But you would not know it looking outside and checking the thermometer! Supertrain and the Spring Meet have come and gone, so most of us start looking towards summer activities and leaving the basement for a while. But don't leave too quickly, there is still snow on the ground and we have a lot more activities on the horizon. Coming in April are the CMRS layout tours where modelers around the city graciously open their homes to display what they have accomplished over the past year. Then comes the CMRS Appreciation Night on May 12 where we properly thank all the wonderful volunteers that help throughout the year. And perhaps there may yet be some future CMRS Railfan activities to be planned. If you know of any places willing to host a tour, please get in touch with one of the board members and we will check it out! Also, one of our long established city clubs, CMT is hosting the PNR meet in May. This is not a CMRS event but we hope that Calgary modelers will still embrace the event and attend in large quantities!! Then in June comes Railway Days where a lot of CMRS clubs and individuals participate for the weekend at Heritage Park. All these train related events, complete with more information about them, can always be viewed on our website http://www.calgarymodelrailway.org/events.html. This year s attendance at all our events has been exceptional and it is nice to see there are a lot of new faces in the crowds. Enjoy the layout tours, drive carefully, take time to thank the hosts, and remember, without a strong society like CMRS, none of this would be possible. Until next time Mike Mountain Pacific Scenics Manufacturers of Tree & Shrub Foliage, Wood Bridges, Scenery Maurice Despins, C.E.T. 151 Woodfern Pl. Considering issues of security and privacy, this information only appears with the mail out Orderboard, and not on the website. Why all the PNR 6 th Division info? Because, we are all invited to register and attend The RockyView Express Spring Meet. Rather than release our membership list, we are mailing the info at their expense. We wish them a great turnout. Thank you to Jim Owen (Econolith Press) for printing our colour Orderboard covers. Again, I took the liberty to feature one of my photos. This picture was shot on a sunny morning, September 21, 2005 and shows CN power heading to Alyth to pick-up sulphur loads, which will go north on train 443. The photo location is where Deerfoot Trail overpasses the rail lines along Ogden Road. A word of caution, the property on the southeast side of the overpass is home to some large nippy dogs! How many ways can you spell Calgary? In the last issue I found 3 variations. Yes, only one was correct! Thank you to all of this month s contributors. The events list is filling out, so please let me know of any other interesting dates to add to our calendars! -Gord Page 2

CMRS Spring Mini Meet & CMT Fleamarket We had a great turnout to our annual Spring Mini Meet & CMT Flea Market. It was held on Sunday March 19 th at the Glenmore Inn. Hats off to Brooks Harrow and his crew from CMT for their hard work in coordinating this years Flea Market. There were more tables and looked like more people than in the past. On the CMRS Mini Meet side, it was busy throughout the day. Special thanks go out to our clinicians that worked hard to bring us great clinics. Calgary Free-Mo members Murray Larsen & Bill Kerr, along with other Free-mo members put on great clinics on Trees and Module Building. Jared Hoskins of the Kicking Horse Model Railway put together two great clinics. The first was re-numbering (decal work) and the second was on weathering. Both were very well attended. Leo DeGroot provided a great video clinic that entertained all that attended. We hope to see more of Leo s work in future venues. Scott Beaton provided a slide show and discussions on Garden Ponds & water features. It started with a small interruption to present Scott with a very well deserved award. Wayne Cao, member of the Alberta Legislator presented Scotty with The Alberta Centennial Medal in recognition of his dedication to community service, including his continuing service in Scouting, and in the model railroading community. ANNUAL CMT FLEAMARKET As part of the CMRS Spring Mini-Meet, Calgary Model Trainmen s Club hosted our Annual Fleamarket on Sunday, March 19th at the Glenmore Inn. 19 vendors at 23 tables offered a wide and varied selection of items in most scales. When the doors opened at 9:00 am, the room quickly filled with buyers and the vendors were kept busy throughout the morning with a steady flow of traffic. Watching the many items leaving with happy buyers, there were bargains available! The Raffle Prize this year was a locomotive, courtesy of CMT and Trains and Such who generously made five locomotives available for the morning. The winner had to choice one of the three HO-scale locomotives (Athearn CN SD40, CP AC4400 and VIA P42) or an N- scale locomotive (Atlas BCR B36-7 and Life-Like CN C424). At noon, the winning raffle ticket was drawn. Congratulations to our winner this year, Doug Cannon, who selected the CP AC4400. The other locos are back at Trains & Such and available for purchase! This is the third year CMT's Fleamarket has been held with the CMRS Spring Mini-Meet. Considering comments from venders and the quantity of buyers, both groups are pleased with this arrangement. CMT has been most pleased to participate with CMRS and we look forward to holding the Fleamarket with CMRS again at future Mini-Meets. Several big thank-yous are in order- to all the vendors who bought tables; to the many buyers who came in to make the event a success; and to Trains and Such for their support with our Raffle Prize again this year. And finally, a big thank you to Jeff Burk from CMRS for his tireless efforts and co-operation to make the whole event the success it was. The RockyView Express Calgary, Alberta May 19, 20 & 21, 2006 Have the winter blues set in? Fear not winter is almost over and spring is around the corner. And speaking of spring, we invite you to attend the NMRA- PNR 6 th Division Spring Meet in Calgary. This year s event, The RockyView Express, promises to be great! What better way to celebrate, after months working hard on your layout? Our planning committee is going all out to provide our guests with an enjoyable experience. To kick off the event on Friday evening, we are organizing a barbeque and social. Food, drink and talk are the main ingredients and should prove irresistible for all. On the modeling front, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon will have self-guided tours of some of the best layouts Calgary has to offer. We expect to have a variety of scales and modeling eras represented. Also, the usual exceptional model railroading clinics, contests and displays will be available during the day on Saturday and Sunday at our Meet venue. For the prototype enthusiast, we are working on a terrific Saturday bus tour. As the bus travels, there will be guided commentary on the development of the railways in Calgary, pointing out former significant historical railway sites of Calgary including the passenger station and roundhouse sites of the three railways that operated in Calgary, the Warehouse District, the Alberta stockyards site, the CP Alyth roundhouse site and yard, and the CP Ogden Shops area. This will be an extra fare event, including a box lunch at a photo op site. Space will be limited, so register and sign up early if you are interested. Our Meet ends with a delicious Banquet dinner at Heritage Park on Sunday, featuring a special guest speaker and awards. The Banquet will be included in the basic registration fee. You will want to go earlier for a longer visit to Heritage Park. This park is a living historical village exhibiting life in southern Alberta before 1914. It has more than 100 buildings, most of them original antique buildings moved to the Park from locations around Alberta. It also includes functioning restaurants, an oil derrick, a grain elevator, a newspaper press, and a blacksmith's shop, as well as rides on a working steam train and a paddlewheel boat. Some of the details are still being worked out - keep up-to-date and get registration information through our website www.rockyviewexpress.com See you there! Calgary Model Trainmen Club Looking for Enthusiastic Persons The RockyViewExpress Meet is looking for enthusiastic persons to participate at our Spring Meet. If you want to share your model railroading talents with others, then let us know. If you have a layout that screams Look At Me! then let us provide you with that opportunity. We are looking for layouts to include in the Layout Tours and persons to present clinics on the Victoria Day weekend in May. All you have to do is call Ed @ 998-6956 (local call), or email 1147@telus.net to get the ball rolling. Hope to hear from you!
