When I was a junior at Stanford studying at the Stanford Overseas Center in Salamanca in Spain, my classmates and I traveled up and down the west coast of Europe on endless bus rides and train trips, learning much about this fascinating part of Europe. While we covered a lot of ground, it was not the most comfortable of journeys. You, however, can have not only a much richer intellectual experience, but also enjoy it while cruising in style aboard the splendid Sea Cloud II. Stanford Faculty Leader Professor Kennedy s lectures were marvelous! MARY FIEDLER, MARTA NEW ZEALAND OSTERLOH, BY 70, PRIVATE CUBA, AIR, 2013 2011 DAVID M. KENNEDY, 63, a member of the Stanford faculty since 1967, is the Donald J. McLachlan Professor of History, emeritus, and founding director of The Bill Lane Center for the American West at Stanford. Over the course of his long and esteemed academic career, the renowned historian has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses in American foreign policy, the comparative development of democracy in Europe and the U.S., the history of the 20th-century United States, American political and social thought, American literature and the evolution of the American West. His scholarship is notable for its integration of economic and cultural analyses with social and political history, an outcome of his interdisciplinary training in American studies, which combined history, literature and economics. Professor Kennedy has lectured on American history around the globe and contributed his expertise to a broad swath of national media, from The Atlantic Monthly and The New York Times to the PBS NewsHour and productions aired on PBS C-Span and NPR. He has also served on the advisory board for the PBS series, The American Experience, and authored some 10 books, including his Pulitzer Prize-winning Freedom from Fear and his best-selling high school textbook, The American Pageant. On this trip he plans to lecture on WWII, including its background in earlier calamities of WWI and the Great Depression, and its consequences for the world we have lived in since 1945. He will give special attention to the D-Day invasion of the Normandy beaches, one of the most legendary episodes in the epic conflict that was WWII. Additional leader EMILY BAKEMEIER is currently the deputy provost at Yale University; in her nearly two decades at Yale, she has served in several high-ranking administrative roles. Her area of expertise is 16th- and 17th-century northern European art. After having concentrated her early research on 17th-century Dutch and Flemish painting and northern European architectural history, Emily turned her attention to French royal portraiture and iconography from the reign of François I (1515 1547) to that of Louis XIV (1661 1715). Designed by awardwinning American architect Frank Gehry, this icon of 20th-century architecture contains a collection of some of the most intriguing artworks of our age. SEA CLOUD II (B,L,D) WEDNESDAY, MAY 29 SAN SEBASTIÁN This morning call at the port of Paisajes for a morning walking tour of the Basque town of San Sebastián, known for its sophisticated culinary scene and named a European Capital of Culture in 2016. Explore the city s historic center and learn about Basque culinary traditions during tastings at a local pintxos bar. This afternoon, enjoy a specially arranged visit to the pioneering Albaola Factory and Museum, where experts on maritime heritage and boatbuilding are constructing a replica of the 16th-century Basque whaling ship San Juan. Return to our ship and relax aboard as the Sea Cloud II cruises toward France. Gather this evening for a welcome dinner hosted by the captain. SEA CLOUD II (B,L,D) FRIDAY, MAY 31 LA PALLICE, FRANCE / LA ROCHELLE OR ÎLE DE RÉ This morning, from the port of La Pallice, take a guided walking tour through the center of La Rochelle, a major seaport and the historic base of the Knights Templar and later the Hugeunots. Stroll past the 14th-century stone defensive towers and stop for a guided tour of The Bunker, a museum focused on the wartime history of La Rochelle, housed in an original bunker built as a bomb shelter and living quarters for German military officers during WWII. Alternatively, visit charming Île de Ré, with its small fishing ports, historic lighthouses, and idyllic views of windmills, sand beaches and salt pans. Return to our ship for lunch on board and an afternoon of cruising. SEA CLOUD II (B,L,D) SATURDAY, JUNE 1 LORIENT Arrive midmorning in Lorient, on the northwestern coast of France in the department of Brittany. The port grew to prominence in the 17th century, during the heyday of France s trade with Africa and Post-trip Extension JUNE 5 TO 7, 2019 (2 ADDITIONAL DAYS) NORMANDY (D-DAY ANNIVERSARY) Commemorate the heroism of the D-Day landings on the 75th anniversary (June 6, 2019). Spend two nights at the Hôtel Barrière Le Normandy in Deauville. Visits include: Pointe du Hoc, a strategic promontory where American troops scaled cliffs to capture German defenses; the German Cemetery at La Cambe; the Mulberry Harbor at Arromanches to learn about this engineering marvel that assisted in landing the forces following the initial invasion; and the artillery battery at Longues-sur-Mer. On the 75th anniversary itself, visit the Normandy-American Cemetery and Memorial and walk on the crucial Allied landing site of Omaha Beach. Conclude with a transfer to Paris for flights home. Learn about this period of French maritime history during a guided tour of the Museum of the East India Company, housed in the citadel itself, then enjoy a private lunch at a historic château. Visit the nearby Keroman Submarine Base, where German Grand Admiral Karl Donitz had enormous concrete structures built to shelter part of Germany s submarine fleet in World War II, with a capacity of a total of 30 submarines in three separate bunkers. The bunkers were so effective at protecting the U-boat fleet that Allied forces resorted to bombing Lorient itself to cut off the supply lines to the base, decimating nearly 90% of the city in the process. Return to our ship for lunch before setting out on an afternoon visit to the abbey of Mont Saint- Michel, a beautiful tidal island in Normandy that, along with its 8thcentury monastery and bay, has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. SEA CLOUD II (B,L,D) TUESDAY, JUNE 4 CAEN / BAYEUX / SAINTE-MÈRE-ÉGLISE After a final morning of cruising, we arrive in Normandy, dropping anchor outside Caen. Spend this afternoon exploring the historic center of Bayeux, including a visit to the Bayeux Tapestry Museum, home of one of the most famous historical chronicles in the world, the Bayeux Tapestry. Listed on UNESCO s Memory of the World Register, the tapestry is a 230- foot-long embroidered account of William, Duke of Normandy, conquering of England in 1066, and it provides a unique and rare insight into the medieval world. Alternatively, in this 75thanniversary year of D-Day, learn about the air and sea fronts of the Allied invasion of Normandy in June of 1944 with visits to the Airborne Museum in Sainte-Mère- Église, the first town to be liberated by American paratrooper divisions, and Utah Beach whose vivid displays at its Landing Museum immerse visitors in the story of D-Day. Gather this evening for a farewell reception and dinner on board our ship, which remains docked in Caen s port overnight. WHAT TO EXPECT We consider this program to be moderately active. Most of our touring is done by motor coach and boat. Some excursions involve short walks. Travelers will have ample opportunity to take in the beautiful scenery from the comfort of our ship. Daily excursions involve one to three miles of walking with tours as long as three hours that might include stairs without handrails, high thresholds and uneven terrain such as cobbled paths and beaches. Seas can be choppy. Participants should feel comfortable walking on a rocking ship and able to climb in and out of tenders for a shore excursion. Our journey at times requires several hours of motor coach travel, the longest drives being up to two hours. Participants must be physically fit, active and in good health.
