TOWN OF GILLAMS YEAR 2016 SMASH UP DERBY FOR MS Hosted by: Gavin Butt What a great turn out for the 1 st Smash up Derby here in Gillams. While the streets filled with traffic the event turned out to be a great success. With a donation of $10,100.00 for a one day event to the MS society. Thanks to all who helped out in any way possible to help pull off this event. May next year be bigger and better. Hard to believe that this is the same ball field that only a few years ago was nothing only a fallen down fence and grass. Thanks to Gillams Recreation and the dream to get Gillams Ball Field up and running again. With over $18,000.00 in grants for the first time in years the recreation was able to host 2 mixed softball tournaments this summer and this fall hosted the Newfoundland Girls Soft ball provincials. While there is more work to be completed we will keep moving along until completed. Thank you Gillams Recreation Committee for your pride in the community.

CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to Kaitlyn Blanchard, Madison Park & Nicolas Park our student athletes. Kaitlyn & Madison won the Gold at the U16 Female baseball provincials & Nicolas Park got picked to play on the Provincials Newfoundland team who went on to play at the Nationals. Way to go! Congratulations to Gillams Fire Chief, Cecil Kerr on winning Volunteer Fire Chief of year from the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs. This is the first time an award like this has come close to any of the Atlantic Provinces and now it s right here in your community. Congratulations Chief Kerr. Congratulations to Jamie Park on winning Gillams first Chase the Ace. Congratulations to our Town Maintenance Anthony Gauthier who married Kayla Janes on August 13, 2016 at Gillams Beach. Our first beach wedding.

The Town has received approval to begin phase 1 of our new Fire Hall/ Town Hall. This is on a 90/10 cost shared capital grant. The Town has applied for sewage and pavement for certain areas but has been turned down due to low population. Budget for 2017 will be similar to the 2016 budget. There are no change in the mill rate, poll tax, water tax, water & sewer tax, poll tax, & business tax. More information on the budget will be provided on Gillams website www.gillams.net in January of 2017. Snow Clearing for 2017 will be done by Tex s Transport. If you have any snow clearing complaints you can contact Deputy Mayor Eddie Blanchard. Please keep your garbage boxes back far enough on your property to avoid damage. The town has a tree policy in place. Overhanging trees close to the roadway within 25 feet from the center of the road can cause damage to the snowclearing equipment and is a hazard for traffic utilizing the street. This policy can be found on website www.gillams.net. Remember a snowplow cannot be on the road 24 hours a day. Most town s or cities the side roads are not done until night time. The Department of Highways as also made cut backs to the times the plow is on the road. Be courteous to our snowplow contractor. There is a water turn on/off policy. Please give a two day notice in advance to arrange a time. TOWN NEWS The town has purchased another rescue vehicle for the fire department and has made use of the old rescue vehicle for garbage collection. This was many $$$$ of cost savings to the town. Remember there are items that we cannot accept such as tires, shingles, fridges, etc. This is not the town rules its the WRWM rules. We are not allowed to bring these items to the dumping site. The Town of Gillams has not been on a boil order this year. If you see neighboring town s with boil orders does not mean your town is on a boil order. It may have to do with their chlorination. As you all are aware Canada Post has changed from P.O. Box # s to civic address. This was not a decision of council but the Federal Government. If you need volunteer hours contact the town office or the town organizations. Western Regional Waste Management You are required to have a card to dump at the Wild Cove waste disposal site. This card can be picked up at the WRWM office in Corner Brook. For further information phone 632-2922. The town s website can be used for free advertisement or announcements. Remember our town facilities are smoke free.
