Our world famous waterfalls tour offers short and long hikes in serene, natural settings. About half of the waterfalls on our tour are located in the Marinette County Parks system. A $3.00 per day (per car) or $12.00 per year (per car) entrance fee can be paid at park entrances and is valid for admission to all county parks. Daves Falls - Amberg, WI A beautiful county park on the Pike River, located 1 mile south of Amberg on Highway 141. The park includes 2 waterfalls with unique rock formations. There are grills for cooking, playground and restroom facilities. Piers Gorge - Niagara, WI Located on the Menominee River, Cross the bridge into Michigan on Highway 8 near Niagara and watch for signs. Take a left at sign and go to the end of the road. It's about a 1/2 mile walk to the rapids. Great rafting at these falls. Great fishing as well! Smalley Falls - Pembine & Niagara, WI Head north on Highway 141 to Morgan Park Road, located between Pembine and Niagara. Turn east on Morgan Park road and watch for a sign indicating the turnoff to the falls (1/4 mile). The turnoff goes to a small grassy parking area where a walking trail leads to the falls. Steep slopes offer a beautiful view of the falls. The turnoff leading to the parking area can be rough. 2 l Marinette County
Long Slide Falls - Pembine & Niagara, WI Continue on Morgan Park Road to a sign showing the turnoff to Long Slide Falls. A parking area is provided; the falls is about a 1/4 mile walk on a nice walking trail. The falls drop about 50 feet through unique rock formations. It's a magnificent scene. Twelve Foot Falls - Dunbar, WI Located on the Pike River, well-known for its trout fishing and natural beauty. The falls are easily accessible in the County Park with camping and picnicking available. Take Beecher Lake Road off of Highway 141 to Smeester School Road. Take a left to Trout Haven Road and a right on Trout Haven to Twelve Foot Falls Road. Follow the signs; the road is well marked and part gravel. Eight Foot Falls - Amberg & Pembine, WI Eight Foot Falls is just a short walk through the campground area at Twelve Foot Falls. This is very rugged terrain! therealnorth.com l 3
Veterans Park Falls - Crivitz, WI A beautiful county park on the Pike River, located 1 mile south of Amberg on Highway 141.The Park includes 2 waterfalls with unique rock formations. There are grills for cooking, playground and restroom facilities. McClintock Rapids - Goodman, WI Take Parkway Road from Crivitz or Highway 8 to McClintock Park on the Peshtigo River. The fall is a series of rapids with bridges for exceptional views. Camping and picnicking areas are available. Carney Rapids - Goodman, WI Follow Hwy 8 east from Goodman a short distance to Old Country Road A, where you ll turn south and go approximately two miles to the first bridge. Carney Rapids is not a waterfall, but an area of rushing water that can be viewed from the road just to the west of the bridge. Four Foot Falls - Goodman, WI The road to Four Foot Falls is just north of the bridge on County Road A where Carney Rapids is located. This is a gravel road that leads to a parking lot. 4 l Marinette County
Strong Falls - Goodman, WI Head north on Hwy 141 to Morgan Park Road, located between Pembine and Niagara. Turn east on Morgan Park road and watch for a sign indicating the turnoff to the falls (1/4 mile). The turnoff goes to a small grassy parking area and the trail leads to the falls. Steep slopes offer a beautiful view of the falls. The turnoff leading to the parking area can be rough. Eighteen Foot Falls - Dunbar, WI Eighteen Foot Falls is about 1 mile from Twelve Foot Falls. Go north from the park to the second sand road on the right. Drive or walk to the parking area. Follow the foot path to Eighteen Foot Falls on the Pike River. Horseshoe Falls - Dunbar, WI From Twelve Foot Falls Park take Twelve Foot Falls Road south of Trout Haven Road to Forest Road 510 (FR510). Take FR-510 about 1/2 mile to the turnoff to the falls (watch for sign). This turnoff leads to a small parking area where a walking trail leads to the falls. Bull Falls - Amberg, WI Take Highway K east of Highway 141 about 1/2 mile to the power line right of way. Walk a couple blocks north under the lines. There are 304 rivers and streams which can give you an additional 920 miles of possible fishing opportunities. Marinette County also offers fantastic ice fishing. Caldron Falls Flowage, High Falls Flowage and Lake Noquebay are probably the best areas to drop your line. Home to nearly 300 miles of awardwinning ATV trails, the systems are so diverse that no matter what your riding pleasure, this area will satisfy your desire. Riders in search of challenging off road terrain will find no freeway trails here! Marinette County allows UTV's to use all designated all-terrain vehicle trails and routes throughout the County. Majority of this trail system is open year round except when they are closed for approximately the month of April due to soft & wet trail conditions during the spring break-up. 10 l Marinette County
E asily accessible trails through the forest and open areas offer scenic photo opportunities. The natural north woods beauty we appreciate is magnified on an ATV ride. Volunteers from the six Marinette County ATV Clubs provide wide, well maintained trails for your riding enjoyment. ATV operation is allowed on designated ATV trails that are clearly marked with the state approved brown and white 6 x 6 ATV trail signs. Municipalities throughout the county have also designated road routes marked by green signs to aid in accessing the trail systems. Trails are easily accessible with park-n-ride locations set throughout the county. The first and only All-Terrain Vehicle campground in Marinette County is located at McClintock County Park, a few miles north of Silver Cliff. Just south of the park s day use area on County I, McClintock County Park offers a rustic campground with direct trail access. Marinette County is one of the few counties in Wisconsin that offer year-round ATV trails. Our trails do close for a few weeks every spring to prevent erosion of the trail base. Trails are developed and maintained on both public and private property. Touring the trails will take you through miles of winding, tree-lined areas with rolling hills and open fields. This is where you will enjoy the breathtaking scenery that Marinette County has to offer. Snowmobiling gets more popular every year in our area, as visitors discover this area's vast interconnected network of wellcared-for trails. Trails usually open on or around December 15, depending on snow conditions, and close around March 15. Be sure to stay on marked trails at all times. therealnorth.com l 13
T hunder Mountain County Park is the highest point in Marinette County and provides breathtaking views and scenic trails. The trails are well-maintained and excellent for hiking. The Long Slide Trail System was developed as part of the County Forest Wildlife Habitat Program. It is a system of old logging roads and wildlife openings which are closed to vehicular travel. Featuring beautiful rock outcroppings visible from the trails, this system also has a lowland cedar swamp along the eastern border of the system. The Lake Mary Trail is a loop that is located in the smaller block of county forest northeast of Lake Noquebay. It runs through an aspen forest which is completely surrounded by a lowland cedar swamp. Also part of the County Forest Wildlife Habitat Program, the Peshtigo River Trails are intended to provide a serene area to hike, observe nature, wildlife and hunt. Directly west of Goodman Park in Northwestern Marinette County this system totals almost 9 miles. Hemlock Curve Nature Trail is perfect for families and is part of the Peshtigo Harbor Wildlife Area Trails Project. The Frog Slough Loop is approximately 1.1 miles in length and Deer Trail Loop is slightly smaller at 1 mile. The trail leads you through the forest beside the scenic Peshtigo River and past a grove of hemlocks. Morgan Park Walking Trail is a hike around beautiful Timm's Lake where you can view the breathtaking scenery or watch the ducks and loons swim in Loon Bay. A moderate hike, but well worth the scenic beauty. Riverside Park Trail System has a series of trails following the banks of the Menominee River. Located in the city of Niagara, meaning "thundering waters", these trails feature bluff views and the wooded beauty of all four seasons. Governor Thompson State Park consists of over 2800 acres on the Caldron Falls Flowage. Head off the beaten path to find the picturesque granite outcroppings, birds and animals of the area. Peshtigo River State Forest is comprised of various loops that provide a variety of distances and extremely steep hills, breathtaking views of the river and quiet serenity except for the rush of the Peshtigo River. Seagull Bar at Red Arrow Park is located in the City of Marinette on the shores of Green Bay; Red Arrow Park has picnic and play areas and a sand beach to compliment the nature trails. 14 l Marinette County
I f you enjoy hunting, then a great adventure is in store for you! Marinette County has thousands of acres of public hunting land. The area is home to white-tailed deer, black bear, grouse, turkey, geese, bobcat, coyote, fox, muskrat, raccoon, and pheasant. Marinette County has one of the largest deer populations in the state. Bow and rifle seasons are offered in the fall. With two deer hunting seasons in the county, you have ample time to shoot your trophy buck. Every farmer that seeks abatement and claims for damage caused by Whitetail deer through the WDACP must allow hunting for Whitetail deer on their enrolled property. This same rule applies to claims made for damages caused by bears, wild turkeys, and geese. Turkey hunting in both spring and fall is becoming more popular. Walk along forest roads and fire lanes to find the best locations for grouse, or head to the southern part of the county to find pheasant near the farm areas. therealnorth.com l 15
C ross country skiing is a great way to get out and enjoy the outdoors in the winter. In Marinette County, you ll find both a state park and state forest with miles of groomed trails open to skiers. Peshtigo River State Forest features two groomed loops, one that is 5 miles long and another that is 3 miles long. Gov. Thompson State Park also has 6 miles of groomed ski trails. Candlelight ski and hike nights are held at both locations. Marinette County also offers cross country ski trails along the Peshtigo River at the Hemlock Curve trails. This is a twomile system with easy terrain that can also be hiked. The Woods Road ski trail is another great option. It s about 6 miles in length and lends itself well to snow shoeing. Paust LLC offers cross country skiing on 5 miles of groomed trails, plus ski rental packages. M arinette County is home to nine golf courses, all of which offer exciting play, beautiful scenery, and the relaxed enjoyment many associate with an afternoon playing the links. Each course offers various challenges. One is on an island surrounded by the Menominee River. Others have mature trees throughout the course with white-tailed deer or possibly turkey roaming through the fairways. No matter what the challenge is, these courses will test your ability. Courses are open to the public and offer anywhere from 9 to 27 holes and driving ranges either on-site or nearby, each course has its special atmosphere. In Peshtigo, you can find a course that is located in farm fields. In Bicycling & Sailing the Crivitz area, you may find a course located in the rolling hills or nestled in a forest. Zip-lining the forest canopy can be an exciting adventure offering bird s eye views as you fly down the lines! Safety is always the number one priority on zip-line tours. Almost anyone can participate. Keep in mind when considering this type of activity that you must be at least 70 pounds and not more than 270 pounds in weight. P aintball is growing in popularity all over, and Marinette County is no exception. This is a game of strategy in which individuals or teams try to eliminate their opponents by tagging them with paintballs. Using a paintball gun or marker, players shoot at each other to remove opponents from the game. B icycling in Marinette County is truly a family affair. From the minute the snow thaws, you can expect to see cyclists on every road and in every corner of the county. A bicycle tour of Marinette County should definitely include a visit to one of our many waterfalls or a ride along the scenic shores of Green Bay. We offer many other road routes that anyone can enjoy covering various types of geographical terrain. Regardless of which type of cycling you like to engage in, Marinette County terrain ranges from flat to fairly hilly. You can expect to find a wide variety of biking opportunities. M arinette County borders the shores of Lake Michigan s Green Bay, providing sailing opportunities for the avid mariner. The waters of Green Bay are perfect for sailing, fishing and scuba diving. There are numerous islands dotting these waters where you can expect to find migrating birds nesting for the season. These islands are also responsible for the many sunken ships littering the lake s bottom, making it a haven for scuba divers. The warm, shallow water on the western shore of Lake Michigan makes the perfect habitat for aquatic life. 18 l Marinette County
T he 2,800-acre Governor Thompson State Park is 15 miles northwest of Crivitz in Marinette County, part of Wisconsin's Northeast Sands ecological landscape. This property, located on the Caldron Falls Flowage offers a boat launch, two inland lakes, picnic areas, beach, and wooded trails with scenic views for both skiing and hiking. With 87 rustic and 16 electric campsites, and 3 boat-in campsites the state park offers campers from all walks of life a unique opportunity to enjoy the North woods. The site protects 5,300 feet of shoreline on Wood and Huber Lakes and protects Handsaw Creek and Woods Lake Outlet. The main parcel creating the park is the former 1,987-acre Paust Woods Lake Resort and about 200 acres of wild-looking lakefront bought from Wisconsin Public Service Corporation on Caldron Falls Reservoir. The park was established in 2000, the Wisconsin State Park System's centennial year, and is open as a day-use park. While the park is developing more recreational areas there are many things for visitors to do such as boating, hiking, berry picking, fishing, swimming, picnicking, relaxing, and deer gun hunting. The park has developed a picnic area and enclosed shelter on Woods Lake. The park has also rebuilt Boat Landing 13 on Caldron Falls Flowage with additional ramps, parking, and restrooms. therealnorth.com l 19
Morgan Park Morgan Park Located on Timm's Lake, six miles east of Pembine. In 1958, Marinette County accepted responsibility for developing the park from local youth and civic groups. Morgan Park provides a 44- sites all with electricity (16 sites are available on first come, first serve basis). Goodman Park Goodman Park has a 15-site campground on the Peshtigo River in the heart of the Marinette County Forest. Goodman Park offers a bridge over Strong Falls on the upper Peshtigo River along with numerous nearby streams providing trout fishing. Veterans Memorial Park Located in the Town of Stephenson, features a bridge over the waterfall. The reflecting pool at the bottom of the falls often plays host to local trout fisherman. Rustic camping and a large day-use area are also available. McClintock Park & Campground This park has four bridges over rapids on the upper Peshtigo River, trout fishing, many great picnic spots, camping, and an interesting hardwood-hemlock timber stand. With 2 entrances the 10-site rustic campground is located right along the Peshtigo River. Water is available at a hand pump. Twelve Foot Falls Park Built in 1956 and 1957 in the center of the County s largest forest plantation. Old time river drivers, who helped move the pine timber logged in the area named the falls by the distance the river dropped over the rock edge. Rustic camping sites are located near the reflecting pool of the falls. 20 l Marinette County
Thunder Mountain Park This park is an undeveloped 160 acre area in the town of Stephenson. The park provides scenic views, peace and quiet. From Crivitz, take Hwy. W west 14 1/2 miles to Cauldron Falls Road. Turn north and go three miles to Thunder Mountain Road. Turn west and go one mile to the mountain. Twin Bridges Park This park is used mainly for water skiing and power boating on the Peshtigo River's High Falls Flowage. Campers can choose from 62 sites with electricity. Picnic tables, outhouses, tent sites, trailer sites, swimming, beach, dressing rooms, playground. Dave s Falls Park Named after a log driver who died in a log jam on the wild Pike River, this park offers a scenic view of the falls as they pound through little canyons and rock outcroppings. From Wausaukee travel north on Hwy. 141. The park is 1/2 mile south of Amberg off 141. Picnic tables, outhouses, hiking, playground. Lake Noquebay Park At Lake Noquebay Park, children can swim safely on the south shore, where the water is shallow and a bathhouse is located close to the beach. It also has picnic tables & shelters, toilets, swimming, dressing rooms, baseball, volleyball, playground and boat landing. Menominee River Park This parks water has remained relatively pristine. T Marinette he City of Marinette is the largest community in Marinette County and sits on the shores of Lake Michigan s Green Bay. It is separated from Michigan s Upper Peninsula by the Menominee River. As a harbor town, Marinette offers excellent fishing on both the waters of Green Bay and the Menominee River. Marinette is full of great places to relax and enjoy the outdoors. Stephenson Island is located on the Menominee River and is the location for many of Marinette s festivals. The island has a playground, stage area, and a boat launch. The Marinette County Historical Logging Museum is located on the island, as well as several historical statues and works of art. The Marinette City Park offers camping and a pavilion for day-use rental with charcoal grills, horseshoe pits, and a playground. Adjacent to City Park is The Marinette Civic Center. This multi-purpose recreation facility houses variety of indoor and outdoor activities throughout the year. Inside you ll find tennis courts, basketball courts, and an indoor ice arena. Outside, the Civic Center has a playground, softball fields and a swimming pool. Red Arrow Park is a favorite beach for locals with a sandy beach on Green Bay, a boat launch, two pavilions and walking trails. Amberg The Town of Amberg is undeniably worth exploring. Amberg has a rich history and a visit to the museum complex is well worth the time. Several buildings are open during the summer to browse and enjoy. Multiple authors and artists call this area home. They can often be found at craft fairs and farmers markets during the season. The Amberg Granite is one of the most extensive veins of granite in Wisconsin and is popular for its variety of color and texture, commonly referred to as Amberg Red. The granite from Amberg has been used around the country and can be found along the curb lined streets of Chicago and incorporated into buildings in Minnesota and Cincinnati. Athelstane A thelstane is a heavily wooded area that offers snowmobiling, ATVing, fishing, hunting, camping, kayaking, canoeing and whitewater rafting. If you re looking for seclusion or a quiet walk in the woods, this area has some beautiful forest roads situated along one of the longest stretches of whitewater in the entire Midwest, the Roaring Rapids section of the Peshtigo River draws people from all around the world to test their skill at tackling these fierce rapids. T Beaver his small community of Beaver offers some great food and some of the best fishing in the county. The beginning of the North Branch of Beaver Creek starts here, near Williston Spring Road. The creek is accessible through public land, so any interested hikers and nature lovers are welcome to explore! Beaver Creek is also known as an excellent trout fishing spot. Nelligan and Gillis Lakes can be found here along with many others. These lakes are also open to the public. Boat landings are available, so travelers can enjoy the lakes to the fullest. Get ready for some GREAT fishing! T Grover he town of Grover is made up of the unincorporated communities of Harmony, May Corner, and Wilcox. Harmony Arboretum is located here, offering some of the best in local bird watching. Master gardeners help to tend the community demonstration gardens, which are filled with vegetables, fruits, herbs, perennials and annuals. Little River Park is located along the river. Quality playground equipment and a quiet setting make it a great pit stop for families. Coleman Coleman is a peaceful village that was mainly settled after the famous Peshtigo Fire of 1871. By 1882, the railroad was being laid through the area which helped the settlers reach markets and lumber businesses. As the railroad grew, so did the village. In 1903, the Village of Coleman was incorporated with just over 560 residents all living within one square mile. Once the village was incorporated, it grew quickly. By 1909, a major highway (US Highway 141), passed through town, which made transportation around the area easier. Within no time Coleman had its own theater, general store, funeral home, lumber company, service station, and many other businesses offering services to the settlers. Pound N amed in honor of Thaddeus Coleman Pound (1833-1914), Pound, Wisconsin is the sister village to Coleman. Thaddeus was a Wisconsin state politician who was the grandfather of the great poet Ezra Pound. F Crivitz rederick J. Bartels founded Crivitz in 1883. He was a businessman who named the village after his hometown of Crivitz, Germany. Centralized in Marinette County, Crivitz is 250 square miles of all season vacation land and waters and offers something special to those who visit this area. We have whitewater rafting and kayaking on the upper stretch of the Peshtigo River, the best in the Midwest. The Village of Crivitz, with its own airport, has grown over the decades to accommodate those who love to live, shop and play in a small town setting. Niagara Niagara, meaning thundering waters to the Iroquois Indians, is a fitting name for the northernmost city in Marinette County. Nestled within the bluffs of the Menominee River, Niagara overlooks some of the most demanding whitewater in the Upper Midwest. A Pembine / Beecher round the year 1887, the Soo Line Railroad was completed. It intersected the Milwaukee Road Railroad at a location where a logging community had sprung up. This intersection became known as the Town of Pembine. Since the 1900s this area has become known for it s outdoor recreation. Pembine, named after the Peme Bon Won River, sits along the Menominee River as the town s eastern most border. The north and south branches of the Pike River, K.C. Creek and the Peme Bon Won (a.k.a the Pemenee) also cross through the area providing top notch trout fishing. Deer, grouse, turkey, bear and rabbit are in great quantity for trophy hunting. Peshtigo I n 1871 America s most devastating fire swept through the Peshtigo area, killing over 1200 people. Rising from the ashes, today people know Peshtigo for its numerous outdoor and recreational opportunities. I Porterfield n 1887, Porterfield was separated from Peshtigo and Marinette to create the town which was named after a local farmer and businessman, John Porterfield. Porterfield is a quiet little town about six miles west of Marinette. Quiet, that is, during 11 months of the year. Made famous for the Porterfield Country Music Festival, the town becomes a booming mecca for campers and country music enthusiasts each June. Twin Bridge / Middle Inlet If you re interested in nature and wildlife, this area of Marinette County needs to be a part of your trip. With an abundance of plant and animal life and well-preserved woodland habitats, this becomes a truly beautiful place to be. There are a number of trails allowing access to hikers, skiers, and snowshoers alike. The Twin Bridge/Middle Inlet area is home to both Governor Thompson State Park and the Peshtigo River State Forest. The High Falls Flowage runs through this part of Marinette County. The scenery along the river s shoreline is simply spectacular. Many islands sprinkled throughout the flowage are suitable for fishing, camping and are only accessible by canoe, kayak or other boats. T Wausaukee / Silver Cliff he Village of Wausaukee is a lovely, folkart community full of fun in every season. It is located within a major resort area featuring a wide variety of outdoor recreation opportunities including hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, rafting, biking, cross country skiing, swimming and off-roading. It is also near some of the county s favorite parks and waterfalls. Public and private hunting lands are located throughout Wausaukee Township. Goodman Goodman is known for its colorful history. The Town of Goodman originated in 1908 as a logging community, and owes its entire existence to the vision and knowledge of the Goodman family. Robert B. Goodman was one of the first in the nation to practice selective logging practices, and he built a lovely community in which to house his employees. The eighth cutting cycle on the original Goodman Lumber Company land took place in 1999. From 1927 through 1999, 417 million board feet of timber have been removed, yet the tract still contains about the same volume of timber that it had in 1927. Recreation is one of the Goodman area's featured attractions. Lake Hilbert offers a variety of opportunities for boating, camping, fishing, etc., and Goodman Park, named for "R.B." himself, is a short drive from downtown Goodman. It offers a walking bridge over Strong Falls, huge red pines, two lodges for day use rental, hiking-skiing trail, camping, picnicking and lovely scenery. Dunbar D unbar is your one stop destination for fun and relaxation in Wisconsin's north woods. We have it all from excellent hunting, fishing, ATV'ing, snowmobiling and horseback riding trails. Dunbar was founded in 1888 during a period of thriving logging industry in the Wisconsin northern woods. At that time the railroad was the main means of transporting logs from Dunbar to the southern part of the state and Illinois. Before the town was officially founded there was a restaurant where a cook with the surname Dunbar worked. Eventually when the town was founded it was after the cook's surname. The Dun-Good Riders Club ensures the best groomed trails in Northern Wisconsin, where we see on average 60" of snowfall annually. In the early 1820 s Farnsworth and his Native American common-law wife, Queen Marinette, after whom the city is said to have taken its name, operated the trading business from the log post for several years. Farnsworth associated with Charles Brush in a business venture, which marked the beginning of a new industry that would dominate the Menominee River Basin for the next fifty years. In 1832, the partners erected a water-powered sawmill at the foot of today's North Raymond Street. In 1856, the New York Lumber Company built a steam-powered sawmill at Menekaunee. In 1853, the population was 478; by 1860 the number of people in the growing community had reached 3,059. Isaac Stephenson arrived in Marinette in 1858, became a town supervisor, county board chairman, justice of the peace, member of the state legislature, a U.S. Senator, publisher of the Milwaukee Free Press, instigated the construction of the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal, and owned an iron mine. He donated the Stephenson Public Library to the city, built the Stephenson Block, the Lauerman Brothers Department Store, and founded the Stephenson National Bank. Marinette was incorporated in 1887, and by 1900, was the tenth largest city in Wisconsin. Demographics Marinette County Forest is covered with magnificent stands of timber, approximately 231,000 acres and ranks as the 2nd largest county forest in Wisconsin. Marinette County contains 442 lakes covering 13,735 surface acres. These vary in size from 2,409 acre Lake Noquebay to small 2 acre pothole lakes. Of the 442 lakes found in Marinette County, 125 have all or some of their shoreline in public ownership. There are over 320 miles of shoreline, and 96 percent of these lakes are less than 100 acres. Marinette County contains 304 rivers and streams which encompasses an area of 4,700 acres and a total length of 920 miles. They are classified as trout water, and we have the highest number of trout streams of any county in the state of Wisconsin.
