Opiio A4 Thursday, November 13, 2014 WINNISQUAM ECHO GUEST COMMENTARY I still start my day with Ray! Editor s ote: The followig guest commetary was submitted for publicatio by Ke Norto, the Executive Director of NAMI NH, the New Hampshire chapter of the Natioal Alliace o Metal Illess. Although this week marks the oe year aiversary of Executive Coucilor Ray Burto s death, today started much like every other day of the past twety five or so years. After my shower I gave a few quick pulls o my blue ubreakable Vote For Raymod S. Burto comb ad I was o my way. Oh to be sure, 25 years ago I had a lot more hair, it was t grey, ad the comb may have bee red or black but it was oe of Ray s. I do t recall where I first met Ray, but I remember he haded me a comb, pulled a three-by-five card out of his shirt pocket ad wrote dow my ame ad tow. The ext time I saw him, he remembered my ame. Now I do t care what folks say about Ray havig a kack for ames. Whatever talet he had for it, it also must have take a fair amout of effort ad cocetratio. Ad is there a better way to commuicate to someoe that they are importat tha rememberig their ame? Back the, I did t hold ay positio of importace ad there was o real reaso to remember my ame except I lived i his district ad that was good eough for Ray. My tow, Tilto, is at the absolute souther ed of Ray s district. I always loved seeig him hold up the etire state highway map, tuck oe fold up from the bottom ad proudly say that s my district! I was relieved every time redistrictig was over ad we were still with Ray. I might live i cetral New Hampshire, but my heart is i the North Coutry! It was comfortig to kow whe I called Ray he would promptly retur my calls, try to help whe asked, or liste ad discuss a issue eve whe we disagreed. Not all other elected officials over the years were as reliable or courteous. Whe my bride first ra for Belkap Couty Attorey, we trasformed our old Volvo 122 ito a campaig vehicle ad I wet to DMV to get a Atique plate. Whe told my first choice VOTE was available, I said to the clerk I ca t believe Ray Burto does t have it. Ray could t believe it either, whe we showed up at the first Old Home day parade of campaig seaso he exclaimed, Where did you ever get that plate? I always felt a little bad about it, give his love of atique cars ad always beig three votes behid. Ray ejoyed all forms of trasportatio. His airplae tour of the regioal airports ad his aual trai ride were legedary. As the logstadig Chairma of the Goveror s Advisory Commissio o Itermodal Trasportatio, Ray also champioed alterative trasportatio ad the ow flourishig etwork of pedestria ad recreatioal trails throughout our state. Betwee the early seve terms my wife served as Couty Attorey, ad my work i metal health ad servig o oprofit boards, I came ito icreasig cotact with Ray. He was everywhere, at public hearigs ad commuity or civic evets i his district, ad at the State House. He was ofte accompaied by yet aother wide eyed ad wet behid the ears iter gettig a real life educatio. But it was t just the iters that leared from Ray, he taught me a lot ad may others too. These were valuable lessos about politics, people ad life. Ray could work a room like o other, ad he treated everyoe equally from the pereial presidetial cadidates that flocked to our state to the plumber dow the street. Ray defied what it meas to be a public servat. If Ray had a bad day he ever showed it, he was always upbeat ad movig forward. Eve whe oe of Ray s aides was ivolved i a scadal ad other elected officials called o Ray to resig, he apologized but stayed the course. Ad while his costituets voted out may who had called for his resigatio, we did re-elect Ray. He had doe way too much good to be defied by oe lapse of judgmet which stemmed from believig i the good of people. Ray loved people ad we loved him back. So tomorrow, I will agai start my day with Ray, ad as his comb slides through my thiig hair ad over my brai, I ll make a coscious choice ad aspire to be positive, to ejoy ad respect everyoe equally, to promote civil discourse ad to be a servat leader. Uder this arragemet, you d place some assets, such as stocks or real estate, ito a trust, which could the use these assets to pay you a lifetime icome stream. Whe you establish the trust, you may be able to receive a immediate tax deductio based o the charitable group s remaider iterest the amout the charity is likely to ultimately receive. (This figure is determied by a IRS formula.) Upo your death, the trust would reliquish the remaiig assets to the charitable orgaizatio you ve amed. This type of trust ca be complex, so to create oe, you ll eed to work with your tax ad legal advisors. While the tax beefits associated with charitable givig are sigificat, they should ot, ultimately, drive your giftig decisios. You should also cosider the effect your gift will have o the other areas of your estate cosideratios so make sure you commuicate your plas to your family members. Fis ad Feathers Fly tyig through the ages BY RAYMOND KUCHARSKI Cotributig Writer No oe kows for certai who, where or whe the first fish was caught o a fly. There are records datig back to the third cetury. The philosopher Aelie tells i his De Natura Aimalium about Isaac from Macedoia, who reached ito his earthe jar for a grub oly to fid he was out of bait. Ispired, he plucked a feather from a earby chicke ad wrapped it aroud the hook shak. This simple fly was the first soft hackle wet fly. Isaac cast it ito the Astraeus ad wham, he ad the fish were hooked o fly-fishig. I 1496, just four years after Columbus sailed, Dame Juliaa Berers described methods of fly dressig ad fly-fishig i a book titled Trease of Fysshyge Wyth a Agle. Agle is defied as causig a agle, as i betwee a rod ad its lie. Some of those historic patters outlied i her book are still used today. Years later a Eglishma took time off from civilizig the world ad wrote a book. His ame was also Isaak - Isaak Walto: ad the book was titled, The Compleat Agler or The Cotemplative Ma s Recreatio. Fishig has ot bee the same sice. He wrote about the duflie, the stoe-flie, the red-flie, the moor-flie, the tawie-flie, ad also of the caterpillar, or the Palmer-flie or worm. The palmer fly or Wooly Worm became the foreruer of today s Woolly Buggers. I the latter part of the 19th cetury, America fly-tyers ad fly-fisherme advaced the art. The father of the dry fly i America, Theodore Gordo, was castig his Quill Gordo dry fly, o the Neversik River i his beloved Catskill s moutais. He dressed his flies i a impressioistic style imitatig aquatic isects. What Theodore taught us was to fish dry flies upstream ad to keep a diary of fishig coditios ad isect hatches. The theme of his work, captured i his jourals, was The great charm of This touramet is ot limited just to summer me s league teams ad players. Players ca certaily joi i with their team from this past summer, or they ca mix ad match teammates, or ivite frieds who have t played before to joi i. The league is reachig out across the Lakes Regio (ad beyod) i a effort to reach more players for this touramet ad raise substatial fuds. Do't miss your chace to register for the Lakes Regio's ewest Thaksgivig traditio. You do ot eed a full roster to register your team as roster moves ca be made up to Thaksgivig day. Click over to LRFFL. com ad click o the register tab. COURTESY PHOTO Fly tyig has come a log way. fly fishig is that we are always learig. I the last half-cetury silk fly lies measured by diameter gave way to sythetic lies measured by weight. Graphite replaced split bamboo ad fiberglass rods. New fly-tyig materials ad thousad of ew fly patters were developed. Someoe said that if we do ot kow history we are doomed to repeat it. But i fly-fishig ad fly-tyig, kowledge of its history is ot required to have fu. For like aglers of old, sittig dow ad tyig some wool, fur ad feathers o a hook creatig your ow masterpiece, goig to the water, castig it i ad seeig a fish raise to take your creatio remais the same thrillig experiece that hooked Izaac from Macedoia.
