Post 9/11 GI Bill Coverage of Flight Course Fees Western Michigan University Undergraduate Catalog Addendum Original Issuance: October 30, 2015 Revised: June 1, 2018; effective with Fall 2018 flight course fees All university courses that include a flight training component have a flight fee associated with the course. These flight course fees are established by the College of Aviation and approved by the Provost. When the College of Aviation establishes these fees, the college calculates the expected hours of use for aircraft, simulator and instructional time and multiplies the expected hours by the approved hourly rate for the assigned resources. Also included within the course fees are funds to cover mandatory fees such as required supplies and drug testing and funds to cover miscellaneous expenses such as optional pilot supplies and FAA knowledge exam fees. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Post 9/11 GI Bill will cover flight course fees, in accordance with the bill s provisions and the individual veteran s benefits, but only to the extent to cover the minimum required hours of training and any mandatory fees. Since the university s flight fees are calculated on expected hours, rather than minimum, and also includes funds to cover optional miscellaneous expenses, the entire flight course fee cannot be submitted to the VA for payment consideration. All students who enroll in flight courses will have the entire university flight course fee charged to their account. Those veterans, or their qualified dependents, which are using Post 9/11 benefits to cover flight course fees will then have a portion of the flight course fee submitted to the VA for payment consideration. The portion of the course fee is based on the minimum required hours of training, the resource hourly rates and mandatory fees. The following shows what total flight fees will be submitted to the VA for payment consideration. The actual payment amount from the VA will depend on the veteran s eligibility level. The veteran is responsible for any difference between the university flight fee and the VA s coverage of the fee.
