Oxley College s Link with the village school in Korovu Mittagong resident but Fiji born, Mrs Akisi Philipson sent one of her daughters, Luisa (2002 Old Oxleyan), and her son, John (2004 Old Oxleyan), to Oxley College. John, who became Head Boy in 2004, was a very good cricketer and played 1 st XI for 5 years at a time when the College won ISA Division 1 (with John selected for ISA and NSW Schools). Mrs Philipson enjoyed assisting in the cricket hospitality over these years and obviously learned how Oxley College started with Years 7 and 8, and adding a new year group each year thereafter. She thought about the village where she had grown up (Korovu) and where her father was the chief: and the fact that there were no schools in the village. So, following the example of Oxley College, Akisi decided to start with one Kindergarten class and build up from there. She paid for the construction of a classroom herself and the salary of the teacher. It has been a long struggle for Mrs Philipson but she has been assisted by friends in the Southern Highlands, by fund-raising by some of the Houses, and by individual Oxley families: and has at last received recognition by the Education Department in Fiji. The OSSO in Fiji continues to support Mrs Philipson in her endeavours to improve the education available in the village of her youth. It is a most worthwhile cause.

It is ninety-one kilometres from Nadi and nine kilometres from the gold mining settlement of Vatukoula. There are plenty of old houses and an air of faded glory the town's fortunes have risen and fallen with the Emperor Gold Mining Company which mined here from the 1930s until 2006 when the mine was closed. Until then, most of the mine s 1800 workers lived in Vatukoula, a purpose-built town. Tavua was formally incorporated as a town in 1992 with the appointment of its first mayor.
Gold Town Hotel, Tavua, is a clean, quiet and spacious hotel located on a hill top overlooking Tavua town and the sea. Rooms are large with air-conditioning, a TV and a fridge. Bathrooms and toilets are in good condition. The staff are very friendly and helpful.
Robinson Crusoe Island Resort Likuri Island, Coral Coast, Fiji A few miles north of Natadola Beach on Fiji's Coral Coast and only 40 minutes drive from Nadi, this 10 hectare island paradise lies only 10 minutes across the bay from Viti Levu in calm clear waters. Access is boat only and includes a 30 minute river cruise followed by a short trip across the lagoon. Likuri is a beautiful island that one can walk around in just 20 minutes at low tide. The accommodation and food are basic but all one needs. Oxley students stay in dormitory or bure-type accommodation. There are water sports (inviting clear warm water), hammocks, day excursions and a fantastic cultural show most nights etc. Best of all are the happy, friendly, welcoming staff, most of whom come from local villages. Dormitory Accommodation This dormitory room is situated upstairs and has 13 single beds with mosquito nets. Shared bathroom facilities are conveniently located next door. Room Facilities: view, fan, shared bathroom, shared toilet Food Meals at the resort are served buffet style by the beach with a variety of dishes to choose from. Ingredients are locally sourced and are mostly organic. The resort caters for vegetarians, and most food allergies can be accommodated if adequate notice is provided. The resort prepares many of its meals lovo style, whereby meat, fish and root-crop vegetables are wrapped in banana and coconut leaves and buried under hot rocks for several hours. This gives the food a distinctly smoky taste that is unique to the pacific. Unlimited self-service tea & coffee making facilities are also available during the day and evening.
