By taking part in our Mount Kilimanjaro Challenge, you will be fundraising to support our existing Tanzanian programmes and your money can go a long way to help. For example, did you know that just: 10 could help buy 4 chickens to assist a family or group in rural Tanzania to begin a small poultry-raising project. 20 100 250 can buy 20 packets of vegetable seeds for poor farmers. can train 40 children on good health and hygiene practices so that they can pass on this knowledge to other schoolchildren and their families at home. can construct a small-scale irrigation channel in a Tanzanian village. WHAT IS YOUR CHALLENGE Mt Kilimanjaro, Africa s highest mountain, is a magnet for trekkers and climbers the world over. This challenging trek takes us along the beautiful Machame route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the south, through dense tropical rainforest all the way up to the mighty snow capped summit at 5896m for simply breathtaking views. This is a tough but spectacularly rewarding route. On reaching the summit you will feel a sense of overwhelming achievement, a truly unforgettable challenge. DAY 1: DUBLIN TO TANZANIA Depart Dublin in the mid afternoon for Tanzania. DAY 2: ARRIVE IN TANZANIA Arrive in Kilimanjaro International Airport in the mid afternoon. Transfer to our hotel in Arusha and then relax for the evening. Have an expedition brief before dinner. DAY 3: MACHAME CAMP - 3000M After breakfast we meet the local guides and drive for just over an hour to Machame gate (1490m). At the gate we register with the National Park and then meet our team of porters. Once we start walking its not long before we enter the tropical rain forest. Depending on how much rain there has been the trail can be quite muddy. After some time we stop for lunch and then continue to Machame camp in the afternoon. By the time we reach the campsite the porters will already have set up your tent and the cook will be preparing dinner. Most people are quite tired after the first days walk so we advise an early night. n 7hrs Trekking DAY 4: SHIRA CAMP - 3840M Following an early breakfast we take a steep trail out of Machame camp. After one hour we emerge from the forest clearing the tree line. From here its a more gentle trail to the Shira plateau. We stop for plenty of rests and photos throughout the day. We are rewarded with great views of the western breach with its stunning glaciers. We set up camp in the early afternoon and relax for the rest of the day. After watching the sun set and a filling dinner we head to bed. n 6hrs Trekking DAY 5: BARRANCO CAMP - 3950M We leave Shira camp and walk east towards Lava Tower a huge rocky outcrop. After five hours of walking along a rocky trail we have lunch just before Lava Tower, allowing us extra time at this higher altitude. By walking to Lava Tower we reach 4630m before walking back down to Barranco Camp. This jump in elevation greatly helps us with acclimatisation and is key to a successful summit attempt. After lunch we descend 680m and we camp below the Barranco Wall. Today s route has stunning views throughout. n 7hrs Trekking DAY 6: KARANGA CAMP - 4000M The day starts by walking up and over the Barranco Wall which is not quite as hard as it looks! Upon reaching the top we are rewarded with great views of Kilimanjaro, the Heim glacier and the surrounding landscape. The trail then enters the Karanga Valley with many short ascents and descents as we cross many small streams. We set up camp just after the Karanga River. Spend the afternoon relaxing and chatting to fellow trekkers, guides and porters. n 5hrs Trekking

DAY 7: BARAFU CAMP - 4600M After breakfast we walk along a ridge towards Barafu camp. We set an easy pace to ensure good acclimatisation. As we gain altitude the landscape becomes completely barren and free of vegetation, a quite inhospitable environment. We reach Barafu in the early afternoon and set up camp. Because of the elevation this campsite is colder than previous camps but the views are amazing. We spend the afternoon resting, eating and preparing for tomorrows summit day. n 5hrs Trekking DAY 8: SUMMIT NIGHT - 5896M We rise very early usually around 12:00 am, have some tea and snacks and start walking. We keep a steady pace as we walk on steep scree to reach Stella Point (5685m). For many trekkers this walk is the toughest section of the day. We take a short rest at Stella Point to enjoy the sunrise. From Stella Point it is a further two hours on an often snow covered route to reach Mt Kilimanjaro (5896m)! All the effort is well worth it as the feeling of being on the roof of Africa is second to none! After a short stay at the summit we start the descent to Mweka Camp. After three hours we reach Barafu camp and enjoy a rest and some food. We then walk for a further five hours to reach Mweka camp in the upper rain forest. For those with energy left there is beer available at a nearby hut to celebrate this great day. n 15hrs Trekking DAY 9: ARUSHA After a hot breakfast we walk downhill for three hours and finish our trek and Mweka Gate. From the gate we drive back to Arusha and enjoy a well earned hot shower. The rest of the day is spent resting tired bodies by the pool. In the evening enjoy a celebratory meal and some drinks at the hotel. n 3hrs Trekking DAY 10: DEPART TANZANIA After a good sleep and a tasty breakfast spend the morning relaxing or exploring Arusha. After lunch we transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for an afternoon departure. DAY 11: ARRIVE IN DUBLIN

Rain brings clean water to Kabanga Primary School CASE STUDY Majalewa Stevin is the head teacher of Kabanga Primary, a school for 824 children in Ngara, western Tanzania. Like all schools in this poor and isolated district, Kabanga Primary could not offer water to its pupils. The nearest water source is over one hour away. We asked the children to bring water from their homes for cleaning and for drinking explains Mr. Stevin. If the school is dirty we can t continue with classes. But it was not compulsory and many children didn t bring it. They did without. Digging a well at the school was not possible, because the area is hilly and water table is low. So in order to get clean water for the children, Concern and its partners, working with the parents and the teachers, constructed a 50,000 litre tank to collect rainwater as it falls from the roof. Known as Rainwater Harvesting, this is a cost-effective way to supply clean water to schools that would otherwise not have water facilities. The cost is 4,500 for one tank, compared to around 7,000 to drill a well. The team also built a toilet block, with two smaller 1,500 litre tanks collecting rainwater from the roof for hand washing. The children s attendance has increased and the teachers say their concentration has improved says Mr. Stevin. Through the presence of water in the school, and promoting god hygiene, we can see that the sickness levels are decreasing. And the teachers have more time to prepare lessons as they know the water is here, and they don t need to go off to fetch it, or worry about the children s absence. The benefits are unmistakable. Zinath Aziz, 14, (left) and Evestina Geofrey, (12) are members of the Child to Child (C2C) group in Kabanga Primary School, whose role it is to promote good hygiene practices amongst the children, and communities. Zinath is the C2C group chairperson.
