After you have paid for your accommodation and tuition fees you will need enough money for lunch and transport each day. You can buy a typical Australian sandwich for $8-10, and an evening meal for $17 - $30. You will also need spending money for entertainment. In total, you should plan to have access to at least A$250 per week. What s the weather like in Sydney? Sydney weather is very changeable. In the summer it can be very hot (January is often more than 30 C), so you will need to bring light, casual clothes. It can also rain and be cool in Summer, so it is important to bring a rain jacket and warm clothes as well. You should bring beachwear, as Sydney is famous for its beautiful beaches! During the winter months (June, July, August) it can be quite cool so it is important to bring a coat and warm clothes. But, keep in mind that it can also be sunny in winter! YOUR FIRST DAY AT SELC How do I get to SELC? SELC is at 19-23 Hollywood Avenue, Bondi Junction in a new, modern building. It is on the corner of Ebley Street and Hollywood Avenue. We are on Level 2. If you arrive at Bondi Junction train and bus station, walk up Bronte Road and turn left in to Ebley Street. Walk all the way to the end and left in to Hollywood Avenue. Train & Bus Station SELC Timetable for first day of term 8:00 Arrive at SELC and go to the student room on level 2 for a free coffee. You should bring your passport, a pen or pencil for the test, and money for your lunch. N.B You should pay any fees that you have not yet paid at this time. You can pay at Student Reception. 8.30 Welcome speech the course options will be explained. 8.50 SELC Placement Test This is to see what your English level is and helps to determine which class you will join. The test will take approximately 1.25 hours. During your test you will have an oral interview with one of the teachers. 11.00 Orientation meeting where you will receive an information booklet about SELC and learn more about living in Australia. Second day of term - daytime 8:20 You will find your name, class and room number on a list in the Student Room 8.30 Class begins. You will meet your teacher and other students in your classroom. Second day of term - evening 16.40 You will find your name, class and room number on a list in the Student Room 17.00 Class begins. You will meet your teacher and other students in your classroom. Term Start Dates SELC has term start dates every 4 weeks. On these dates, new students are tested and given an orientation. Classes will begin on the second day of the new term. There are no General English classes on term start dates. Only Cambridge preparation run classes on term start dates. We offer a grammar workshop and a conversation class on that day for continuing students. Homestay and SELC Bondi Lodge Information If you have booked SELC accommodation, please read this section carefully. We have arranged accommodation for you in an Australian household, or in our student residence SELC Bondi Lodge. Here is some information we think will be helpful to you whilst staying in your accommodation: Your homestay or the caretaker of SBL lodge will explain the guidelines to you whilst living in your accommodation. If you are unsure of anything, please just ask. Please be aware that you are not living in your own home or that you will be living with many other people at SBL, so always be respectful of the other people you live with. Always say please and thank you when asking for or receiving anything. Homestay Half Board: You will receive breakfast and dinner each day. You will have to make your own arrangements for lunch during the week and on weekends. The homestay will tell you the usual meal-time for the family this is a great time for you to practice your English whilst eating dinner with the family. If you know that you will be late or will not be home for meals, you should tell your host in advance. Room and Facilities: You will do your own cooking and your host will provide you with reasonable storage space for the food you buy. You should make sure that you clean up the cooking area and any dishes you use. You should arrange with your host family a suitable time for you to prepare your meals. Your room: You will be treated as part of the family in your homestay. Therefore, you will need to keep your own room clean and tidy, as you would do in your own home, and usually offer to help your host to clean up after meals and in other small ways. Bathroom: Try to limit your time in the bathroom to 15 minutes showers should only be 10 minutes maximum, as water in Australia is expensive and in short supply. Please make sure the bathroom is left clean after you have used it. Telephone and WIFI: Telephone and WIFI is not included in the homestay price if you would like to use either please ask permission and how much it will cost first. WIFI will cost between $5 -$10 per week. Please pay for this in advance. Laundry: The homestay is providing the machine and powder for you to do your washing. Please ask them to instruct you on how to use their machine. Smoking: Smoking is not allowed in any homestay. If you are a smoker, then you need smoke outside away from the home. Extending your stay: Your accommodation has been arranged for the time you requested on your enrolment form. If you would like to stay with your homestay for a longer period, you should ask one of the accommodation staff in the first 7 days of your stay. It may or may not be possible for us to arrange this as we cannot always guarantee an extension. Please let us know if you are looking for accommodation as we may have a room at SELC Bondi Lodge. SELC Bondi Lodge Room and Facilities: You will do your own cooking there is a fridge provided in your room to store cold items. There are two small kitchen areas which close at 9pm. Please make sure that you clean up the cooking area and wash, dry and put away any dishes, pots and pans that you use. Free tea/coffee, milk and sugar is provided. Your room: Will be cleaned/sheets changed once a week the communal areas will be cleaned daily. Bathroom: Try to limit your time in the bathroom to 10 minutes showers should only be 5 minutes maximum, as water in Australia is expensive and in short supply. Please make sure the bathroom is clean after you have used it. WIFI: This is included in the price but is only for using social media and emailing not for down-loading. Laundry: There is a machine at the lodge it is $4 a load and you provide your own powder. Smoking: Smoking is not allowed inside the Lodge. If you are a smoker, then you need smoke outside on the front or back terrace and put your cigarette butts in the ashtrays provided. Extending your stay: Your accommodation has been arranged for the time you requested on your enrolment form. If you would like to stay at SBL for a longer period, you should ask one of the accommodation coordinators in the first 7 days of your stay. It may or may not be possible for us to arrange this as we cannot always guarantee an extension. QUESTIONS If you have any matters about your homestay which you would like to discuss, please arrange to see the Accommodation staff at SELC during class breaks. AIRPORT TRANSFERS If you have requested an airport transfer, please take note of the following information. On your arrival day our representative will be waiting for you near McDonald s 1 hour after the flight lands. The airport arrival exits are often very crowded. If you do not see our SELC representative, please do not move to another place. Stay near McDonald s and keep looking for the representative who holds your name. If you still can t find the SELC representative, please phone them on 1300 969 304. If SELC is not advised in advance you may need to pay extra. OVERSEAS STUDENT HEALTH COVER (OSHC) If you are on a student visa you must pay the government OSHC charge. Even if you have health insurance in your home country or health insurance for travellers, you must still pay OSHC. The health cover is operated by Medibank Private.
