the Icehotel is being built which is much smaller than the winter one. Many summer visitors to Jukkasjärvi have said they would like to experience the cold Icehotel during the warm summer, which is the reason it is being built. To stop it from melting, the hotel will be surrounded by several thousand tonnes of giant blocks of ice. Instead of winter sports, summer visitors will be able to go canoeing, hunting, fishing or take part in other activities under the midnight sun.
