Santos, originally from Mexico has resided in Florida for the past 20 years. He has been the Head Grower for Redlands Orchids for the past 15 years. Santos will be presenting potting, maintenance and common diseases associated with the Cattleyas. Santos can also be reached at 305-546-2324 or by email tzumpango@aol.com for private consultations. PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Hello Fellow Orchidists! October is here already and we begin the season with a rush! October 14 th we will have a bus trip to the East Everglades Orchid Show held at RF Orchids. Twenty-five dollars covers the bus, snacks, drinks and a raffle on the return trip. The show is free! Sign up at the meeting or by calling Laurie Haarsgaard at 561-251-0903 now. October 27 th is the start of Delray s Orchid Show, always a great one. Be sure to get your tickets for this dynamite show. While you re at it, take some time for yourself. October 28 th is AOS Judging. If you ve never seen judging, this is a great opportunity. Judging starts at 2PM, but plants are on display earlier. Go the AOS Headquarters in Delray and see these exceptional blooms almost a show in itself. You are invited to watch the judging process and listen in on comments. However No Talking to Judges while the judging is taking place. Judges comments are sure to provide listeners with ideas to improve their personal collections. On lookers may observe plants being awarded HCC s or AM s, who knows. Judging is always the 4 th Saturday of the month, unless it s a holiday. Have you considered becoming more involved with your society? BROS membership is not only the beautiful people, it is also the bright and talented. All that is required is a willingness to do a little something extra. Speak with any board member and get involved! The Virginia Beach master of Sumi-e (ink painting) has had her work displayed at many prestigious institutions, and we're honored to give visitors to the AOS/VCBG a chance to see a few of her beautiful efforts. An Opening Exhibition Reception will take place on November 1, from 5:30-8pm. 2

FAKAHATCHEE SWAMP WALK DATE CHANGE!! Due to a scheduling conflict, Park Ranger, Mike Owen, has had to ask us to change our Swamp Walk date to the following day, SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2006 instead of Saturday, November 4 th. So those of you who could not sign up because of other commitments on Saturday, but do have Sunday open, here is your opportunity to see the wonders of nature---up close and personal. Cost of the trip is $15.00 for the Swamp Tour which must be paid in advance to BROS plus an additional charge of $8.00 per person to offset fuel and toll charges for each carpool driver. You will need to pack a lunch and bring a change of clothes and any snacks you might want. Extra water will be provided. More information will be given once you sign up. Don t miss this once in life-time experience, Evening with Art Moore Sets the Bar for Teamwork Through the joint efforts of the Affiliated Societies belonging to the West Palm Beach Judging Center, an entertaining, informative and fun event took place on Wednesday, September 13 th at the Safe Schools Training Institute in Boca Raton. Attendees were treated to a beautiful slide presentation and commentary on the 2006 Japan Grand Prix of Orchids by American Orchid Society President, Art Moore and a Sneak Preview of the upcoming 19 th World Orchid Conference taking place in January 2008 by Dorothy Bennett. Guests were able to purchase raffle tickets for a beautiful array of blooming and specimen orchids and bid on some exquisite auction items. Profits from the auction and raffle are being donated to the 19 th World Orchid Conference. Adding to the festive atmosphere of the evening was a fabulous refreshment table donated by members of BROS and hosted by our favorite Hospitality Committee, George and Susan Barbuty and Carol O Grady. 6
