3 Infrastructure and Development Services Department MANAGEMENT REPORT Date: June 13, 2016 To: Planning and Heritage Committee From: Rachel Tucker, Planner Report#: PLA16-014 Attachments: None Title: Stratford-Perth Archives Archives History Pin Project Objective: To consider the approval of an 8.5 x 11 inch (21 cm x 28 cm) sign that would be mounted into the ground at roughly 5 feet (1.5 m) in height, to be located at various places including the rear of City Hall, the old pump house on Romeo Street South (now Stratford Gallery), and on the boulevard on Nile Street abutting the train station. Background: The Stratford-Perth Archives are proposing an Archives History Pin Project within the City of Stratford. The Archives History Pin Project is an outreach project that actively promotes the resources available at the Archives by informing the public about local history at prominent sites. The program accomplishes this by creating a forum where the public can share their memories and experiences at sites included in the project through social media and mobile devices. The content for the project will be generated from the Archives Profile on the website History Pin 1. History Pin is a social media website where users can set up an account or profile and share photos and multimedia by pinning them to locations on a map of the world. The photos are tagged with a title, address and date as well as comments and subject tags from the user. Related pins can be sorted together into collections and tours. The project proposes to connect people with the content on the Archives History Pin Profile by providing an 8.5 x11 inch (21 cm x 28 cm) sign that would be mounted into the ground at approximately 5 feet (1.5 m) high at the proposed locations listed below. The sign will list the other sites included in the outreach project, information about how to learn about the sites online, and how to share stories and experiences. The sign will also include a QR Code, that when scanned by a mobile device, will open up the content for the pin for the user. From there, the user can obtain information about a specific site and identify 1 http://www.historypin.com Page 1
4 other sites that they may want to visit. The user can leave comments through a Google, Facebook or Twitter account about their experience and interact with others who have left comments. To view the pins a mobile device with a QR code scanner (most new devices come equipped) and access to a mobile internet browser will be required. Visit the Stratford History Pin Profile website 2 for additional information. The following sites have been proposed to be featured in the Archives History Pin Project: 1. Court House: in the lawn/ garden to the right of the walkway in front of the steps up to the front door 2. 24 St. Andrew Street: in the garden to the right of the steps up to the front door 3. Jail: to the left of the tree out front of 24 St. Andrew Street 4. The Library: in or near the garden/ benches in front of the library at the intersection of Church Street and St. Andrew Street 5. City Hall: at the rear of the property on a no parking sign 6. Stratford Armoury: in the lawn to the left of the front door 7. Train Station: the north east section of the Shakespeare Park (along Nile Street or at the corner of Nile Street and Shakespeare Street) 8. Pump House: in the garden/ lawn to the right of the walkway near the front doors All signs are to be erected and maintained by the Stratford-Perth Archives. Three of the eight signs are proposed on City owned property (City Hall, old pump house and on the boulevard on Nile Street next to the train station). If the site on Nile Street abutting the train station does not work, an alternative location would be the northeast section of Shakespeare Park along Nile Street. All signs proposed on private property require the consent of the owner. This proposal was circulated to the Heritage Stratford Permit Review Committee for comments. The following comments were received: Project is a great idea The program Toronto in Time 3 did a great job. It is important that the online interface is user friendly. Heritage Stratford is going to be redesigning their website and would welcome the opportunity to raise awareness of this as well. 2 http://www.historypin.com/channels/view/47558#!photos/list/ 3 http://citiesintime.ca/toronto/ Page 2

6 Analysis: The proposed Archives History Pin Project will provide a public forum that will educate the public about local history at eight prominent sites in Stratford and will provide the public with a new way to share memories, information and experiences associated with the site. The proposed locations at the rear of City Hall, the old pump house and on the boulevard on Nile Street (or on the northeast section of Shakespeare Park along Nile Street) are prominent locations within Stratford. All signs will be erected and maintained at the cost of Stratford- Perth Archives. Financial Impact: None. Staff Recommendation: That Council approve the request from Stratford-Perth Archives to allow the attached sign at various locations including the rear of City Hall, the old pump house on Romeo Street South (now Stratford Gallery), and on the boulevard on Nile Street abutting the train station (with the northeast section of Shakespeare Park along Nile Street being an alternative location).
