Overview Service Project and Overnight Adventure at Angel Island State Park. Scouts and parents will participate in a four hour service project and other activities (hikes, museum visits, campfire program without fire, etc.), as well as spend the night on Angel Island State Park in the San Francisco Bay. We will also be treating this campout as an Introduction to Backpacking campout Summary Plan Resources Meet at Redwood Shores Elementary on Sat May 20 7:45 AM and return to RWSE on Sun May 21 2:00 PM or 3:00 PM Approximate Cost $30 $35 per person (includes transportation, parking, ferry ticket, some meals) Pending Bring daypack (10 Essentials, sack lunch, water, and work gloves) and backpack (overnight gear). Pack light possible hike 1.5 miles with gear to/from service campsite on Angel Island Four Hour Service Project on Saturday (can be used for rank requirement) Additional Activities: Saturday (Campfire Program) and Sunday (Short Hike or Hike to the Peak, Museum Visit) Maximum 40 people can attend Need drivers. Cost Troop 61 Angel Island Service Project & Overnight Campout Approximately $30 35.00 per person (covers transportation to/from RWS Elementary, parking, ferry ticket, some meals) Designated Drivers will be reimbursed $42.00 (mileage, toll, and parking) to drive participants Additional Notes: Meals Service Project Typical service project could be culvert cleaning, trail work, loping/pruning, stacking firewood, trash cleanup, gardening, housekeeping it just depends on what the most urgent need on the island is at the time of our arrival. Service Log No need to bring service log sheet as ASM Jay will keep track. Scout should bring their scout book for sign off by scout leaders. Participants should consider one hour drive (car sickness), 15 minute ferry ride (sea sickness) and hiking over a mile. o Lunch Bring a sack lunch in your day pack o Dinner Bring a dehydrated meal. You can pick up a Mountain House Brand or comparable readymade meal online or through REI. We will provide hot water and possible hot chocolate after dinner Sunday o Backpacking Breakfast For example hot cereal, hot chocolate, fruit, nuts, dry fruit, etc o Backpacking Lunch - For example granola bars, fruit, jerky, summer sausages, string cheese, etc Detail Schedule Saturday, May 20, 2017 7:45 AM Arrive at RWS Elementary Gear Clothing: Uniform Class A (travel) with Class B T Shirt (work) under the shirt. If you don t have a Troop 61 Class B shirt, please wear any scouting appropriate T Shirt. Bring jacket and dress in layers as weather can be unpredictable PACK LIGHT (Try to bring one backpack (with day pack stuffed inside) if possible o Day Pack 10 Essentials (http://rwstroop61.org/2011/01/reference/) to include sunscreen, min 32oz water, sack lunch, hat, and work gloves o Backpack/Overnight Gear See details below Troop Gear: Each scout will be required to carry some troop gear For example, tents, so pack light. Note: The campsite is a hike in site (about 1.5 miles from the dock). Possible vehicle assistance, but not guaranteed. 9:30 AM Arrive at Tiburon Ferry Terminal & Park Car Parking Offload the scouts and gear on Tiburon Blvd near terminal Designated drivers park in Lot C (next to Bank of America) Pay upon entering: Valid until NOON the next day. Use envelope/deposit in the box. Enforced daily and in evenings! You must pay daily upon entering, or your vehicle will be ticketed. Use the ticket parking machine and leave ticket in vehicle dash OR take the envelope from the box, fill out, enclose fee, and drop into the slot of receipt box. PURCHASE for Two Days: $10 ($5 per day) as we will be back around 2PM on Sunday 9:45 AM Preparation for Boarding with Angel Island Tiburon Ferry Each person has to have a ticket ($12 per person) Jay will distribute the tickets and included in the cost above Daypack 10 essentials, sack lunch, water, work gloves will bring to service project Backpack Overnight gear will bring to service campsite Troop gear will bring to service campsite 10:00 AM Take Ferry to Angel Island 10:15 AM Arrive at Angel Island Meet with Maintenance Coordinator and receive service project site and instructions Overnight & Troop Gear The campsite is a hike in site (about 1.5 miles from the dock). Possible vehicle assistance, but not guaranteed. Separate Gear between 12:20 PM and 1:20 PM Departure 8:00 AM Morning Activities Two Options Hike to the Peak (About 3 4 Hours) The peak of Mt. Livermore is 788 feet tall and has views that span all of the island and bay areas from its top. The name of the peak comes from Caroline Livermore, a conservationist whose efforts in protecting the island led to Angel Island becoming a state park enjoyed by tens of thousands of visitors every year. Great panoramic views of the bay. Possible geocaching on trial. YPT enforced with at least two adults and balance ratio of scouts to adults Moderate Level Hike Starting at sea level then climbing to the peak (788 feet). Miles: ~4.5 5.0 miles from service campsite & approximately 800 feet elevation Trail: Northridge Trail Bring ten essentials, water and headlamp/flashlight Partial Hike to the Peak (About 1 2 hour) Hike with the Hike to the Peak Group, but halfway up, enjoy the view of the Bay and then turn around and head back YPT enforced with at least two adults and balance ratio of scouts to adults Short Hike to Museum @ Fort McDowell & Historic Buildings (About 1 hour) If you walk to Ft McDowell, down the hill from your campsite, volunteers will have opened the museum which is free to visit. Neat historic buildings there as well. YPT enforced with at least two adults and balance ratio of scouts to adults Short Hike to US Immigration Station Museum (About 1 hour) The Immigration Station Museum is open for visitation for $5/adults and $3/youth, but no tours.
