C enex Kidston Connection Project 132 8.0 8.1 xisting nvironment Protected areas represent those areas protected for the conservation of natural and cultural values at a Commonwealth, State and ocal level. Protected areas also include areas managed for production of forest resources, including timber and quarry material. his section does not discuss Indigenous and on-indigenous cultural heritage places. iscussion on these is provided in Chapter 16 Indigenous Cultural Heritage and Chapter 17 on-indigenous Cultural Heritage respectively. Protected areas within 10 km of the raft lignment were identified through a review of publically available desktop information, including the following databases: epartment of nvironment and nergy Protected atters Search ool State Planning Policy 2017 (SPP and SPP atters of State nvironmental Significance apping atabase Queensland overnment protected areas databases supplied through Queensland lobe ulf evelopment Plan 2000 (a non-statutory Plan ocal Planning Instruments for Hinchinbrook Council, Charters owers Council and theridge Council. he orth Queensland Plan is currently being prepared by the Queensland overnment, and has not been included within this assessment. It is anticipated that any protected areas identified in the Plan will also be found in the above desktop information for the raft lignment. he raft lignment does not traverse any existing protected areas. he protected areas which have been identified in proximity to the raft lignment are listed in able 8-1 from west to east along the alignment, and shown in Figure 8-1. able 8-1 in proximity of the raft lignment ame ype overning egislation Proximity to raft lignment ewcastle ange he aks ature efuge SS Protected rea (nature refuges 2.6 km north east irringun 350 m north iefway ature efuge SS Protected rea (nature refuges 1.6 km north north east annercost State Forest State Forest Forestry ct 1959 3.5 km north east ange View ature efuge SS Protected rea (nature refuges 10 km north east Poison ake ly Important Wetland / (irectory of Important Wetlands in ustralia 10 km north Wet ropics of Queensland World Heritage Property atters of nvironmental Significance nvironment Protection and Biodiversity ct 1999 World Heritage ist 1988 3.5 km north east (overlaps annercost State Forest evision 1 21-Sep-2018 Prepared for Powerlink Queensland B: 82078849233

C enex Kidston Connection Project 133 ame ype overning egislation Proximity to raft lignment Wet ropics of Queensland Heritage Place atters of nvironmental Significance nvironment Protection and Biodiversity ct 1999 Heritage ist 2007 3.5 km north east he irringun is 277,868 ha in size and spans through three local government areas, including ablelands Council, Cassowary Cost Council and Hinchinbrook Council. he eastern section of the raft lignment is near ount Fox which is part of the. ount Fox is a dormant volcanic cone, and is holds tourism and visitor opportunities. track is present which allows visitors to climb to the summit of the volcanic cone, providing views of the crater and surrounding area. Further details on visual and landscape values of this area are discussed in Chapter 14 Visual menity. 8.2 Potential Impacts he raft lignment for the transmission line and substation locations does not affect any protected areas identified in able 8-1. he nearest identified protected area is the irringun, approximately 350 m north of the raft lignment at the eastern (ount Fox end. ll other identified protected areas are located greater than 1.5 km from the raft lignment. Potential impacts on protected areas are therefore anticipated to be limited to minor and indirect impacts on irringun associated with noise, dust and visual amenity. ust emissions may arise from earthworks, construction of structures and access track usage. he qualitative air quality risk assessment undertaken in Chapter 6 ir Quality determined that the unmitigated air emissions from the construction phase of the Project pose a low risk of dust soiling impacts. missions associated with the construction are expected to be localised to the immediate area and only present for a short period of time per work area. Construction noise sources will include light vehicles and machinery for vegetation clearing, access track construction, structure foundations, and helicopters for transmission line stringing. Based on the construction noise assessment undertaken in Chapter 19 oise and Vibration, construction noise impacts from vehicles and machinery is anticipated to be negligible beyond the southern boundary of irringun. Helicopter use in proximity to the will be short term for both construction activities and transmission line maintenance, and overall noise impacts on the are therefore anticipated to be negligible. he summit of ount Fox within irringun, is located approximately 1 km to the north of the nearest Project structure. he visual impact assessment undertaken in Chapter 14 Visual menity, identified that, although there will be noticeable change due to the close proximity of this scenic viewpoint, there will be no change to the fundamental visual character of the landscape and the structures will blend with the existing view to a considerable extent. It is also noted that irringun (600-800 m elevation is higher in elevation than the Project corridor (600-620 m elevation, therefore the Project is not anticipated to have a hydrological impact on the. evision 1 21-Sep-2018 Prepared for Powerlink Queensland B: 82078849233

C enex Kidston Connection Project 134 8.3 itigation and anagement easures he Project will not directly impact on a protected area, and indirect impacts on irringun, such as dust deposition and noise, are anticipated to be short term and of negligible significance. Standard mitigation measures, as provided in ppendix I nvironmental anagement Plans, will be implemented to minimise potential dust and noise impacts on protected areas, including the following. ctive management of dust emissions, such as restriction of vehicle speeds, application of dust suppressants or watering, and the covering of loads for transport to and from work sites. Standard environmental controls for noise management such as limiting working hours, fitting machinery with appropriate noise attenuation devises and shutting down equipment when not in use. evision 1 21-Sep-2018 Prepared for Powerlink Queensland B: 82078849233
