Ghosts & Wi With Britisl Thursday 22 October - Departure This morning we depart from our local pick up points and head north towards Accrington. On arrival in Accrington, we check in at the Dunkenhalgh Hotel, where we will be based for the next four nights. After check in, we will enjoy a welcome drink of tea or coffee before relaxing ahead of dinner this evening at the hotel. Friday 23 October - Guided tour of the Ribble Valley After breakfast this morning we have the opportunity for a short guided tour of the hotel to learn about its 700 year history and listen to the tales of the sightings of the Ghosts of Dunkenhaigh. Th hot j ic r p rt ej be. haunted by a ghost or a boggart appearing as a young French lady dressed in a winding sheet, known as Lucette. After our tour of the hotel, our theme continues with a guided tour of the Ribble Valley with ghost walks and visits to six ancient haunted inns in award winning villages. All these famous inns have stories of heroes, villains and of course ghosts which date back to the 1740's. We will also have opportunity for lunch at the Calf's Head, an old hunting lodge in Worston. Later this evening we also have the chance to embark on a guided ghost walk in the nearby village of Whalley, where we will hear the stories of the ghostly highwayman Ned King. Saturday 24 October - Pendle Witches After breakfast we depart the hotel as we explore the 'Pendle Witches' country with a guide. In 1612 ten people were executed on the moors around Lancaster, having been found guilty of witchcraft at Lancaster Castle. The evidence given against the so called 'Pendle Witches' was based on rumours, hearsay and superstition and would not be considered as evidence in a modern court. However, over 400 years ago, life was very different and religious persecution was rife with people living in wretched fear and poverty. Over 400 years later we have the opportunity to follow the journey taken by the accused witches, from the untamed moorlands of Pendle Hi!) to the mjghty G9yrt Of Lancaster, to learn about their lives and the trial that maae British history. After our tour we visit Salmesbury Hall, a beautiful, half timbered medieval house with a turbulent and dramatic history, renowned as one of the most haunted buildings in Britain. The Hall is over 700 years old and resident spirits include the legendary White Lady, Dorothy Southworth, who died of a broken heart and has been seen on many occasions. Salmesbury Hall also gives us an insight into life at one of Lancashire's historic homes, with centuries of fascinating history throughout the archive rooms which detail Lancashire's dramatic and historic past. After our visit we return to the hotel for dinner. Sunday 25 October - Leeds-Liverpool Canal, Skipton & Grassington After breakfast this morning we travel north for a visit to Skipton and a cruise on the Liverpool-Leeds Canal. The canal connects the two cosmopolitan cities of Leeds and Liverpool together and is the longest canal in Britain built as a single waterway. Leaving Liverpool the canal passes through East Lancashire, crossing the Pennines passing through rugged countryside and picturesque villages on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales before reaching Leeds and connecting with the Aire and Calder Navigation. The canal is also home to one of Britain's most recognised heritage features, Bingley's five rise locks, boasting the tallest lock gates in the country, which is an 18th-century engineering masterpiece and is still in daily use. Other waterway landmarks include the impressive Burnley Embankment, and Foulridge Tunnel. After our cruise we have some free time in the town of Skipton. Skipton is positioned overlooking the Aire Gap, which separates the Craven limestone dales to the north from the gritstone moors to the south and the pastoral Ribble Valley to the west. Located at the southern boundary to the Yorkshire Dales the town has always been referred to as the "Gateway to the Dales". Skipton's unique appeal lies in its combination of olde-worlde charm and the hustle and bustle of a busy market town which has evolved over the centuries and naturally retained its histnhr. feature Wander down the many alleyways, or 'ginnels', to savour the town's history and Character, and explore the Side Streets where you will find interesting shops cafes and restaurants. After our visit we continue our journey into the Yorkshire Dales for a visit to Grassington, one of Yorkshire's prettiest villages. The charming cobbled square in the centre of the village has numerous tea rooms, hostelries and quaint a shops. The village is located on the River Wharfe surrounded by beautiful open countryside which boasts stunning views and beautiful stone buildings. Take a stroll through the narrow cobbled streets or simply relax by the river. After our visit we return to the hotel for dinner.
