William Henry Harrison District KLONDIKE DERBY Leader s Guide January 22-24, 2016 Camp Friedlander 581 Ibold Rd, Loveland, OH 45140
What is a Klondike Derby? Many years ago, men raced across the Alaskan wilderness by means of dogs and sleds. Scouting has taken this idea and created the Klondike Derby. Each patrol builds a sled, collects materials and equipment and prepares to embark on the Klondike adventure and participate as a team in the derby. William Henry Harrison has a long tradition of annual Klondikes, which ended about 10 years ago - we are bringing it back! This campout is for Boy Scouts and Venture Scouts. Webelos may attend if registered as part of a Troop. Sorry, no younger Cub Scouts at this event. General Information Registration Fee Additional Patches $10 per person (both youth and adult) May be purchased for $3 each while supplies are available Adult Leadership Per BSA Youth Protection guidelines, each unit must have a minimum of two registered adult leaders in attendance; a responsible (age 21 or older) must be in camp at all times. You are responsible for your Scouts. Staffing Need at least 2 leaders or parents per troop/crew to help run stations on Saturday. Please let us know the names that can assist at check-in on Friday. Camping Units will camp in designated campsites based on the number of registered youth and adults (please register in advance). Each unit furnishes its own tents, food, equipment, etc. Campsites will be assigned at check-in. Health and Safety Please be prepared for cold weather and the potential for snow. In case of cold-related injuries such as frostbite, the Dining Hall will be open with heat and additional first aid resources. First Aid All units are responsible for the health and safety of their scouts. Hence, all units must have their own first aid equipment and have them easily accessible for use. However, we will also have a First Aid Station at the Trailblazer building. Emergencies and serious first aid incidents must immediately be reported to the Klondike First Aid officer. BSA Medical Forms All Scouts and adult leaders are required to have health forms on site. Unit must have them available at all times. Vehicles All vehicles must be parked in the main parking lot. We allow each group to drop off trailers or large equipment using ONE vehicle at a time. The Camp Master will open the gate as soon as convenient; your vehicle is to be returned to the parking lot after unloading. Personal gear can be brought into camp by using the available pull-carts, which should be returned to the maintenance area quickly so that other groups may make use of them. Thanks for not keeping the carts in your campsite overnight. Fires Thanks for building your fires in designated campfire rings and nowhere else. Please use available firewood and gather any tinder/limbs around your campsite. We appreciate your help in preventing the spread of harmful pest insects by NOT bringing your own firewood onto Camp Property. Chainsaw use is not allowed without Ranger Staff approval. Food Each unit is responsible for making sure it provides enough food for all of its participants for the entire event. There is a camp-wide pot-luck dessert table at about 9:00 on Saturday, following the sled race. Patrol cooking is encouraged for all Troops, Crews, etc. for this event. Plan to cook on camp stoves or on charcoal at grilling pits. Water All of the Murdoc water spigots stay in use year-round. They ll be your source of clean, cold, potable water. There is a Murdoc in each campsite, and there are many scattered around the camp near some program areas and buildings.
Camping Camp tents will NOT be in place; units must provide their own tents. The platforms used as flooring for the camp tents will be in the campsites; they may be moved to make room for tents or shelters. Volunteers Each unit is asked to provide two volunteers for the day on Saturday. Volunteers will be briefed after cracker barrel Friday night, and provided instructions for their tasks.
