School Crossings Victoria

Introduction Road Safety is a great concern to the whole community. People such as the Police, Fire Brigades, Councils and their Enforcement Officers all play a part in ensuring the safety of our community. With our children, School Crossing Supervisors are the frontline, and therefore play the most important role in keeping our children safe.

What is SCV School Crossings Victoria is a group of Council representatives and other interested parties. The purpose of this association is to promote safety and seek uniformity of the operation of school crossings, training and equipment throughout Victoria

History School Crossings Victoria Inc commenced in 2002. As one of the largest school crossing programs in Victoria, Casey faced many issues and challenges and to explore some of those issues and provide support for each other, Casey invited neighbouring municipalities to a south-east coordinators meeting.

History Networking began immediately. Municipalities from around Victoria wanted to be involved, as there was a need for consistency and uniformity, Victoria wide.

History In 2005, after an investigation into uniform standards by Worksafe, municipalities involved in School Crossings Victoria stood united in their belief that School Crossing Supervisors play a vital role in children s road safety and therefore needed an identity and created the current high visibility uniform seen around Victoria today.

Objective Uniformity and consistency in the management and behaviour of school crossing supervisors throughout the State Increase the level of support from Government agencies to help us achieve this A united and whole approach Create a professional image of supervisors

History School Crossings Victoria became incorporated in 2006 and have many more goals to achieve. To do this, we need all municipalities throughout Victoria, to become members.

Achievements DVD Cross Safe Stay Safe A guide for new school crossing supervisors A brochure on why school crossings are so important 2009 we surveyed over 1000 SCS s to get the top 5 bad behaviours of drivers, crossing users and other supervisors

Achievements Promoted school crossings through a stall at the RoadSafe conference Worked with the state government to include School Crossing Supervisors in the Shine advertisements Conducted training throughout the State Established School Crossings Victoria as the primary source of information on school crossings in Victoria Developed policies on inclement weather and supervisor behaviour

Meetings Meetings are held bi monthly rotating between member Councils We now have 7 regions based on the numbers of crossings throughout the State Introduced a School Crossing Supervisor of the Year Award to raise the profile of School Crossing Supervisors and also to recognise them on a job well done

SCS of the Year Award The recipient of the award should model enthusiasm and successful outcomes. This award is open to all school crossing supervisors employed in this role stationed at a permanent crossing or a relief school crossing supervisor. Nominations received for the award must be for people employed as a school crossing supervisor at any Victorian Council who should demonstrate

SCS Award Criteria Professional demeanour and presentation (uniform and equipment) Working knowledge of road rules relating to school crossings Welcoming, caring, supportive and encouraging to all users of the school crossing Helpful Informative and clear on correct use of the crossing Involvement in the school community Attendance no time off (other than illness) Punctuality

Future Goals Create a training manual to compliment the DVD Consolidate the regional groups Continue the SCS of the Year award Create a photo library Continue to lobby for a statewide co ordinator or management committee Create further policies to be used as guidelines for member councils

Future Goals Subcommittee established to look at the 40km around school zones Why are remote school crossings not included Schools that finish before 2.30pm what will be our stand on this

Future Goals Information received in relation to the survey of supervisors we hope to make a priorities calendar to send to all schools within the state Focusing on educating drivers and users of crossings on different issues for the term in relation to safety
