Gymnaestrada 2015 Helsinki experiences its best-ever travel year in 2015 The number of overnight stays in Helsinki rose to a new record, almost 3.5 million, in 2015. Helsinki experienced growth of 4.9%, while stays nationwide were largely unchanged (-0.2%) from the previous year. All-time highs were recorded in July, when overnight stays in Helsinki grew 18%, and in December, when 21% more stays were registered than in the previous year. July s major international gymnastics event Gymnaestrada and the ice hockey junior world championships, which started in December, were behind the record numbers. They also contributed to the lengthening of the average duration of stay in Helsinki. Stays by Russian travellers continued to fall. The number of stays by guests from our eastern neighbour reduced 38% in Helsinki, even though they had already fallen 21% in 2014. Germany bypassed Russia to become the largest foreign market area. The nextlargest were UK, Sweden, Japan, USA and China. Stays by domestic visitors to Helsinki were up 3.8%. Nationwide, overnight stays by Finnish visitors increased 1.2%. Both recreational and business travel grew in 2015, with the main emphasis of growth in the leisure travel segment, which once again accounted for more than half of all overnight stays. About 35,200 delegates attended a total of 275 international conferences that were arranged in Helsinki in 2015. Helsinki accounted for just under half (48%) of all conference visits to Finland. International cruise ships brought 437,000 visitors, another new record, to the city. A survey conducted at border crossing points indicates that the Helsinki metropolitan region was the primary travel destination for a total of 4.9 million foreigners arriving in Finland. 13% of them lived in Russia, 52% in other European countries and 28% in Asian countries. 39% of arrivals were day trippers, 34% stayed in a hotel or motel and 16% with friends or relatives. 8% of arrivals stayed in a rental apartment or cottage. Foreign travellers spent about 1.47 billion in the Helsinki region. The travel spend of Chinese visitors exceeded the spend of Russian travellers for the first time. The most money was spent on shopping, advance expenses (e.g. travel packages, pre-booked services), accommodation and restaurants. domestic and foreign bednights in helsinki 2004 2015 4 000 000 3 500 000 3 000 000 2 500 000 2 000 000 1 500 000 1 000 000 500 000 0 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 Domestic Foreign countries 2 Helsinki Tourism in 2015

The number of overnight stays by foreign visitors increased by 102,300 from the previous year. The largest contributions to this growth came from China, Japan, Germany, Switzerland, UK and Canada. The number of stays by Russian travellers decreased by 93,500. Jussi Hellsten Lauri Rotko Jussi Hellsten Helsinki s market share the largest in the long-haul travel segment Helsinki s share of all nationwide overnight stays by international visitors was 33.4%, which is three percentage points higher than in 2014. The share is the highest in the longhaul travel segments, such as in the case of overnight stays by visitors from South Korea (67%), Canada (64%), Japan (62%) and USA (61%). Helsinki s share is the smallest in the Ukrainian, Russian, Estonian and Latvian visitor segments. Length of stay increases somewhat The average duration of stay of overnight visitors to Helsinki was 1.68 nights, a shade higher than the 1.67 nights recorded in 2014. Domestic visitors stayed for an average of 1.48 nights and foreign guests for 1.90 nights. These figures have never been higher. The previous record was set in 2012. The largest growth in stays by foreign visitors was due to major events arranged in Helsinki in July and December. Stays by domestic guests increased the most by volume in July. Helsinki s share of all overnight stays nationwide was 17.5%, which is just under a percentage point higher than one year earlier. The corresponding share of the capital city region was 23.8%, while the entire Uusimaa province received 27.2% of the total. International guests accounted for more than half of all overnight stays Foreign visitors were responsible for 53.2% of all overnight stays in Helsinki, a slightly 4 Helsinki Tourism in 2015 higher share than in 2014. July and August were the busiest months for travel emanating from overseas, with foreigners accounting for 60% of all stays in August. Domestic travellers accounted for 46.8% of all overnight stays in 2015, with July being by far the liveliest month. The share of stays attributable to Finns was at its highest in February, when it exceeded 54%. The share of business travellers was almost unchanged at 48%. The separation of visitors travelling for other purposes was discontinued from the statistics at the halfyear mark. The majority of the growth in recreational travel came from the domestic segment; business travel contracted in this segment, however. Business travel increased more, when measured by volume, than recreational travel in the foreign segment. The total number of stays for leisure purposes was the highest recorded since 2011. The number of stays by business travellers was the highest on record. Slush 2015 Mikael Ahlfors / Keksi egates attended these events. The number of conferences was down 11% and the amount of delegates 13% from 2014. The number of conferences varies from year to year and no exceptionally large conference events happened to take place in 2015. The overall trend is growing, however. A total of 682 international conferences were arranged nationwide, attracting 75,800 delegates. Helsinki s share of all conferences was 40% and 46% of all conference participants. Tourist Information experiences a busy year The Tourist Information service point on Pohjoisesplanadi in the centre of Helsinki was visited by about 243,000 customers during the year, slightly more than in 2014 (+2%). E-mail and telephone advice was provided from the same location. The Central Railway Station information point managed to serve 2,600 customers before the outlet was closed at the end of February 2015. Helsinki Help information officers provided assistance at passenger ports, the city centre area and the Info Container service point, which was relocated to Keskuskatu, during the sum- mer season and once again reached a record number of customers, with a total of 166,000 (+3%) travellers served. Helsinki airport s regional tourist information point served more than 281,000 customers (-7%). The reduction was due to the service point s relocation to a new spot in Terminal 2 and the introduction of a new kind of visitor counting system. Helsinki Tourist Information s total number of customer contacts was almost 725,000 in 2015. Helsinki s official travel information website Visithelsinki.fi reached some 2.4 million unique visitors, about 300,000 more than in 2014. International comparison Helsinki fared better than it did in 2014 in comparison to its nearest Nordic competitor cities. The number of overnight stays increased in all Nordic capitals, with Copenhagen recording 10%, Stockholm 9%, Oslo 6% and Helsinki 5% growth. In 2014, Helsinki only achieved one percent growth, while the other capital cities experienced significantly stronger development. Stockholm and Copenhagen again recorded the highest numbers of overnight stays. Oslo hosted more than half a million more overnight stays than Helsinki.
