Chapter Directors Corner June is here and the sun finally appeared!! Woo Hoo!! Last month we held the very first Combined Chapter Gathering, and it was very successful. Beside members from Chapter G and Chapter I we had 8 reps from other chapters for a total of 40 people. Cindy and I want to personally thank Bijou and Mike White for cooking and serving our breakfast, best deal for $7.00 I ve had in awhile. Trent and I are in discussion to do this a couple of times a year, if we can. June is a very special month for us this year, as we will be celebrating Chapter I s 30th Birthday as a chartered chapter in GWRRA. This is quite a deal to be active in GWRRA for this long. We even still have some of the original charter members around. We want everyone to join us for lunch in The Dalles at Cousins Restaurant for our Birthday Gathering and ride. Come on 2, 3 or 4 wheels!! July we will be meeting for the last time at Wichita Pub and Grill. As our attendance has become smaller at meetings, the Staff made the decision to make some changes. We will begin meeting at Megan s Corner at the United Methodist Church in Oregon City in August. The address is: 18955 South End Rd. Oregon City, OR. The new meeting time will be 9:30am. We will have a short informational meeting, with Coffee and/or Juice provided by the chapter, then we will head out on a ride or activity that will enable us to have some fun and lunch along the way. Some folks, myself included do not adapt well to change, but I think that this may help our chapter renew itself. Speaking on this point, I think that everyone should know that our chapter is diminishing, in that membership has declined due to folks not renewing. In one month we had 12 members not renew due to not riding anymore, inability to ride, family issues, health etc. Active membership has decreased a lot. And we are suffering from the same issue as other chapters around the country, our membership is getting older. In light of this, now more than ever, we want to try and bring younger blood into our midst, by making sure that riders are welcome, no matter what people ride. And folks who cannot ride anymore are still welcome to drive along with us. So please invite others to come along. With all of that said, I hope that we will see more of our chapter members at the Oregon District Rally at Silver Lake later this month. And please get ready and spread the word about this years End of the Trail Ride in July. See the attached flyer!! Till next month! Ride safe and keep the rubberside down! Alan & Cindy
TAKING THE SHORTCUT When we first moved from South East Portland to the out skirts of Sandy, I wanted to find the quickest and fastest routes for my wife and I to use to go to and from work each day. So, as time and weather permitted, we would take a different way to work or a different way home in search of the best routes, alternative routes and the upcoming winter routes. Most of the time my travelling preference was the Goldwing. Sometime however, a road that is enjoyable on a motorcycle may not be that enjoyable in a car. Especially if you get car sick as easily as I do. Well I am happy to say we each found our favorite routes to our work and home. We each have more than one alternative route for those days that require such and we also have various winter routes we use depending on the severity of the weather. Then we have. what I like to call the shortcut. Let s break that down, short-not long, cut-to remove. Sounds simple, right? Sounds short, too right? Well let s just say in my world shortcut has nothing to do with short or removing anything like time or distance. Oh no, no, no. Shortcut for me is saying I am going to take this road and see where it goes. Some might say that sounds a lot like being lost. But lost to me is a four-letter word that I do not associate with motorcycles and riding. Now sometimes that might mean I have to backtrack some but that is just part of the fun. Sometimes it puts me on roads that I add to my ever-growing list of must do again and again roads. There have also been those times when I have had to stop and call my wife to say that I took a shortcut and I m not sure where I am or how long it is going to take me, but I will be home once I figure it out. Years ago, a friend of mine and I would take off after work and just pick a direction and then go ride in that direction. For the most part our day of choice was Thursday. I cannot remember why. Since we worked for the same company, we would just leave after work and ride off enjoying the moment. We found a lot of great roads and a lot of roads to nowhere. You could say we took a lot of Shortcuts. We no longer work together and he since has moved away. However, we both continue to ride and take our own Shortcut rides when we can. I do not think we are alone in enjoying Shortcuts when we ride. I just road in my first Right Turn Ride put on by Chapter G in Salem. Nice going folks, you put together a very nice ride. Since I was by myself, I took the opportunity to join several different groups of riders for the various legs of the ride. It was interesting to see other groups and how they rode together. I also noticed that several of them took the liberty of enjoying a few of their own Shortcuts along the way. I have seen the same on most group rides I have been on or involved with. Shortcuts seem to go hand in hand with motorcycles of all types and sizes and their riders. Who knows maybe Shortcuts we made just for us? When was the last time you took a shortcut? Do you have a favorite shortcut? Are you ready for your next shortcut? Just be sure not to take any shortcuts when it comes to safety, yours and the others you are with or meet along the way. Until next time, take care and be safe out there. By Ervin L. Reichert-GWRRA Chapter I Ride Educator
Members Corner Ever get caught in the rain while riding? How well did your jacket keep the water out? I had the pleasure of riding with friends the other day and yes it started raining on us in the morning and seemed to rain all day long. Even though I managed to stay dry for the most part, I found my jacket weighed quite a bit more by the time I got home. I had never tried to rewater proof my jacket so I emailed the manufacture and asked what they recommended. They came back with NIKWAX. I am going to wash my jacket and give this product a try. Do you have a favorite product you use? Heard a good joke lately? Have a favorite place to eat? this section is for you. Please share something with us.
