YOUNG ENGLAND AND WALES Lancaster 15 18 October

YOUNG ENGLAND AND WALES Demand for places on the Young England and Wales Programme has been so high this year that, uniquely, we have added a third England and Wales event to our calendar! An autumn programme will take place in Lancaster in October. As always, our core aims are to develop communication skills, build confidence, and broaden the intellectual horizons of people in the early years of their careers. Developing new talent Although the minimum age is 18, there is no upper age limit: delegates may be young in years, or in terms of professional development, or both. People who have come late to a career, for example, are positively encouraged irrespective of age. The award-winning discussion group at the Spring 2018 Young England and Wales Programme As in all of our events, a central part of the course is the presentation by each delegate of a 900-word paper ( Argument ) on a topic of the delegate's choice of current interest or controversy. Researched, written and submitted in advance, the paper is delivered during the event. Our coaches provide useful advice in a written briefing before the programme and then in rehearsal before the papers are presented. And there s much more, including: v guest speakers sharing their extraordinary life experiences in the Testimony sessions v the Group Challenge in which delegates are divided into small discussion groups, allocated a topic, and given a short time to prepare an informal presentation v On the Spot, in which delegates ask themselves a question on a topic of their own choice and then answer it without notes in as close to two minutes as possible v and Yes, No, Don't Know, a major debate on a big issue of the day The entire event adds up to a rich and unique experience. Everyone who completes the course will receive a certificate in recognition of an outstanding achievement. In addition, based mainly on the Argument paper, the title England and Wales Young Thinker of the Year 2018 (shared with the winners at the spring and summer programmes) will be awarded to a delegate on the final evening. There will also be an award for Best Group in the Group Challenge. See page 4 for just some of the organisations which took part in Young Programme events in 2017 2

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED How does the programme benefit our delegate and our organisation? The venue is Lancaster House Hotel on the campus of Lancaster University in Lancashire (Green Lane, Ellel, Lancaster LA1 4GJ). Lancaster House is close to the M6 and around 10 minutes by taxi from Lancaster railway station on the main west coast line. Registration is in the afternoon of Monday 15 October. Delegates will check-out after breakfast on Thursday 18 October. Who s eligible? People aged 18 or over who live and work in England or Wales, and who are considered by their employers to be in the early stages of their careers. There is no upper age limit.
