Ripples Dos Rios Yacht Club October 2018 Commodore Bob Burget This has been a busy Summer, and we have had some good activities. Our anchorout at Mildred Island was held in August. Thanks to all who attended, and to Rich and Mary Holden for their organization skills. I was unable to attend due to travel plans back East, and I hope everyone enjoyed the time together. A number of us did attend the cruise to Antioch in September and it was both fun and educational. Most boats were already there, but the car cruisers, including me, showed up too. There was a potluck dinner Friday night on the dock, and an East Bay Regional Parks Black Diamonds Mine Tour on Saturday. It was cool and comfortable in the mine and the docent gave us plenty of in interesting information on the local history. Saturday night, we had a dinner at the Riverview Lodge, combined with a rather informal but still useful business meeting. Thanks to Bob and Mary Knott for running the cruise. Here are some key points that we discussed. Rumors of my moving Back East turned out to be somewhat premature. Hurricane Florence got there before me and made a huge mess of both Carolinas. Recovery will take some time. I don't know how long, but I'm glad I'm still here now. Nobody can ever replace our dear departed Treasurer, Gretchen Glenn. Our condolences go to Ron and his family. I hope we can offer whatever support is possible. We are fortunate to have Staff Commodore Kevin Park to fill in as Treasurer, and we can thank him profusely. The Membership Committee reports continuing progress with new members. There was a discussion on whether to revise or streamline the process for inducting new people, and whether we can invite nonmembers to participate in a cruise. We welcome your thoughts on these topics and membership in general. The Nominating Committee has been hard at work and should have some exciting news at the November 10 Meeting (1 PM at The Point in Rio Vista.) Rear Commodore Manny Ramirez gave us a sneak preview of next year's cruise schedule. It contains some favorites such as Grindstone Joe's and the Vallejo Pirate Festival. There will be more on this at the November 10 meeting. You may also mark your calendar for the Change Of Watch. Staff Commodore Kevin Park has arranged for us to meet on Saturday, January 12, at Buon Appetito in Oakley for a luncheon. In the meantime, get ready for the Fall Cruise. See Vice Commodore Marta Van Loan's article in this Ripples for more information. I look forward to seeing you soon, Bob In This Issue Antioch Cruise Pictures Page 02 Mildred Island\ Pictures Page 03 Antioch Cruise Pictures Page 05 Cruise Schedule Page 07 Fall Cruise Info & Sign-up Page 08

DOS RIOS FALL CRUISE 2018 South Beach Harbor, San Francisco October 20, 21, 22 Oakland Yacht Club, Alameda October 23, 24 Dear Dos Rios; We have been having beautiful fall weather and it s perfect timing for a cruise to the Bay and environs. This year we will spend 3 days at South Beach Harbor, adjacent to AT&T park, with easy access to city transportation, e.g. MUNI trolley and buses and BART. Naturally, if your destination is far afield there is always UBER we re such UBER experts now! Over the course of our summer cruises I have heard from a number of cruisers that you liked the more relaxed and informal approach to cruise activities such as quiet suppers without all the clamor of a yacht club and a schedule packed with daily activities, but a dinner together at a nearby restaurant one evening would be nice. I ve heard your message and, therefore, have made no formal plans for dinners or daily activities on this cruise. Rather, I ll use this space to give everyone ideas as to how you might want to spend your time during the day. There is so much to do in the city I could write pages and we could spend a week and still have more to do. But here are some highlights. As a follow-up to our September cruise in Antioch and the tour of Black Diamond Mines there is a geology exhibit at the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park. If you are not familiar with the Academy of Science you can visit an aquarium, planetarium, and natural history museum all under one living roof. Yes, the roof is alive kinda cool! You can walk on the roof. While the lines can be long its well worth the wait. Hours are Mon- Sat 9:30 5:00pm; Sunday 11:00am 5:00pm. Admission: adults (18-64) = $35.95; Senior (65+) = $30.95. Individual tickets can be purchased in advance: https://www.calacademy.org/buy -tickets, but if everyone is interested group tickets can be purchased in advance and at a discount. Also, in Golden Gate Park is the DeYoung Museum of Fine Arts. The M. H. de Young Memorial Museum, commonly referred as the de Young, is a fine arts museum located in Gems and Minerals Unearthed Marvel at nearly 400 dazzling and dramatic specimens from the Academy's geology collection from iconic gems to newly-displayed natural wonders. San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, and one of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco along with the Legion of Honor. The de Young is named for its founder, early San Francisco newspaperman M. H. de Young. Current exhibits include: Weapons of Mass Destruction: The Art of Propaganda; First Impressions: Prints from the Anderson Collection; native Artists of Western North America; Contemporary Muslim Fashions; and much more. Open Tuesday Sunday: 9:30 am 5:15 pm. Adults $15, Seniors $12. 8

Closer to our South Beach Harbor location is the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA). The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is a modern art museum located in San Francisco, California. A nonprofit organization, SFMOMA holds an internationally recognized collection of modern and contemporary art, and was the first museum on the West Coast devoted solely to 20th-century art. Address: 151 3rd St, San Francisco, CA 94103. Open Friday Tuesday 10am 5 pm. Admission Adults: $25; Seniors $22. Contemporary Jewish Museum: The Contemporary Jewish Museum is a non- collecting museum at 736 Mission Street at Yerba Buena Lane in the South of Market neighborhood of San Francisco, California. The CJM as a non-collecting institution that partners with national and international cultural institutions to present exhibitions that are both timely and relevant and represent the highest level of artistic achievement and scholarship. Location: 736 Mission St, San Francisco, CA 94103. Open Sunday Tuesday 11am 5pm. General Admission: $14; Senior Admission: $12. Other Interesting options: Asian Art Museum at Civic Center Bart/ Muni stop; Pier 39; National Park Service Hyde Street Pier and the Historic Ships; Legion of Honor Art Museum in Lincoln Park fabulous view overlooking the Pacific Ocean and a nice café for lunch. BTW all the SF Art Museums have nice cafés for a tasty lunch. HOPE THIS SAMPLING ON INFORMATION HAS WHETED YOUR APPETITE TO JOIN US IN SAN FRANCISCO. There is so much to see and do! 9
