Radnor Township Recreation and Community Programming Department Radnor Day Camp Week 1: June 27 - July 1, 2016 Dear Parents, Welcome to Camp! The Radnor Recreation and Community Programming Department, Camp Leaders and I are excited to welcome you to camp this summer. This is a special year in Radnor Day Camp history because we are celebrating the 75th year of summer camp. In addition to our many standard camp events, we have numerous activities planned to commemorate this historic year. Campers successfully transitioned into the Radnor Day Camp (RDC) this week. We have reviewed our summer calendar and everyone is excited for the Wacky Wednesdays, 75th Birthday Celebrations, Camp Olympics, Art Show and Performing Arts Show. Everyone is adjusting quickly to camp schedules and activities. Thank you for your patience as we improve our dismissal plans. We look forward to a fun and safe summer at Radnor Day Camp! Swimming WELCOME TO RDC!!!! I'm so happy to be back at camp again for the 6th year! I love seeing the campers that are returning and how big they have gotten! This week over at the pool we went over some of the basic rules & each camper completed a small swim test. This allowed the pool staff to determine their individual swim level. Next week, we'll start some basic swim lessons, such as breathing & streamlining. I encourage you all to get your child swim lessons, if possible, so that along with what we are doing, he or she will become stronger in the water. Please remember to send in a good set of Speedo Swim goggles for the kids to learn their breathing in the water, since we still have some that have not brought them in. You will find next week s schedule on page 6. I also would like to let you know that the USA Olympic Swim Trials are on NBC. If you get a chance, have your camper check it out so they can see some high level swim skills! Happy 4th of July!! Mary Beth Ryan ~ Aquatics Director Specialty Directors Spotlight Performing Arts Welcome back everyone! We are gearing up for another awesome summer in Performing Arts at Radnor Day Camp. This week in Performing Arts, we are introducing ourselves with movement. There has been a lot of dancing and a lot of creativity buzzing. We are testing out all of our dance moves so that we can be in full force when we start working on the camp performance. All of the campers are excited for the announcement of this year's show theme on Friday! Next week, we will be getting into character as all of the campers choose their group roles for the annual camp performance!! Meghann Weaver Spirit and Events We really enjoyed our first week of camp in Spirit and Events. The theme this week was Aloha Summer to welcome all of our campers back to RDC. The kids have had a fun-filled week participating in team building activities, art projects, and games! Wacky Wednesday was a big hit with all the campers. We have other fun filled Wednesdays planned to coordinate with each week s theme. Next week I am requesting each camper bring in an empty disposable water bottle (16 oz preferred) by Wednesday. Everyone is looking forward to celebrating the 75th anniversary of RDC. It s a monumental summer to have your kids enrolled at Radnor Day Camp! Molly Toomey Please bring empty water bottles by Wednesday!
Sports and Games Hello RDC! My name is Lewis Ellis and I am the Sports and Games Coordinator at Radnor Day Camp. So far, all of the campers have a blast playing games such as Get the Chicken, Sharks and Minnows, Tennis Racket Baseball and the all-time favorite for the older campers, Prisonball. Next week, games will focus more on teamwork, collaboration and plenty of running. I ask that your campers have a water bottle, sneakers (NO crocs, flip-flops, sandals, etc.), have applied sunscreen prior to camp (can bring to camp for applying throughout the day) and a great attitude! Week 1 was great! Week 2 will be even better! Creative Crafts Hi! Welcome to all you camper families new to camp and welcome back to returning families. Campers collaged their art portfolio folders this week using pictures of animals, designer washi tape and drawings. We focus on self-expression in the art room. It is a treat to get to know your delightful children through their artwork. We have covered the walls with colorful window art made with shaved crayons and wax paper. If your camper hasn't brought a piece home yet they will bring it home soon. Meanwhile, a (very good) friend has generously donated many hours to cut and sew over two hundred cloth puppets for our puppet project. I hope to inspire the kids to build on this cloth base to imagine and create wild characters of their choosing. Each camper group will also collaborate to design and paint a theater for their puppets. We will be busy this summer exploring art materials and developing confident young artists. Meredith Mustard
