What: 9 th Grade Outdoor Education Week SAGE RIDGE SCHOOL Ask Our Graduates Why: Outdoor Education Week is one of the main highlights of the Sage Ridge Experience. During a one-week period in September, students in grades 5 th 12 th all depart for one week to different locations around the west to experience life outside the classroom. All students are expected to attend and will have an unforgettable experience. When: Monday, September 10 th Friday, September 14 th, 2018 Program: Move Mountains. Location: Angel Island, San Francisco Bay. Website: http://www.gomovemountains.org Program Phone: (775) 831-2646 Description from their Website: Based out of Incline Village, Nevada, Move Mountains was founded in 2013 with a vision to raise the bar for team-building and leadership development programs. We aim to produce and provide exemplary and industry-changing facilitators who maximize the potential of any experience by blending unique adventure programs with the latest understanding of neuroscience, personal and relational psychology, and mindfulness. Our objective is to always balance fun, movement and reflection through highly customized programs challenging students and adults in the prime learning zone just beyond their comfort level. Educational Overview: The 9 th graders are setting out for a camping and sailing trip to Angel Island located in the beautiful San Francisco Bay. Students will be camping and exploring Angel Island for two days and then they board the Schooner Seaward and learn to sail the tall ship around the Bay. The experienced staff of Move Mountains will work in partnership with the highly qualified Sage Ridge faculty to provide the most rewarding experience possible for the students. Throughout the trip we help students develop skills in leadership, climbing, backcountry travel, scientific inquiry, nature observations, trail etiquette, and teamwork. Additionally, the program aims to foster self-reliance, selfconfidence, self-reflection, interpersonal relationships, and natural connections between the classroom experience and the outdoor environment. Important: Students must arrive at school no later than 8:00 a.m. on Monday, September 10 th, 2018. Please provide your child with a sack lunch for this first day. June 7, 2018 Dear 9 th Grade Families, Who: Sage Ridge School 2018/19 9 th Grade Class What: 9 th Grade Outdoor Education Where: Angel Island Camping and Sailing When: Depart Monday, September 10, 2018 at 8:00 A.M from SRS Return Friday, September 14, 2018 at 3:00-3:30 P.M. to SRS On September 10 th, Sage Ridge School 9 th grade students will depart campus for their 2017 Outdoor Education trip to Angel Island State Park and Call of the Sea sailing adventure. Angel Island State Park is located in the beautiful San Francisco Bay. The location provides ample day-hiking, access to sailing and internationally recognized historical sites such as the Angel Island Immigration Station We will take the Angel Island Ferry departing from Tiburon to reach the island. Once we arrive on the island, students will hike a short distance and learn the art of setting up camp. It won t take long to fully assimilate to life in the outdoors. Throughout the trip, students will hike, cook, read, do teambuilding and communication activities, write in journals, and work together to face challenges and develop the qualities of leadership fostered at Sage Ridge School. Expert staff will work in partnership with the highly qualified Sage Ridge faculty to provide the most rewarding experience possible for the students. Throughout the trip we help students develop skills in leadership, outdoor-living, scientific inquiry, nature observations, trail etiquette and teamwork. 4 Equipment List Move Mountains will provide group equipment such as tents, stoves/fuel, pots, food, navigation tools, first aid, trowels, etc. Each student is responsible for his/her own personal equipment and snack / lunch for the first day. CHECK OFF items as you pack (or set aside to wear), so you remember it al! You ll be notified if there is to be a pre-departure gear at school prior to the trip. You may bring a third pair of pants (jeans) for the travel days. Pair lightweight waterproof/ wind pants 1 (outer layer) 4 Underwear preferably non-cotton Extremities 1 Wool or fleece hat 1 Baseball or sunhat Separate from any hood attached to a jacket 1 Bandana 1 Pair of gloves fleece or knit gloves (can be cold on the water) 4 Pairs of hiking socks Synthetic materials or wool 1 Pairs of liner socks recommended to reduce friction and prevent blisters 1 Pair of sandals 1 Pair of hiking boots/ shoes Tevas, Chacos or similar sandals with heel straps to secure sandal to foot. No flip-flops During sailing and hiking participants must wear heavy-duty foot protection like hiking shoes or boots. Loafers and light weight shoes will not suffice.

5 EQUIPMENT QTY Item Description 1 Backpacking backpack (or duffle to transport gear if renting a backpack) internal or external frame (limited number available for rent from DGA) 1 Daypack (using your backpack is acceptable) large enough to fit cold weather gear, 2 1- liter water bottles and food (you can always use your regular backpack if you empty all other items) 1 Sleeping bag compact, preferably synthetic, 30 degree rating 1 Sleeping pad (several available for rent) 1 quick dry pack towel 1 Meal set 2 1 liter water bottles 1 Headlamp or flashlight (extra batteries) Sunscreen and lip balm Sunglasses Toiletries Glasses/contacts (if needed) Bug repellent mug, bowl, spoon, fork (Tupperware and plastic spoons are great) camelback water carriers (not the actual backpack) are optional, but total water storage capacity should equal (2) liters toothbrush and toothpaste, travel size washing supplies, deodorant, no lotions. allergy and other meds should be given to Medications the teacher at the beginning of the trip OPTIONAL ITEMS Qty Item Description Camera cannot be a reason to bring phone or other multipurpose technology Hand sanitizer Hand warmers Watch Reading material DO NOT BRING Electronic Devices Alcohol, illegal drugs, tobacco products including vaping or JUUL equipment Knives, gum, junk food, caffeinated drinks *If parents need to contact the group, they can reach us by contacting the school office.
