GORILLA TREKS VIEW THE LAST OF THE EARTH S GREAT APES IN THEIR NATIVE ENVIRONMENT ON GORILLA TREKS WITH ULTIMATE EXPEDITIONS. OUR EXPERIENCED SAFARI GUIDES WILL TAKE YOU DEEP INTO THE JUNGLE HIGHLANDS FOR CLOSE ENCOUNTERS WITH THE MOUNTAIN GORILLA.

UGANDA SUMMARY Uganda and Rwanda are unique countries, nestled in Africa s Great Rift Valley. The mountain gorillas, of which there are only about 800 left, roam freely here. Mountain gorillas can only be seen in the wild. RWANDA The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest of Uganda and the Virunga Mountains, which straddle the borders of Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, are the only remaining places where mountain gorillas exist. Both are designated as national parks and are patrolled by rangers to protect the last of the critically endangered species. Not to be forgotten are Uganda s many wildlife parks, which offer an alluring safari destination for Big Five game viewing in pristine forests, shimmering lakes and stunning mountains. IS THIS TRIP FOR YOU? Uganda and Rwanda offer adventures that cannot be experienced anywhere else. Whether you visit solely for gorilla trekking or to enjoy a wildlife safari in the Pearl of Africa, our varied itineraries from 3 to 9 days can fit any budget and accommodate any schedule. OUR GUIDES Ultimate Expeditions guides, who are fluent in English, lead our trips in the region. All of our guides are experts in the industry with many years of experience. They have been hand-selected by us from among local communities to bring you the most authentic travel experiences. As natives who love Uganda and Rwanda, they want nothing more than to ensure that your time with us is safe, fun, and memorable. OUR ACCOMMODATIONS Our standard accommodations for our trips are in the midrange category. We have chosen hotels which offer the best value for the service without being overly humble or unnecessarily wellappointed. For more particular clients, we do have alternative stay options ranging from budget to luxury.

WEATHER IN UGANDA AND RWANDA Uganda and Rwanda are equatorial countries, boasting warm temperatures and sunny skies throughout the year. Their spring-like climates mean one can comfortably visit all year round. However, temperatures can vary greatly across the land, depending on the region and geography. Between 20 to 100 inches of rain can fall in a year. Even the dry season may bring storm clouds, so come prepared for quick shifts in the weather. The wettest months are April and May and October through December. Gorilla trekking happens at higher elevations, which are cooler than the lowlands. Moreover, the rainforests are often wet. It is important to be prepared with waterproof gear as well as a variety of warm weather clothes. The prettiest months are January and February, as well as June through September. However, these are also the busiest months. Choose your time to visit depending on what you value more: nicer weather or fewer visitors. MONTH TEMPERATURE PRECIPITATION CLOUDINESS CROWDS January February March April May June July August September October November December GEAR LIST Clients must be prepared for all types of weather no matter when they visit. Clients are responsible for bringing personal gear. Below is a list of suggested gear. MOUNTAIN GORILLAS Mountain gorillas are located in high altitudes in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest of Uganda, and in the Virunga Mountains on the borders of the Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Only 800 mountain gorillas are alive today, a result of vigilant protection efforts by governments. There are no mountain gorillas in zoos; they do not survive in captivity. Mountain gorillas are social animals, living together in small groups, though some families can be as large as 30 individuals. Each family is usually comprised of a dominant adult male, several adult females, young males and females, and their offspring. Gorillas are very intelligent creatures that exhibit human emotions. Though the physical power of gorillas is obvious, gorillas are gentle and even shy primates. Gorillas are mainly herbivores. They eat a variety of plants, including roots, shoots, bark and pulp. They also eat fruits and invertebrates. They spend about six hours a day eating. The life span of mountain gorillas in the wild is 25 to 30 years. GORILLA TREKKING Gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda allows visitors to observe gorilla families. A group of rangers, consisting of guides and trackers, coordinate their efforts to locate the gorillas. The rangers monitor the gorillas movements on a daily basis and take the visitors to them. The hikes start in the morning with a briefing at park headquarters about what the trek will involve. Most of the hiking is on established trails that lead to the general proximity of the gorillas. To get close to the gorillas, we will hike off trail, often in wet, muddy areas, on steep slopes and through thick vegetation. The treks can be strenuous, so a reasonable level of fitness is required. The treks start in the morning and can take anywhere from 2 to 8 hours, depending on the location of the gorillas. To avoid disruption to their natural behavior, our time with the gorillas is limited to one hour. RULES FOR GORILLA TREKKING» Keep a distance of approximately 25 feet from the gorillas» People with communicable diseases are not allowed to participate» Stay in tight group when near the gorillas» Keep your voices down at all times» Do not eat or drink while you are near the gorillas» Flash photography is not permitted» Children below the age of 15 are prohibited» Sometimes the gorillas charge - follow the guide s example (which is to crouch down slowly, do not look the gorillas directly in the eyes and wait for the animals to pass), do not run.

CHIMPANZEES Chimpanzees are our closest living relatives, sharing an estimated 98% of their genes with humans. Millions of chimps existed in Africa just 50 years ago. The estimated population of wild chimpanzees today is between 200,000 to 250,000 individuals. The remaining chimpanzees are located in forest reserves and national parks. Chimpanzees are social animals, living in communities from 10 to 100 individuals. These communities, known as troops, are hierarchical, led by a dominant male. Troops are comprised of many loose, temporary subgroups of mixed males and females of all ages. Chimpanzees use a system of vocalizations to communicate with one other. They are the smartest animals on the planet, second only to humans. Half of the chimpanzees day is spent foraging for food. Their diet consists of primarily fruits, but they also eat leaves, buds, blossoms, seeds, stems, bark and resin. Chimpanzees are also known to eat insects, birds and bird eggs and on occasion, they hunt mammals, such as colobus monkeys. The average lifespan of wild chimpanzees is 40 to 45 years. OTHER WILDLIFE Although most commonly associated with the mountain gorilla, it is also worth noting that the bio-diversity and wildlife of Uganda is some of the best that can be experienced anywhere in the world. With its well protected national parks, huge lakes and rivers, deep gorges, mountain ranges and volcanoes, Uganda offers spectacular wildlife and safari game viewing in a truly breath-taking environment. Uganda is known for its primates and for good reason. Besides the mountain gorilla, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has more than 10 species of primates. Kibale National Park has 12 species of primates, the greatest number of any East African park. There are over 1,000 bird species in Uganda, making it a magnet for bird watchers. Uganda s wealth of bird species comprises almost 70% of Africa s bird species and 11% of the world s bird species. That fact is amazing given the small size of the country. The Big Five of Africa - the lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino can be found here. Some of the other animals that make their home here are: cheetah, hyena, zebra, giraffe, hippopotamus, antelope, dik-dik, impala, jackal, warthog, hartebeest, crocodile and more.

O UR TR IPS 3 DAY BWINDI GORILLA TREK Enter the thick brush of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda to track gorillas in their natural environment. The tour begins and ends in Kampala. 4 DAY GORILLA/GOLDEN MONKEYS TOUR Spice up your wildlife sightings with one of the most endangered primates in Africa, the Golden Monkey. After our gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park, we return to track the Golden Monkeys, a rare highland monkey with a golden orange patch of hair on its back. The tour begins and ends in Kigali. 3 DAY VOLCANOES GORILLA TREK Love stunning volcanic landscapes? This gorilla trek takes you through beautiful terraced hillsides of Rwanda s Volcanoes National Park. The tour begins and ends in Kigali.

O U R T R IPS (CONT.) 5 DAY UGANDA/RWANDA GORILLA TREKKING There is no need to choose between Uganda and Rwanda with this double dose of gorilla trekking. On this itinerary, we take you on mountain gorilla sightings at Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Volcanoes National Park. The tour begins and ends in either Kampala or Kigali. 5 DAY BWINDI/KIBALE GORILLA AND CHIMPS TOUR Track humanity s closest living relative, the chimpanzee. On this visit to Kibale Forest, we observe Uganda s largest population of chimpanzees and more. From there, we continue to the mountain gorillas of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Journey through Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Uganda s most popular game reserve, Queen Elizabeth National Park. The tour begins and ends in Kampala.

OUR TRIPS (CONT.) 6-9 DAY UGANDA SAFARI Our safaris bring us to Uganda s best parks and game reserves for an authentic wildlife safari. These trips, ranging from 6 to 9 days, can include gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, traditional game viewing and exciting boat cruises. Observe lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, hyenas, hippos, chimps, colobus monkeys, baboons and more. The possibilities are endless. These tours begin and end in Kampala.

NATIONAL PARKS OF UGANDA BWINDI IMPENETRABLE NATIONAL PARK A jewel of Uganda, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located on the western rift valley s edge. The forest, accessible only by foot, comprises approximately 130 square miles of jungle with both montane and lowland forests. The park is home to more than half of the remaining mountain gorillas in Uganda. QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK Queen Elizabeth National Park, together with Kyambura and Kigezi Wildlife Reserve, forms the most diverse ecosystem in Africa. It boasts two large lakes, George and Edward, and the Kazinga Channel between them, whose shoreline is populated by thousands of animals. Open savannah dotted with acacia and euphobia trees provide a habitat for elephants, lions, leopards, kobs, and buffalo. KIBALE FOREST NATIONAL PARK Kibale Forest National Park is one of the most beautiful national parks in Uganda with a tropical rainforest and a diversity of animals. Kibale harbors the largest number of chimpanzees, with over 1,450 protected within its borders. The park offers visitor a chance to see chimpanzees, red colobus monkeys, and I hoesti monkeys in their natural environment.

N AT ION AL PARKS OF U GANDA (CO NT. ) MURCHISON FALLS NATIONAL PARK The largest protected space in Uganda is Murchison Falls National Park. It derived its name from Murchison Falls, part of the Nile River waterway. At the base of the falls, the river gentles to become a giant riverside preserve where hippos, crocodiles, waterbucks, and buffalo commingle. Other wildlife includes lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, buffalo, chimpanzees and birds. VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK Volcanoes National Park was formed from a desire back in 1925 to give the mountain gorillas a safe harbor. At first this preserve was just a small land area which then grew to encompass three parks. Together, they protect half of all the mountain gorillas that are left, and are also an excellent place to see golden monkeys. RES PO NS IBL E TO URIS M We tread lightly on the environment.
