Tour Program Meals included B=breakfast D=dinner Friday Our Adventure Begins Check in at the airport for the overnight flight across the Atlantic Next stop: London! (D-in flight) Saturday Hello, London! We ve arrived at the Heathrow Airport where, following customs formalities, we ll meet our local guide and driver and transfer into the capital of England and the United Kingdom. We ll drop our luggage off at the hotel and walk via the Marble Arch and along Hyde Park to Buckingham Palace. We re here to witness the impressive and colorful Changing of the Guards. Next on our agenda is our first experience on London s famous Tube on our way to the Tower of London. Built by William the Conqueror, the Tower has served variously as a palace, treasure house and prison. After a briefing on the layout of the Tower, we ll be free to explore independently. In the late afternoon, we ll return to the hotel to check in. For dinner tonight, we ll choose from the variety of nearby restaurants. (B-In flight, D) Sunday Church, Royalty & Ghosts We ll start each day with a full English breakfast at the hotel. Then today a morning walk takes us via Piccadilly, Green Park and St. James Park to Westminster Abbey. We will attend the 10:00 a.m. Matins service in this magnificent church, coronation site of Queen Elizabeth and centuries of her predecessors, as well as final resting place of many English sovereigns and prominent citizens. After worship, we re going to take the train out to Windsor. This town, as you probably know, gave its name to the Royal Family; and Windsor Castle is the largest and oldest still-inhabited castle in the world. After time to get a snack or some lunch, we ll walk through the castle precincts and visit the beautifully-furnished state apartments, Queen Mary s Dolls House and St. George s Chapel. We ll return to our hotel, and this evening we ll enjoy a walking tour through parts of London that are reputed to be haunted. A professional actor will regale us with eerie stories from bygone days or are they?! We ll stop for dinner on our way to or from our ghost walk. (B, D) Monday Biking, Bowling & Antiquities We ll start our day off with some exercise Equipped with bicycles and helmets, we re going to pedal around London. In the company of a professional bicycle tour guide, we ll get acquainted with the city s numerous monuments and architectural masterpieces and many of its out-of-the-way corners. In the afternoon, we re going to the British Museum, stopping en route or at one of the museum s cafés for lunch. Begun in 1753, this treasure house has grown to include artifacts from all corners of the world some 8 million items in all. After a briefing on the museum s highlights and a short tour, we ll be free to look around independently. On our agenda for tonight? Bowling at the All Star Lanes! Tuesday Literary London Today we ll meet two of the most renowned English writers of all time! Let s begin with the beloved novelist Charles Dickens who gave us Oliver Twist, Scrooge and so many other memorable characters. At the Charles Dickens Museum, located in his only surviving London home, we ll see rare manuscripts and mementos and we ll learn about his life. At midday, we ll have lunch at one of the nearby ethnic restaurants. Then we ll head for Bankside where we ll go behind the scenes at Shakespeare s Globe Theatre. We ll learn about William Shakespeare s life, the London of his day and the iconic theatre for which he wrote. After time for dinner at Pizza Express or another nearby Bankside eatery, we ll see a production at the Globe. (B, D) Wednesday Education, Art & Music Exploring on the way, we ll head for the London District Christian Secondary School this morning. We ll have a tour of the school and learn its approach to Christian education. Over lunch, we ll get better acquainted with our English contemporaries and learn more about their lives. We plan to spend part of the afternoon at the National Gallery, which houses an incredible collection of paintings representing virtually every great European school of art. An introductory tour is followed by time to browse on our own. Then we ll head to Trafalgar Square for some free time. We ll meet at St. Martin-in-the-Fields, first for dinner at one of the cafés and then for a lovely candlelight concert. (B, D) Thursday Celebrities in Wax, Shopping & Theatre It s our last full day in London and we plan to use it well! First off, we ll walk to Madame Tussaud s where we ll see a huge collection of remarkably life-like wax models famous and infamous historical figures, the Royal Family and the who s who of sports, entertainment, politics and more. Then we re off to do some shopping in and around Oxford Street, one of the world s top shopping addresses. After time to freshen up at the hotel, we ll head for the West End where we ll have dinner and attend a popular musical or dramatic production. (B, D) Friday Heading Home After an early breakfast we ll be met and transferred back to Heathrow to check in for our return flights.
