AMBIENCE IMPROVEMENT PROJECT O.R TAMBO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT CONCEPT DESIGN DATE: 01 MARCH 2017

Good ambience can make the whole experience seem better Page 3
The challenge posed by a project of this nature is, on the one hand to improve the ambience and tell a story, and there is the perception of the passenger on the other hand, and the question whether this has actually been experienced by him. The image you see is depicting the pattern of the floor in the CTB atrium and is a case in point. It was derived from a pattern on a traditional XHOSA skirt and creates a striking visual image, yet the story behind has not been communicated effectively and is therefore not appreciated or experienced. Page 4
ambience -Ambience is not really something you see but rather something that is felt and experienced. experience vibe -Good ambience arises from all aspects of the airport working in harmony: - service (staff attitude, quality) - facilitation ( process and requirements) - interior (design, lighting, colour, etc). - architecture (design and condition) -Good ambience of an airport defines great passenger experience wonder -criteria for a great experience: - good lines of sight - natural passenger flows. - element of surprise, uniqueness and sense of wonder. Conceptual Ideas Conceptual Ideas The Challenge OR Tambo International Airport needs to welcome and introduce travellers (tourists, businessmen, frequent flyers and everyday South Africans) to Africa, South Africa and Johannesburg Our Approach Every travellers experience is made up of a series of moments. It is these moments that collectively define ones memory of a place. Our Solution OR Tambo International Airport needs to showcase, curate and activate some of these moments MOMENTS Within Africa, South Africa and Johannesburg, we have curated activations around the pillars of People, Place, Culture, Business and Politics People The people of South Africa Place South Africa as a country and the places that are of importance Culture - The distinct characteristics and origins of all South Africans Business The South African economy and it s contribution to the world Politics The important historical achievements in South Africa Page 9

HUMAN EVOLUTION at the International Arrivals Pier People, Place Arrivals Mezzanine - International Arrivals Pier Touch point area current Activation Reference is made to the origins and evolution of mankind in Africa. It is particularly relevant now with the recent discovery of homo naledi at the Cradle of Mankind. We propose that the installation is housed at the end of the pier, where the direction changes to link to terminal A. Warped mirrors will be placed in such a way that the form/reflected image of a passer-by is manipulated so as to emulate human evolution. proposed Page 11

Arrivals Mezzanine - International Arrivals Corridor Lobby Touch point area CITY OF GOLD Business, Place Activation current Gold was first discovered in Johannesburg and spurred the birth of the South African economy. The walls will be a graphic display of conditions in a pre-1970 s mine, including relics, mining tools, etc. Gold tiles would be inserted within the existing floor finish, depicting pivotal moments, people and organisations in Johannesburg s history of gold mining and commerce. This in a way would be the culmination of the Explore SA journey that passengers had been taken on along the International Arrivals Corridor. Page 13

ICONS WELCOME at the at the International Arrivals Hall People, Politics Arrivals Level Arrivals Hall Touch point area current Activation It is proposed that this area could house the installation of sculptures, to provide a welcome to visitors, by five iconic South African figures: Nelson Mandela, FW De Klerk, OR Tambo, Albert Luthuli and Desmond Tutu. They could stand 3m tall, with a typographic backdrop of their stories. It is recommended that this should be handled as an artist s commission, with the figures being symbolic (abstract) rather than too literal. proposed Page 18
Arrivals Level Passport Control Touch point area 1994 ELECTIONS at the Passport Control Queuing Politics Activation The proposal is to graphically represent this moment by covering the walls in front of Passport Control with 19 million voters marks. curren t The connection to millions of voters queuing on this historic day might not be lost on passengers waiting in this area. Arrivals Level International Baggage Collection Touch point area PILLARS OF THE FREEDOM CHARTER at the International Baggage Collection Politics Activation It is proposed to display the core principles of the Freedom Charter on the columns in this area, to represent this important moment in South African History and symbolise the pillars in which our country was built. Metal panels with the wording of the Charter will be fixed to the columns. current Page 20 proposed
Arrivals Level CTB Atrium Touch point area WELCOME TO THE GATEWAY TO AFRICA at the CTB Atrium People, Business Activation The area will position Johannesburg as the gateway to Africa in the minds of passengers and visitors. This will be achieved through a hanging installation representing a huge globe, where Africa and South Africa will be highlighted, using different materials/ textures and colours The installation will also include welcoming messages in different languages and will spin slowly to allow a full view for people while waiting. We envisage that a South African artist would be commissioned to create this installation, also incorporating lighting ( the globe could be glowing from within ), making it the focal point in the terminal building, being visually exciting, contextual and also educational. current proposed Page 21
