MAKE SUMMER MEANINGFUL YMCA CAMP SPAULDING 2018 Overnight Camp Guide

WELCOME

Since 1921, YMCA Camp Spaulding has been a focal point for children and adults to become the person they want to be. The Camp Spaulding Experience is rooted in the desire to take campers and staff from all backgrounds and give them a space to play, learn, and grow together in a caring and supportive, family atmosphere. What makes Overnight Camp such a powerful experience? Well, when a camper attends overnight camp they: Become more independent, learning how to live in a community away from home. Create stronger bonds with peers and adults by being engulfed in a supportive community. Learn life and practical skills that can create life long interests and develop confidence through accomplishment. Whether it is your first summer of your fifteenth, we are excited to have you as part of the Camp Spaulding Family. Campers have come from all over the world to experience a Spaulding Summer. At Spaulding, We Believe That Every Kid Deserves Camp

My girls talk about how much fun they had making up dances and playing capture the flag. They are thrilled to have met new nice friends and they are begging me to send them back to Camp Spaulding. - Camp Parent

SPAULDING HONOR Camp Spaulding is a values driven program. We strive to help every camper who comes to camp learn the importance of living a life focused around a strong moral compass and committing yourself to a code that you can live by. The Camp Spaulding Honor Code is how we define that moral compass at camp: CARING: Looking out for each other HONESTY: Be true to you. Be true to others RESPECT: To be shown to everyone RESPONSIBILITY: Good Stewardship to the world PURPOSE: A reason for everything we do SPIRIT: Uniting new and old in a higher meaning These values are infused into every part of the Camp Spaulding program. Campers will learn how to use these values in their everyday life. Our most basic goal is to help campers become more civically minded to go into the world looking to make it a world they want to live in.

CONFIDENCE THROUGH COMPETENCE The Spaulding Program is based on the belief that a camper can grow and flourish if they are given the ability to succeed. The ability to gain a new skill, overcome a fear, achieve a goal, or refine a skill gives a camper the feeling of accomplishment that can transfer back into their lives outside of camp. Our skills classes and goal setting program allows us to track a campers successes in order to ensure he or she is growing as an individual at camp. Counselors will talk with your camper at the beginning of their time with us to set goals to accomplish and skills to learn. Throughout their time with us, our staff will work alongside your camper to achieve those goals and gain that feeling of accomplishment by the end of the session.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT Throughout the camp experience, campers will be given the ability to find something that they are passionate about within our program offering. Our skill development classes will help campers learn new skills and aid in the creation of life long interests. High and Low Ropes Course Arts and Crafts (Pottery, Drawing, Painting, Sculpting, Photography) Swimming and Boating Outdoor Living Skills Sports (Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, Flag Football, Quidditch, Floor Hockey) Horseback Riding Nature and Ecology Woodworking Performing Art (Music, Theater, Improv, Dance) Cooking Archery Campers will be given the ability to design their experience based on their interests. With the ability to try many different things, passions are discovered every summer by campers at camp.

I became a nicer person and learned how to get along with lots of different types of kids. - Camp Spaulding Camper

DAILY SCHEDULE While there is no such thing as a typical day at camp, we do follow a schedule to give campers an opportunity to experience as much of camp as possible. Schedule is subject to change for special events and theme days. 7:30am Wake Up 8:15am Breakfast 8:50am Cabin Cleanup 9:15am Morning Assembly 9:30am Cabin Activity 10:45am 1st Activity Period 12 noon Lunch 12:45pm Siesta 1:35pm 2nd Activity Period 2:35pm 3rd Activity Period 3:35pm 4th Activity Period 4:25pm Camp Choice 5:45pm Dinner 6:30pm Village Free Time 7:05pm Evening Program 9:15pm Cabin Chat 9:45pm Lights Out

YMCA CAMP SPAULDING STAFF Working at Camp Spaulding is an experience like no other and your camper will be the one to benefit. The Staff at Camp Spaulding is among the best you will find anywhere as they adhere to a very high standard of quality programming and camp philosophy: Camp should be fun. Camp should be meaningful. Our staff will be there with your camper every step of the way to ensure a summer like no other. If they are having the best day of their summer, or need some support to pick themselves up, the Camp Spaulding staff are trained to handle everything with emotional support and complete professionalism. If there is one thing your camper will talk about after their experience, it will be the staff!

Camp was great for me as a Leader in Training. I worked very hard but really enjoyed the experience. I felt a sense of camaraderie and loved the idea of working towards the goal of building something. - Leader in Training

THE OVERNIGHT CAMP EXPERIENCE Two Week Traditional Camp (Ages 8-15) The resident camping experience is one of the strongest programs of the YMCA today. Led by adult role models, campers will live, eat, play, and grow with their peers. Through all aspects of the camp day, the cabin unit becomes your camper s home base and greatest unit of support. Guide Program (Ages 13+) As your camper grows, so will the opportunity to become a stronger leader. Our older campers will be given the ability to work with our younger campers to begin to learn what it takes to be a staff member at camp. Under the guidance of a staff mentor, our 13+ campers can assist in facilitating programs and find their voice as a leader. Rite of Passage (One Week Camp, Ages 7-10) Maybe your camper is looking for a taste of what an overnight camp is like; Rite of Passage camp is the experience your camper is looking for. Campers in this one week session get a sample of the resident camping experience. Leaders in Training ( Ages16+) A chance for our older campers to learn what it takes to become a positive youth development role model. Teens will be part of a cohesive team that will be essential in the operation of camp and gain experience working with campers. This program requires an application and a selection process.
