News & Gen Report for week commencing 4 th July 2010 4 th July Firstscotrail Sleeper Diversions: Up Services The Glasgow portion of 1m11 left Glasgow at 21:39 where it travelled to Edinburgh to join the Edinburgh portion before heading to Euston via the ECML. The traction for 1m11 from Glasgow to Wembley via Edinburgh and the ECML was 90029 (again) with 90026 bringing in the empty stock as 5m11 (again); The Highland Sleeper 1m16 joined up with the Inverness, Aberdeen and Fort William portions as booked at Edinburgh before heading southwards via the ECML with 90019 providing the traction. Down Services The down Highland Sleeper (1s25) left Euston at 20:17 bound for Wembley in the first instance, then headed to the ECML via Primrose Hill and NLL incline. It is assumed that 67021 took the train to Wembley with 90021 going to Edinburgh via the NLL incline and ECML; The Glasgow/Edinburgh sleeper (1s26) left Euston at 22:32 bound for Wembley in the first instance, then headed to ECML via Primrose Hill and NLL incline. The train was dragged to Wembley by 67024 with 90035 taking the train forward to Glasgow via the NLL incline, ECML, and Edinburgh. At the start of service, the following class 90s were out: 90018 (1p13), 90008 (1p25), 90009 (1p21), 90010 (1p12), 90011 (1p17), 90015 (1p49). In addition, 90018 was meant to have done the 22:00 NRW-LST (1p67), but this was swapped with 90010 which did the train instead. 90002 at Crewe Works on G-exam 90019 at Edinburgh - allocated to 1m16 90020 at Crewe out of traffic, but needs tbc 90021 at Wembley - allocated to 1s25 90024 at Doncaster 90026 Polmodie - allocated to 5m11 90029 Polmodie - allocated to 1m11 90035 at Wembley - allocated to 1s26 90036 at Wembley on WB64 90039 at Crewe (maintenance) 90042 at Crewe (maintenance)

5 th July Royal Mail Postal 90043 at Crewe (maintenance) 90045 at Crewe (maintenance) painting Due to the failure of the booked cl.325 unit this afternoon, the 16:17 Sheildmuir to Warrington Dallam postal s (1M44) was worked by a DBS cl.90 notably 90026 which had been spare at Mossend on sleeper duties. The 90 took throughout to Warrington dragging the 12-car cl.325. This was a special moment for the cl.90s as one of these engines had not worked a Royal Mail train for a number of years. Firstscotrail Sleepers: The 'up' Glasgow/Edinburgh sleeper 1m11 operated to Wembley (via the ECML) by 90029. On arrival at Wembley 90024 was attached to the other end, and dragged it to Euston with 90029 DOR; The 'up' Highland Sleeper 1m16 operated to Wembley (via the ECML) by 90019. On arrival at Wembley 66034 was attached to the other end, and dragged it into Euston with 90019 DOR. 90003 (1p99), 90004 (1p09), 90006 (1p15), 90007 (1y01), 90008 (1p01), 90009 (1p13) 90010 (1p02) 90011 ((1p11), 90012 (1p00), 90013 (1p07) 90014 (1p03) 90015 (1p04) 90002 at Crewe on G-exam 90019 at Wembley 90020 at Crewe out of traffic 90021 at Edinburgh 90024 at Wembley - worked 1m11 to Euston 90026 at Mossend - allocated to 1m44 Royal Mail postal 90029 at Wembley 90035 at Mossend 90036 at Wembley on WB64 (am) 90039 at Crewe (maintenance) 90045 at Crewe repaint into cl.70 style livery 6 th July Today was a very busy, hectic and unusual day for the class as noted below: Royal Mail Postal s: Following yesterdays working of 90026 on 1M44, this 90 returned north from Warrington today on 6X65 as far as Mossend. On arrival at Mossend, 90026 was deployed to Shieldmuir Royal Mail terminal again, this time to work 1M03 - the 17:42 Shieldmuir to Warrington Dallam postal train dragging

cl.325 units throughout to Warrington (arriving approx 21:00). Rare Working for 90011 90011 performed 1p99 today, but instead of going to Orient Way due a farce at the sidings, the 90 performed the 09:38 London to Peterborough (1D06) as far as Ipswich where a 170 took the train forward. The 90 returned to London from Ipswich on a Lowestoft to London service (1L78). On arrival at London, 90011 then went ecs to Orient Way as booked. Other Anglia Moves: 90003 (1p24 - see below), 90004 (1y01), 90006 (1p15), 90007 (1p01), 90008 (1p02), 90010 (1p09 - see below), 90011 (1p99 - see below), 90012 (1p00), 90013 (1p03), 90014 (1p11), 90015 (1p07). Due to a technical issue with the set of stock to form 1p04 (90003), the 06:25 LST-NRW for the 09:00 NRW-LST (1p21) was formed by an 8-car cl.321. On arrival at LST off 1p21, the units were stepped down only to be replaced by 90003 back on its original diagram. In addition:- 7 th July Virgin Trains: This incident resulted in 90010 going to Ilford off 1p09 instead of Orient Way and then stepping up to 1p58 instead off 1p54 and; 90011 on 1p99 went to Orient Way as planned, but returned for the evening peak to form 1p54 instead of 1p58 (see above). 90002 at Crewe on exam (maintenance) 90019 at Mossend - allocated to 1m11 90020 at Wembley - allocated to 1s25 90021 at Wembley - allocated to 5s96 90024 at Doncaster 90026 allocated to 6X65, then to form 1M03 postal 90029 at Edinburgh - allocated to 1m16 90035 at Wembley - allocated to form 1s26 90036 at Wembley on WB64 90039 at Crewe (maintenance) C-exam 90045 at Crewe (maintenance) painting - expected ok 9th July 90036 was stabled at Wembley on WB64 spare. 90006 (1p00), 90007 (1p01), 90010 (1p04), 90011 (1y01). Nothing else known for today.

8 th July Virgin Trains: 90002 at Crewe on exam 90019 at Wembley - allocated to 1s25 90020 at Edinburgh - allocated to 1m16 90021 at Wembley - allocated to 5s96 then to Crewe for Exam 90024 on ECML driver training 90026 worked 6X65 again today then allocated to 1c11 & 1b26 90029 at Wembley - allocated to 5s95 for 1s26 90035 at Mossend - allocated to 1m11 90036 at Wembley on WB64 90039 at Crewe exam (maintenance complete) - allocated to 6L48 90045 at Crewe being painted - expected ok now 12th July 90036 on hire to Virgin Trains using WB64 at Wembley (spare). Where to start on this one - OHLE damage near Norwich created much chaos for much of the morning peak. It is difficult to give a concise account of what was cancelled, terminated short of destination etc. I can report that 90007 which was at Orient Way for 1p04, but remained there all day only coming out to play on 1p54 (18:00 LST-NRW). In addition due to loco-hauled stock being stranded at Norwich, a number of cl.321s were deployed to Norwich-London services for the entire days operations although 90001 in affect killed a set of units by forming 1p63 (20:00 NRW-LST). if she returned on 1p70 (22:30 LST-NRW) is not known due to a fire breaking out at Liverpool Street causing it to close just after 22:00hrs. Known 90s to have been out in amongst the chaos were 90001, 90003, 90004, 90005, 90009, 90010, 90011, 90012, 90013, and 90014 - concise diagrams etc are unknown. The day finished in chaos on the GEML just like the morning (as suggested above) with a fire breaking out on the Liverpool Street concourse resulting in the station being closed - I understand that 1p72 (23:30 LST-NRW) was started at Stratford, 1p65 (21:00 NRW-LST) was terminated at Stratford, but not sure what happened to 1p67 (22:00 NRW-LST) - its assumed to have terminated at Stratford as Liverpool Street was still in chaos. 90002 at Crewe on maintenance 90019 at Edinburgh off 1s25 90020 at Wembley

9 th July Virgin Trains: 90021 at Crewe (maintenance) 90024 on ECML driver training 90026 at Mossend 90029 at Mossend 90035 at Wembley 90036 on hire to VWC 90039 at Wembley 90045 at Crewe for painting - expected ok 12th July The Virgin Trains MK3 set was out today on the West Coast. It worked the driver training run to Northampton and then performed the 18:46 Euston to Preston (1p05). Traction was provided by 90036 The operations of services on the GEML by NXEA were chaotic today and it is difficult to give concise details on what happened. However, I can report the following: The DVT on the 17:00 LST-NRW (1p46) failed with 90007 on the rear, which was rescued by Colchester thunder bird, 47802. We also had 90001, 90003, 90004, 90005, 90007, 90009, 90010, 90011, 90012, 90013, 90014, and 90015 all out in traffic. In addition, 90018 as well as 90008 were at Crown Point. 10 th July Scotrail Sleeper: 90002 at Crewe on maintenance 90019 at Wembley - allocated to 1s26 90020 at Mossend - allocated to 1m11 90021 at Wembley - allocated to Crewe for maintenance 90024 on the ECML - driver training 90026 at Mossend - allocated to 1c11, then worked 1m16 (100mins late) after 90039 suffered a technical issue 90029 at Wembley - allocated to 1s25 90035 at Crewe on maintenance 90039 at Edinburgh - should of worked 1m16, but suffered a broken headlight (90026 did 1m16 instead) 90045 at Crewe for painting expected ok 12th July The Up Highland Sleeper 1M16 arrived Euston approx. 100mins late due to 90039 suffering a headlight fault at Edinburgh. Therefore 1m16 had to wait for 90026 to return from Carstairs after she worked the portions (1C11) an hour or so earlier. 1M16 was taken to Euston by 90026, leaving 90039 behind to be fixed.

Day 3 of shambolic chaos on the GEML for NXEA although not as extensive as the previous 2 days. The loco-hauled operations to/from Yarmouth were: 5v29 for 1v29 (10:08 GYM-LST) -90010 1v18 for 1v41 (10:00 LST-GYM for 13:10 GYM-LST) 90009 1v26 (12:00 LST-GYM) this should have gone back ecs to Crown Point as 5v26, but it worked a service train instead (90005) Also out today were 90001 (1P01), 90018 (1p03), 90004 (1p05), 90007, 90011 (1p13), 90012, 90003 (1p02), 90006 (1p09), 90005 (1p06). Finally 90008 could be found undergoing maintenance at Crown Point and 90015 were at Harwich for the weekend. 90002 at Crewe (maintenance) 90019 at Mossend 90020 at Wembley 90021 at Crewe (maintenance) 90024 at Wembley 90026 at Wembley 90029 at Edinburgh 90035 at Crewe (maintenance) 90036 on hire to VWC 90039 at Mossend 90043 at Crewe following an earlier failure 90045 at Crewe (maintenance) expected ok 12th July 90049 stabled at Ipswich for weekend
